several
decades. In

1950's,
arguments over the Korean Peninsula led to the Korean War, which
lasted for three grueling years. Since then, North Korea has been
greatly scrutinized for its communist government system, hostile
attitude toward the United States and production of nuclear weapons.
However, North Korea's actions are often misunderstood due to media
propaganda and few foreign allies. The following information argues
actions, common opinions, and misconceptions about North Korea.
North Korea and Foreign Relations
Since the end of the Korean War, North Korea has been accused of be
unwilling to improve foreign relations, primarily with South Korea
and the United States. However, North Korea has been making postive
strides toward improving these relationships over the past decade.
Government officials have publicly approved of the presence of the
United States military, who have been guarding the borders of the
Korean Peninsula for many years. From June 1315, 2000, officials
from North and South Korea deliberated over peace agreements, and
eventually signed the June 15th NorthSouth Joint Declaration. When
reflecting on the peace agreement, Dr. Woo from Kyunghee University
described the benefits of the declaration by stating, "1) emphasizing
the principle of the Korean nation first, 2) abolishing legal and
institutional apparatus within South Korea, and 3) strengthening
NorthSouth economic cooperation" (Song, 2007).
North Korea has the right to produce nuclear weapons.
According the Globalissu.org (2002) North Korea announced it was
restarting its nuclear program, breaking a 1994 agreement to forego
nuclear ambitions in exchange for the construction of two safer light
water nuclear power reactors and the shipment of oil from the United
States. With a security guarantee and no outside interference of their
communist system, this promise was made by the United States.

Unfortunately, the United States has followed through with their side
of the agreement. The U.S. has also used aggressive policies against
North Korea. They put a strict sanction against the Korean regime,
even though it is the civilians who are suffering at most. The United
States started threatening and arguing to use force, risking an arms
race and a regional instability. In President Bushs 2003 State of the
Union Address, he declared North Korea to be a part of an axis of evil
along with Iraq and Iran. After being categorized with Iraq and Iran
and witnessing the conflict in Iraq, North Korea has continued
production of nuclear weapons for selfdefense purposes.
Human Rights
Because North Korea is a communist society, this country has been
severely accused by the United Nations when it comes to human rights
issues. This country has been accused of having detention camps, gas
chambers and torturous behaviors towards women and prisoners.
Although North Korea does not confirm, nor deny these accusations, it
would be difficult for a credible source from the United Nations to
bear witness to these acts, due to the fact that very few foreigners
are allowed to enter the country. The suspicion that North Korea does
not respect the human rights of its citizens could easily be an
example of how media propaganda can negatively effect foreign
relations.
