Research Proposal

From:

Date:

Subject: Research Proposal
Proposed Research Topic:
The purpose of TV idents are to acknowledge the viewers and make it clear
what channel they are watching. Its also an opportunity for the channel to
promote themselves in a unique light which relates to their ethos and
audience and make them stand out from other TV channels/competitors. It is
sometimes used to illustrate what TV programs are coming up as well
Purposes:
One of the key purposes of an ident is to create an appropriate TV ident for
that specific channel. All TV channels are different, e.g. CBBC is aimed for
children and Dave is aimed for men aged from teens to young adults.
Therefore the idents for the Dave and for CBBC are going to be different so
they occur to each audience. In CBBCs idents, they display a cartoon
animation with childish aspects to it and colours which connote childhood
and intrigues children. However, Dave displays idents with real-life pictures
and sometimes consists of slightly rude puns and innuendos that would
entertain audiences of a slightly older age. With our ident, were creating a
ident for MTV. MTV has a target audience of teenagers who are in to music
and typical youth entertainment. MTV make their idents wacky and modern
which have a predominant purpose to occur to teenagers and intrigue them.
This is done by colourful, eye-catching idents.
Background
I am making a TV ident for MTV. MTVs idents are already eye catching,
colourful and wacky. These sort of idents are purposely designed by MTV to
attract their target audience, which is teenagers. The things that I will
remain the same in my MTV idents in comparison to previous idents
(repackaged/rebranded?) Context= information you know about the channel
is the vibrant collection of colours. Also, as MTV is a music channel, some of
their idents are closely related to themes of party and dance, which I am
going to include within my ident.
Scope:
We will make two surveys targeted at two different focus groups. The
surveys will be widespread over the answers we want. Questions will vary
from being related to TV viewing, TV idents and MTV idents as a whole. This
ident is qualitative rather than quanititive. I believe quality is more
important that quantity. Also, media students of Ravens Wood consist of
mostly people that watch MTV and are MTVs target audience. Our main
objective is to make an ident that relates to MTVs target audience so its
the target audience who we need to interview.
Method:

The way we will collect data is by making a survey targeted towards a focus
group. The
survey will consist of questions based on TV viewing, TV idents and more
precisely,
MTV idents. The focus group will be a group of media students from Ravens
Wood,
with equal numbers of males and females so the answers arent bias and
more
concentrated on one particular sex.
Timetable:
Prepare proposal by: November 17th
Complete literature review: November 28th
Complete fieldwork by: November 28th
Complete analysis by: November 28th
Give presentation on: December 1st
Complete final report by: December 10th
Limitations:
There are certain limitations, beyond Piers and Is control which restricts us
what we can do with the ident and the conclusions we can draw from it.
These main restrictions are the fact that we do not work for MTV and do not
have the same professional level of crew, technology, resources that MTV
possess. Another limitation is that within our class, there are many more
boys than girls. This makes it less reliable and unequal. One of our aims is
for the ident to attract all of our target audience. More boys than girls
means there will be a lack of female input, making the ident less likely to
interest women/girls. We will try and resolve this by researching further. We
will carry out both qualitative and quantitive research (such as interviews
and focus groups). To exclude the issue with women being outnumbered, we
will create research procedures that include even amounts of boys and girls,
so its not bias and unfair.
