MARKETING POULTRY BIRDS

(BROILERS)
Before we dive into the topic of discussion, you need to know some real facts
about marketing.
1. Marketing: the exchange of goods for an agreed sum of money or the
commercial processes involved in promoting and selling and distributing a
product or service.
2. Poultry birds: these are domesticated birds thought to be descended from
the red jungle fowl or flesh of chickens, turkeys, ducks and/or geese raised
for meat.
With this report, Im sure at the end of the day you will be able to brood and
market your broilers successfully without any obstacles; but there might be
some challenges due to the market competition.

BROODING
Most find it strenuous brooding broilers up to marketable point. With the
experience I have, I can boldly say, IT IS QUITE EASY regardless the number of
flock you have. Some poultry farmers usually blame their failure to produce
healthy marketable broilers on the suppliers of the flock when its their own
fault. The suppliers of day-old broiler chicks have very little to do in respect to
the health of the chicks i.e. little is expected from them, though you should be
sure their facilities are standard and their bird are hatched under good
conditions. At the hatchery, before the birds are supplied, they are given a
vaccine called the I.O Vaccine. This is done at the hatchery. Some farmers also
give the birds the vaccine again just to be double sure they are vaccinated.

Now, you have been supplied the birds. The way you brood you bird matter
a lot if you desire EXCELLENT RESULTS. When I say EXCELLENT RESULTS, I
mean Marketable Broilers Of Nothing Less Than 2.4kg Each In 42days. Lets
take for example a flock of 200 broilers. By standard convention, it will cost
you about N80, 000 N90, 000 to feed the flock plus the cost of purchasing
the birds. Now lets do a little math;
If each bird weigh 2.4kg
Each kg then is sold at say N600
2.4kg x N600 = N1440 per bird
The amount you get per bird now multiplied by the total number of birds
N1440 x 200 = N288, 000
Now, to estimate how much profit you have made, just subtract the amount
spent on the birds plus cost of purchase
N288, 000 N90, 000 = N198, 000 in 42 - 50days
Isnt it profitable? You can even brood double the next turn!
Now, lets talk about how to achieve this goal.
You need to take note of what we are going to discuss because they are very
important if you really want good results.
1. Health: The health of broilers is very important for their growth. The main
reason some broilers have stunted growth and slow development is
because they are infected with either of the following sicknesses
a. Sneezing: A symptom consisting of the involuntary expulsion of air. This
sickness prevents broilers of developing rapidly and also stunts their
growth.
b. Coccidiosis: infestation with coccidia (Parasites in the digestive
epithelium of vertebrates and higher invertebrates). This cause browncolored litter or droppings of the birds turn brown or red. These are the
symptoms of the sickness. It also stunts their growth and slow
development in broilers.
2. Feeding: Managing feed for broilers is not advisable, so one need to feed
them but it should be noted that over feeding or unnecessary feeding is not
advised. There are schedules for feeding each bird at different stage of

development. For best result, feed them only when necessary and avoid
wasting feed. Though they eat a lot, one should be careful not to starve
them because it may lead to under development.
3. Space: Broilers need a lot of space for development. I might say that they
are allergic to heat and tight space. Broilers need a lot of air for rapid
growth and development. So, make sure you have a spacious place for
them. Also note that, as the day goes, increase the space provided for them
until you observe they are comfortable with the space or they are not tight.
4. Medication: Some farmers give their bird more than required drugs hence
increasing expenses on the birds. I must tell you that, broilers need not be
given too much drugs. In fact, they require very little drug compared to
Layers. Here are what you need for medication;
a. Glucose + Alfasirin: this is usually administered for the first 5days life.
b. Gomboro Vaccine: administered when the birds are 7days & 21days old.
c. Lasota Vaccine: administered when birds are 14days & 28days old.
d. Flagin + Septrin: this is administered for the prevention of Coccidiosis
and Sneezing respectively. Please note that the Flagin and Septrin Im
talking about here are the normal drugs administered to humans. The
dose recommended for broilers is 1tablet to 1litre of water. This
medication is repeated from time to time, usually weekly or every
2weeks.
e. Feed: you may be surprised to see this point here. Dont be because,
80% of likely sickness in poultry birds are taken care of by the quality of
feed you feed them with. So please make sure the type of feed you feed
your broilers is of the best standard. I would recommend TOP FEEDS for
best results.
f. Water: broilers require a lot of water for digestion. Though the amount
of water they consume depends on the weather and the level of
feeding.
Broilers do not require extra drugs because they are very fragile and dont need
too much stress, once you have completed all the necessary vaccines, what is
required is repetition of the Flagin & Septrin dose till they are marketable.

MARKETING
This is the most challenging part of being a successful farmer in Nigeria;
GETTING BUYERS OR CUSTOMERS TO SELL YOUR PRODUCT TO
With the experience I have in this line of business, I will show you some simple
but strategic methods you can begin to implement for effective marketing of your
broilers which will guarantee maximum profit on the broilers.

1. Fast food Joints & Hotels:

This method is quite strategic but if well implemented, I guarantee
you maximum profit. Look around you today, irrespective of which state
you are. There are a lot of Fast Food joints in the country who need
suppliers of the various stocks they consume. When I say consume, I dont
mean EAT but rather, MAKE USE OF. Simply walk into any Joint of your
choice, it is advised that you draft a letter addressed to the manager of the
branch offering a proposal to supply then prepared livestock (chicken) at
cheaper price per kilo. This has to be formal and you have to be convincing
in order to make an impact on the manager. Make sure you include you
contact address just in case they are convinced and decide to give your
services a shot. Also try to be brief; this is because, the manager is a busy
person and may not have all the time and attention to give to your
letter/proposal. Remember: Be convincing!
You can also dialogue with the manager in person. This is best if you
want faster and immediate consideration. I prefer this method because it is
more confident and I use it to build a better relationship with the firm. I
recommend you talk to the manager in person, this is better. The proposal
technique is rather tedious and time consuming.

2. Retailers:
All over Nigeria, there are spots in the markets where people
patronize on daily basis to purchase birds for either festivals or just for
domestic use.
Visit one of these spots, dialogue with the retailers about your products.
Try to be convincing so as to win their patronization. This method is the
most effective because, you simply need to win over a couple retailers,
keep a good relationship with them, and before you know it, they will
become permanent customers.

3. Home sale:
Some people may thing this method is weak but it is less tedious and
very effective but it may take some time to clear all you stock especially if
you have a large stock. But it is profitable during festive periods. For you to
make good profit in this business, design a calendar to meet with the major
festivals in the country.

Note that the price of broiler is not stable so, sometimes, cost of purchase may
differ in your locality or depends on the hatchery you order from.
