Proposal/ Artist Statement
Art is one constant factor throughout the world. It can be found in every corner, it
every crevice and among all souls. That factor of art motivates me not only to create but
also to grow as an artist or as a student studying art. Throughout history humans have
been the soul creators of art, the primary administrators of art. To me that factor is far
more intimate than another relationship that may pose as something more inspirational.
Being a human and being inspired by the world and people around has directed
me to this course on the terms of fate. I truly appreciate the changes and adaptability art
provides in more than one way. Its clich but everyone needs an outlet of expression
especially in the world we live today. Its not so much the product as an outlet that
appeals to me. It is the actual production or creating action of being an artist that is the
outlet for me and why I chose this course. To allow myself to discover more, grow as a
person and produce more to relieve myself of whatever is going on inside my head at the
time.
Art has an infinite amount of applications and appealing things of life to me. This
semester as I said I plan on growing and developing more. I want to break away from
what I have been stuck doing for awhile now. I have studied some beautiful and
intriguing figures that have inspired me to create some satisfying pieces. But now I am
satisfied with that and I want more. Throughout my exploration of gestural figure
paintings I have discovered adoration for color and when I say color, I mean the intense
mixes and hues that lie beneath the surfaces and cracks of paintings. Over the summer I
dabbled extensively with dying fabrics and different techniques, with a focus on shibori
style. Learning through this process exposed me to a love for color even more because I
only used one color and in doing so I got to control the intensity of it and the narrative it
may contain. The deep scarlets that bleed into a soft crimson to create a sensual
landmark on fabric of creation. The colors became the subject and the subject became my

thoughts which reflected on a much more personal level for me. It is hard to explain but
its like seeing a feeling.
My plan for this semester is to grow with this thought of color and application. I
want to work with oils just because I appreciate their depth and richness but I might also
work with inks to feed off the influence of the dyeing I did this past summer. I hope to
work on different types of canvas to see where it takes me, maybe even working on raw
unprimed canvas and then also working on primed. Watercolor paper or something
similar has also been something I have thought about using as well if I decide to use ink
as well. I love the idea of big pieces, something that will intimidate people almost. But I
also appreciate the intimacy of small pieces so I hope to complete a series of varying
narratives and sizes.
In the end, I hope this semester will push me in another direction of discovery not
only of myself but also in my artistic integrity and individuality. My goal is to grow and
to appeal to seeing feelings through color. Throughout the semester this experience will
relate to my larger artistic experience by allowing me to create and throughout creation I
hope to tap into a greater appreciation for all I have learned in regards to art history,
technique and life.

Botham, Sally, and Sally Mustang. Sally Mustang. Sally Botham, n.d. Web.
This is the personal website of Sally Mustang. It showcases many of her personal
narratives written by her that correlate to her paintings. Sally Mustang's life is
depicted on her site and allows for the viewer to gain insight into her creations but
also into other aspects of her life that follow her life. The website provides many
images of the artist herself ( she is also a model) and of her work. There are different
pages for different parts of her life and I think this is important to note because it
helps the viewer see a bigger picture of Ms. Mustang like painter, model and yoga
teacher sides.
"Mark Rothko Biography, Art, and Analysis of Works." The Art Story. The Art Story
Foundation, n.d. Web. 27 Nov. 2016.
I discovered this site through the recommendation of an old teacher of mine. When I first
stumbled into the abstract expressionism world my teacher recommended this website
to me because it has a focus in modern art but looks at artists on an individual level.
This site provides the viewer with pages of information specifically on Mark Rothko
but it looks at all aspects of his life, where he started, what influenced him and where
he finished. This site goes into great detail about aspects of Rothko's life and follows
a timeline, which makes the comprehension and understanding of Rothko's art and
life easier to follow for the viewer. The site also provides an analysis and break
downs of his pieces from a non-biased party. Along with that I find that the historical
aspects of the site is extremely helpful because it also looks at the artist and writers
that influenced him as an artist so the viewer gets to see his side of impact as well.
"Wassily Kandinsky Biography, Art, and Analysis of Works." The Art Story. The Art
Story Foundation, n.d. Web. 27 Nov. 2016.
Although this is the same site used previously I find it just as valuable and reliable. By
utilizing this site again it proved just as handy in helping me develop an

understanding for Kandinsky. It includes images, background information, historical

references, key ideas and so much more. This site also provides a look at Kandinsky's
most important works, which is crucial for someone studying his work. This site
provides a look into his life prior to artistry, which is directly reflected in his pieces of
work and reasons for creating.
