WEEKLY OVERVIEW: Week 2


Overview of Week Two: Legal Considerations for Paraprofessionals
Last week we went over what qualities are needed to be a paraprofessional as well as an introduction
of what paraprofessional do in the classroom. We briefly talked about Title I. This week we are going
to go further and review what regulations and laws have morphed into what we know now as Every
Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Laws are used as the foundations within the US educational system.
It starts as high as the 10th and 14th Amendments and goes all the way down to the local, school level.
Course Outcomes:
At the successful completion of this weeks lessons, you should be prepared to:
Explain and examine the role of a paraprofessional in schools
Describe the use of classroom management for a paraprofessional versus a teacher as it
relates to students success

Weekly Guiding Questions


In addition to the course learning outcomes, you should develop a better understanding of the
following concepts:
What laws have shaped the programs under which paraprofessionals are hired?
What are the important concepts of the law that affect your job at the classroom level and
define the basic educational terminology corresponding to those laws (e.g., due process, least
restrictive environment, and confidentiality)?
In what ways does the federal, state, and local government define as guidelines of work for a
paraprofessionals?
What cognitive and metacognitive processes are involved in student learning?
What learner characteristics and events enhance or detract from learning?
What is diversity in the classroom?
What are some of the important differences or exceptionalities that students exhibit?
What learning styles assist in information processing?
What strategies will assist me in my job as a paraprofessional who supports student learning?
