A JUMBO RECOVERY

JUMBO 747-400 CRASH RECOVERY

Client : Hong Kong Civil Aviation Authority

Coordinator : The Hong Kong Salvage & Towage

Company Limited

Location : Kai Tak Intl. Airport, Hong Kong

Water Depth : 0-20 msw

A Boeing 747-400 Jumbo-jet crashed in bad weather whilst trying to land at Hong Kongs international
airport. Miraculously, there were no fatalities nor any serious injuries when the aircraft overshot the
runway and ploughed into the harbour waters. The subsequent salvage operation, unprecedented in
aviation history, became a race against time. This was mainly because the position of the ditched aircraft
was preventing operations on one runway and restricting those on another.

The plane had come to rest in shallow water with the vertical tail fin obstructing the flightpath. This was
removed by The Royal Hong Kong Police using explosives. The fuselage was patched and pumped out
prior to being towed to a specially laid mooring. Seaflex air lift bags were used for the re-floating, tow
and mooring of the aircraft.

After careful preparation, HKSTs 350t floating crane

barge Proteus 1 lifted the aircraft while a smaller
crane alongside supported the nose. With 184 tonnes
of Seaflex lift still attached as a precaution, the entire
spread was moved 2 miles by tugs to the landing site
ashore.

Despatch Note
Seaflex received the order at 1535hrs and by 1930hrs
that evening, 304 tonnes of fully enclosed lift, packed
on air-freight pallets, had left our factory bound for
Heathrow Airport.

Our thanks to Alan Lloynd, Fleet Manager, Hong Kong Salvage & Towage Co. Ltd. for
operational details and photographs.

Project Overview:
Bremerhaven Lock gates

Floating and Turning of a 2300t Lock Gate in Bremerhaven

Operator : Hochtief Construction AG Location : Bremerhaven, Germany

Client : Port of Bremerhaven Water Depth : 0 10 meters

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The port of Bremerhaven, Germany required new
lock gates after a ship collided with the previous set
rendering them inoperable. Hochtief Construction
were awarded the contract to build and install three
new gates, two as replacements and a spare should
one be accidentally damaged again.
The gates were constructed in Gdansk, Poland by
Crist Spolka and shipped aboard a semi submersible
barge to be offloaded at Bremerhaven by Hochtief
Construction.
The gates were shipped on their side and upon
arrival, the barge was submerged to offload the
gates in the horizontal position minimising overall
draft.
SEAFLEX INVOLVMENT

To achieve the horizontal position and to counteract 300t of

concrete ballast installed in the lower section of each gate,
Seaflex were asked to provide 160t of buoyancy (consisting of
8 x 10t IBUs and 16 x 5t IBUs) and 160t of WaterLoad Bags
(consisting of 4 x 15t and 10 x 10t units). The floating crane
ENAK took the remaining
load peaking at over 500t.

During the launch phase,

all IBUs we kept at full
capacity by way of 1.6km
of airlines and four
inflation manifolds. Once
afloat, the gate was towed
clear of the barge.
At pre-determined points during the gates rotation, the IBUs
were deflated and all WaterLoad Bags emptied leaving ENAK to
complete the turn to the upright position.
On completion all Seaflex equipment was removed and made
ready for the arrival of the second gate two weeks later.
The final third gate is now due to arrive during Spring 2010.

Project Overview:
Mexilhao Project Brazil

MEXILHAO 34 GASLINE SHORE PULL

Client: Pertrobras Contactor: Acergy Brazil S.A.

Location: Santos Basin, Brazil Water Depth: 20 - 0 Meters

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Petrobras is presently carrying out a project to develop the gas reserves of the
Mexilho field in the Santos Basin in Brazil. The field lies off the coast of Sao Paulo,
approximately 160km offshore and in water depths of between 320m and 550m.
Acergy was awarded the Mexilho gas export trunkline contract which covered the
installation of 120km of 34 diameter pipeline from the fixed platform to shore.

SEAFLEX INVOLVMENT
Seaflex were approached in May 2007 to supply for rental 2t Inflatable Buoyancy in pairs to assist the shore pull in
extremely shallow water depth due to an 800m wide sand bar. The total length of the shore pull was over 2km.

The sand bar proved more of an obstacle than expected and as a result Seaflex were asked to supply additional buoyancy to:
a) increase the lift per meter to the pipeline reducing its overall draft and
b) assist the float out of the two 76mm pulling wires.

SEAFLEX FLEXIBLE BUOYANCY SUPPLIED

In total over 1800t of inflatable buoyancy was supplied. The

packed size and weight of Seaflex buoyancy enabled Acergy
to benefit from a huge saving in transport costs when
compared to shipping rigid floats.

Mono Buoyancy Unit (MBU)

INTRODUCTION
Combining the strengths of the proven Seaflex
Standard Range Inflatable Buoyancy Units with the
advantage of a single point attachment, the Seaflex
MBU is designed specifically for pipe laying applications.

The single point attachment allows the bag to operate

at any reasonable angle to the load, particularly
useful during lay downs or ship to shore pipe pulls.
The elimination of external rigging dramatically
reduces risk of damage and the single eye fixing
make rigging a simple one shackle job.
Two 3/4 penetrators mounted on the top of the
canopy are used for inflation and deflation, while
two 2psi pressure release valves are located on the
bottom of the canopy and can be used to signal
achievement of full working pressure and lift. The
bottom 3t SWL shackle is used for straightforward
attachment to a fixing on the pipe, while the top eye
bolt is of a large diameter to simplify recovery. FEATURES

Product Overview:
SEASERPENT CABLE FLOTATION

THE CONTROLLED WAY TO INSTALL CABLES IN SHALLOW WATER

Instead of using multiple floats to support a submarine cable during installation in
shallow water, the SeaSerpent is a continuous inflatable tube attached to the cable
at 1m spacing. While its support and control of the cable is excellent, perhaps its
most advantageous characteristic is the operational flexibility it allows the installer.

Supplied in lay flat form on a transport, deployment, recovery (TDR) drum the
tube is inflated as it unwinds and is attached to the cable just before the launch
point. This allows rapid and near continuous deployment.

When the correct length of cable is afloat and positioned accurately on its line, the
air is vented from one end of the tube allowing the cable to sink progressively into
the desired position. This sinking process is under complete control and may be
slowed, stopped or reversed at will.

The form stiffness developed by the SeaSerpent decreases kinking tendencies

and eliminates sagging between floats and the requirement to keep constant
tension on the cable. This characteristic, coupled with the unrivalled control
of the sinking process, allows installers much greater flexibility in procedures.
It is for instance possible to park the cable on the bottom during adverse tidal
periods and re-float it when required, or tow sections of cable to installation
sites several kilometres from the launch point.

The SeaSerpent eliminates losses of individual buoyancy units and saves a

huge amount of space and manpower at the launch point. With only 1.5m2 of
deck space required for 1km of buoyancy, the SeaSerpent offers significant
savings in transport, storage and replacement costs as well as the operational
advantages of speed and control.

Seaflex can manufacture SeaSerpent for individual buoyancy requirements although most cable weights
are applicable to Seaflexs Standard Range. The table shows Standard Range SeaSerpent specifications.
SeaSerpent and ancillary transport, deployment and recovery systems are available for hire or purchase.

Product Overview
WaterLoad Test Weights

SEAFLEX WATERLOAD RANGE

Since their introduction over ten years ago, Seaflex WaterLoad

test weights have proved themselves to be safe and reliable,
easy to use and excellent value for money.

Each unit is certified as being constructed in accordance with

rigorous ISO 9001:2000 procedures, approved by Lloyds
Register Quality Assurance, to a design that has physically
passed the 6:1 type test at TUVNEL Ltd in Glasgow.

High quality performance fabrics, reliable HF welded seams and

versatile filling/discharge arrangements have made Seaflex
WaterLoads the first choice for increasing numbers of test
houses world wide.

Capacities of 1t - 35t allow WaterLoads to be used singly or in

clusters to produce test loads of up to 100t in one cluster. Austin & McLean 300t Load Test on Maersk Advancer
Multiple clusters can be used for higher loads.

While the water filled ballast bag concept is nothing new,

several innovative features have been incorporated in
Seaflex WaterLoad Test Weights to make the users life
easier. Seaflex J Tube filling arrangement can be positioned
anywhere over the hem of the bag after attachment to the
cranes hook to prevent the risk of the fill hose being trapped
between bags.

Filling is by 2 full bore fire hose terminating in

quick release couplings compatible with standard
hydrants. The invert of all units of 15t and above are
fitted with 3 bronze camlock coupling to accept a 3
discharge hose which empties a 35t unit in 22 minutes.
Similar 2 camlock fittings on all units up to and including
10t ensure minimum time wasted after the test.

Handling the larger units has been greatly eased by

delivering them in their own dedicated storage boxes
which allows the bag to be hoisted straight out of the box
for filling, and when emptied, lowered and flaked back down
with minimal site handling. This reduces the manpower
required, reduces site time and keeps the bags protected at
all times.
