Brief Research Idea Gen Development Final Outcome

Studio Brief
You will produce a 6,000 to 9,000 word extended essay AND a related
practical artefact(s) (ie. prototype (testing of an idea) / or body of
content in response to the knowledge researched) including research
notes and documentation of development (blog/journal/poster ).
in response to an agreed question / title. The text should include
an introduction to your theme, the development of an argument
followed by a conclusion that makes clear your position at the
culmination of your enquiries.

Preparation / Research Suggestions

Use the module handbook to assist you in this module. Your reading
and primary research should be planned carefully. Try to make your
primary research visits early on. Review the available literature on
your chosen topic and make notes in advance of any tutorials / crits.
Respond to tutor comments on your CoP3 proposal. Read the
module handbook carefully. Go through your CoP material from Level
4 and 5. Attend the Level 6 CoP3 lectures which will familiarise you
with the skills required for conducting a large research project at this
level.

Mandatory requirements / Deliveries

6-9000 word dissertation, case study or feasibility study, with

accompanying portfolio of research and related practical work (which
could include records of critiques).

Design considerations follow a more structured layout

through the use of grids & type arrangement. Less is
better & for the use of colour Techno has associated
its visual with dark features such as astronomy & shape.
Although shape has been used from the beginning
of Techno a more abstract print method has been
incorporated in the two top designs & in most promotional
material that exists nowadays.

Common Techno Features,

- Bold typeface - Typeface Kerning - Shapes - Line - Print
- Composition - Grid system

Looking into the simplicity & the typography layout of the

poster as well as the printing method used to involve the
abstract form creates a dark mischievous music genre. The 02.
techno genre has always tended to work on the basis of
form, shape, line and more to attract the correct audience

02.

Straight off photography is applied to the R&B material

which is stated within my dissertation. Because its R&B
they tend to use wealthy colours to attract the more
urban audience. By the looks of these nightclub flyers
theyre attracting a more spendy audience too.

Common R&B Features,

- Photography - Effects - Multiple Type - Images

Photoshop Effects are usually common within the R&B

material as well as having multiple images and typefaces.

What Ive noticed from the R&B material which I hope to

change is that they often apply too much information &
imagery to the designs. Which is far too much for the eye
to take in at once, especially in trying to communicate a
fast message to the audience.

Speaking to the promotions manager of mint to gather

information from their Graphic Designer & to design for their
upcoming events Green Velvet

I thought it would be beneficial to look into musicians icon

symbols for the production of Green Velvets promotional
material. Understanding how a symbol can represent the
artist.

The inspiration for the layout was taken from an existing

design by the Mint Graphic Designer which involved an
astronomy theme to his designs. That particular design
to me communicated Techno so by following similar routes
helped me communicate perfectly for the upcoming Green
Velvet event.

I started off by gathering the events information to then

applying elements such shapes & lines for eye guidance
and aesthetic. Taking inspiration from the research which
gave me an idea of where to place the text, considering the
hierarchy of type throughout the development.

After constructing the development I asked a few people

what kind of genre they think it is, a few mentioned house 02. 03.
but the majority said Techno, a pleasing outcome.

02.

Ticket development worked mainly off the poster designs

but had a different layout to fit ticket size. There was also
a bit more information to be applied like Prices and ticket
numbers.

Deciding to go with the top left Ticket as I felt it stood

out through its simple layout & feather size. The type
arrangement also has an easy flow to the eye.

03.

To start off with I used Coolvetica which didnt quite

capture the right R&B look as it was too delicate & bubbly.
A more suitable typeface such as something with straight
sharp features rather than curvy would better suit the
genre.

Making further adjustments to some posters such

as involving more information of the event as well as
sharpening up Green velvets logotype by turning it into a
vector.

The green symbolic feather plays a crucial role within the

design, as the main DJ Green Velvet places a bright green
feather on his head before every set (iconic symbol) so the
scaling & positioning has to be on point to capture the
aesthetic.

02.

The structure within the Drake material stayed the same

but slight adjustments were made with kerning & the 02.
censored block layout, eventually working with Futura
Condensed Medium for it is more legible & R&B like.

With the photography, I adjusted the opacity just so it

didnt take too much attention before the info as the
censored block hides Drakes face. Having bared in mind a
lot of people might no know him from a quick glimpse

The Spot colour gold was inspired by most of the R&B

designs as they tend to involve wealth & money within
their album covers and Promotional material.

The Final outcome of the Green Velvet Promotional

material collection uses line, shape, layout & composition
in response to create a design for that particular genre in
my dissertation. A few people were torn between House
& Techno which is of similar style but Im pleased with
the final design as I received a good response from the
audience.

Question

1. What music genre is this?

2. Does it communicate the genre?
3. What makes it communicate the genre?

Responses

1. Something with a beat / Techno / House

2. Yes, It doesnt look like Rock, R&B or other genres
3. Its simplicity / Type arrangement / Lines / Spot colour

Between the two different genres, you can see a major

difference in the visual elements within the promotional
material. For R&B tend to use Photography of the artist &
bold typography whereas Techno uses lines, grids & often
place text anywhere on the design,

Ive used a spot colour to for the more vital information of

the poster, applying gold as there tends to be a lot of gold
typography within the research found.

I wanted to step away from that in common R&B style and

bring a more simple look, considering the space within the
material & to use only vital information.

02.

The tickets are simply the same as the poster but a

different structure has been applied because of the
landscape layout.

I wanted to make the tickets slightly different for people

tend to keep tickets after attending these R&B concerts.
Creating a collectible memory/experience 02.

I didnt design flyers for drake as he is too mainstream. The

event would definitely sellout without flyer distribution
whereas with Techno DJs because they are not a
commercial genre they would have to be promoted as
often as possible.
