~\ . This course is intended .for entire beginners in Russian. It is
1 designed for 160-180 contact hours and. consis1s of- an introductory
phoetics section and 10 1exical d grammaiical lessons.
The course is based minimum vocabulary necessary and
sufficient to develop e1ementary 1aguage skills-name1y those in
uderstadig spoken Russian, and speaking and reading within the
limits of the topics dealt with in the Jessons-on the basis of the
assimilated grammar and vocabu1ary.
The course. beglhs with phoetics section, which will teach
the studet to articulate Russian sounds,. understand them when
hearing them, pronounce whole Russian words and sentences, and
read and write them.
The phonetics section Jays the. foundation for s.bsequent
regular practice in grammar and vocabulary. After completig the
entire course, the student will have mastered 500 Russian words
and basic grammar (forms and constructions) with whose 'help he
will ! to build Russian utterances.
In this course grammar and vocabulary are presented in ac-
cordance with the "from the content to ihe form" and "from the
intention to the means of its expression" principle, therefore the
subsection~ of the course are etitled "How
to object", "How to n an
acjion". "How 10 designate the
place of an actio". "How to express
relatioship". "How to fid out the
time of an action", etc;
The material for study is presented in dialogical and
monological texts, exercises, ta!es, diagrams, and drawings. While
doing the exercises, the student will learn. how to talk on everyday
topics (" Family", "Work d Studies", " Fried", "
Favoue Pastime", etc.), to speak aout himself, his faimily,

The course will serve as the basis for further Russian studies;
and for the developent and iprovement of speaking skills, when \
