Answer all the questions and dont mix-up Part-A answers with Part-B.
Only non-programmable calculator is allowed.
Part A
(Marks: 5 x 2 = 10)
1. Draw a neat sketch of side view of an airplane in Steady, Straight and Level Flight
condition. Also draw all the four basic forces acting on it.
2. Write the CL and CD for minimum thrust required and minimum power required
conditions during SSLF, when .
3. Explain the difference between profile drag and induced drag.
4. Draw a neat sketch of an airplane in gliding condition and show the basic forces acting on
it.
5. Write the value of CL required if during gliding an airplane wants to remain in the air for
maximum duration of time.
Part B
6. Derive the thrust and power equations with respect to velocity in the SSLF condition.
Also plot them in thrust/ power versus velocity plot area. Explain in details what will
happen to the power required and the thrust required by an aircraft with the increment in
altitude. 4+4
Also find the velocity for power required minimum and thrust required minimum
conditions. 8
7. Show the maximum velocity in thrust versus velocity plot and also explain what happens
to this maximum velocity as the altitude increases. 4
Draw the maximum velocity versus altitude curve and show the best cruise altitude. Also
explain why it is preferred to fly at higher altitude. 4
An airplane while flying gets its engines failed at an altitude of 350 m where it starts
gliding. It tries to land at an airport at a horizontal distance of 10,000 m. find if successful
landing is possible or not when the particulars of airplane are given as below:
