How much water is required to generate 1kw of electricity

You can do a simple calculation - Gravitational potential energy is given by e = mgh

One kilowatt hour is 3600000 joules.

Suppose you have one ton of water falling down :

3600000 = 1000 kg * 9.87 m/s^2 * h

So, h = 364 meters.

In other words, when you drop 1000 kg of water from 364 meters high, it releases 1
kilowatt-hour of energy when it hits the ground.

The most efficient water turbines have an efficiency of upto 90%. The most efficient
electrical generators are similarly about 90%

Thus the value becomes about 25% more.

So the final answer is about 1 ton of water falling 450 meters every hour - this will give you a
continuous output of 1 kilowatt.
