Dear Parents/Guardians of Div.

2,

Our first term has come to a close. The classroom routines, expectations and
responsibilities are all firmly in place. Here is an overview of the Big Ideas and content
areas that will be covered this term.
Keep in mind that this preview may be added to or changed as time and the
abilities of the students dictate. Please be reminded that Mrs. Lloyd teaches every
Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays and Mrs. Rousseau teaches alternate
Wednesdays, and every Thursday and Friday. Please continue to check our class
website, regularly, as it is updated about the current happenings of our classroom and
school (southparkdiv2.weebly.com). Feel free to contact us if you have any questions
or concerns.

Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Oral Language)


-continue to participate in daily independent / buddy reading and independent book
reports
-use a variety of comprehension strategies (making predictions, making connections,
asking questions, drawing conclusions, using context clues) to deepen their
understanding of the text
-use their reading journals to reflect and respond to text in personal and creative ways
-follow the steps of the writing process (brainstorming, first draft, revising, editing, and
publishing) and utilize knowledge of the proper narrative structure to create and develop
short stories of various genres
-continue to work on editing writing for sentence structure, grammar, and conventions
-present book readings and Readers Theatre to build the features of oral language
(including tone, volume, inflection, pace, and gestures) and develop oral language
strategies (speaking with expression, staying on topic, taking turns, focusing on the
speaker, and asking questions to clarify)

Math
-increase speed and recall of multiplication and division facts to 100 (by finding
patterns, skip counting, repeated addition, doubling, halving, etc)
-order and compare fractions and understand the relationship between decimals and
fractions
-addition and subtraction of decimals to hundredths (gr 4) and thousandths (gr 5)
-demonstrate an understanding of multiplication and division using 2- or 3-digit by 1-digit
-understand the relationships between multiplication and division, multiplication and
addition, division and subtraction
-will continue to participate in math stations to apply mathematical understanding
through play, inquiry, and problem-solving
Social Studies
-continue to understand the various factors that helped shape BC and Canada (Gold
Rush, CPR)
-explore the changing nature of Canadian immigration over time and how it helped to
develop the Canadian identity

Science
-understand biomes as large regions with similar environmental features
-question and analyze how living things (humans, other animals, and plants) sense,
respond and adapt to their environments

Career Education
-continue to explore personal strengths and abilities to identify and achieve short and
long term learning goals during regular reflections, employing S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting
strategies

Physical and Health Education


-continue to develop and demonstrate safety, fair play, and leadership in daily physical
activities
-continue to understand the benefits of physical activity and exercise
-develop and apply proper technique and movement skills while learning the
fundamentals of basketball

Arts Education
-develop understanding of the elements of drama and dramatic form through
participation in readers theatre
-employ visual elements of design (eg. colour, line, shape, texture, balance, space), to
achieve a desired effect
-continue to use various processes, materials, tools, technologies, and techniques to
support creative works
-the students are learning to play the recorder instrument in Music. They are playing the
notes B,A,G, E and D. They are writing simple notation and are being introduced to
complicated rhythms like sixteenth notes.

Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies


-participate in STEM challenges to understand that designs can be improved with
prototyping and testing and that skills are developed through practice, effort, and action
-use materials, tools, and technologies in a safe and cooperative manner, and with an
awareness of the safety of others, in both physical and digital environments (during
STEM activities and Genius Hour)

French (Gr. 5)
-participate in back and forth conversational activities to build French communication
skills by using simple, high-frequency words and patterns
-discover Francophone cultural festivals and celebrations in Canada
