SC.5.E.5.1 Recognize that a galaxy consists of gas, dust, and many stars. Identify our
home galaxy as the milky way.
LAFS. 5.RI.1.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
LAFS.5.RI.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts,
including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the
grades 4-5 complexity band independently and proficiently.
Essential Question: What makes up a galaxy?

Why are you teaching this objective?
I am teaching these objectives to help give students a foundational level of
information in order to teach them about space.
Where does this lesson fit within a larger plan?
This lesson is starting big with galaxies and will help students zoom in to thinking
about solar systems
Why are you teaching it this way?
I am using a video in this lesson to engage students and to give them some basic
background knowledge. I am modeling notetaking for scientific information to help
the students understand the difference between finding relevant information and
finding fun facts.
Why is it important for students to learn this concept?
There are a lot of misconceptions about space science
Formative: Students will complete a t-chart graphic organizer and an exit question
Summative: Students will use this information to help them complete their performance
task at a later date.

The teacher needs to know what a galaxy is, how it is held together, the 3 main shapes
of a galaxy, and what galaxy our solar system is located in.
The students know information related to:
Stars
Receiving heat from the sun
The phases of the moon
Earths rotation
What a planet is
I will help students gain prior knowledge by showing a short video clip about what a
galaxy is.
I know that these students have expressed interest in space science and that are a group
of 10-11 year olds that are primarily boys.
That a galaxy and solar system are the same thing
Solar system is bigger than a galaxy
Galaxy is bigger than a universe
