8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 For the most part, going wine
tasting is about the easiest thing in
8 8 8
the world, especially in California
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 where wineries and tasting rooms
abound. Mostly, wine tasting is a
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Here are some
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
tips that have proven to be helpful
8 8 8 and are designed to help make the
sensory adventure of wine tasting
8 8 8 all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off, pack a few
8 8 8 8 8 8
essentials. Water (plenty of
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 water) and something to snack
oncrackers or a baguette.
8 8 8 8 8 8 Many wineries have picnic areas
and there are plenty of delis and
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
bakeries that can make up a lunch
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 for you, or make your own.
Be sure to nibble during the day and
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 make time for lunch. Two tips: drink
at least twice as much water as
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
you do wine, and remember that
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 you dont have to drink everything
poured into your glass.
8 8 8 Dont be afraid to ask questions.
Time again I have heard
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
knowledgeable winery workers
8 8 8 8 8 say that there is no such thing as
a stupid question, and they mean
8 8 8 that.
You can drink what you want, in the
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
order you want. If you like reds, say
8 8 8 8 so; if you dont like sweet wines,
speak up. But the idea of starting
8 8 8 8 8 with whites, then going on to reds
and then sweet wines is a good
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
guide.
8 8 If there is a particular wine you want
to try and it is not on the list, ask. Most
8 8 8 8 8 tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
8 8 8 8 8 8
Look for tasting rooms in towns.
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place
8 8 8 8 8 8 you might find wines from a
dozen or more small-to-medium
8 8 8 8 8 8 8
premium producers.

option increases the fee, but will
8 8 8 8 8 allow you to taste very unique,
old or rare wines.
8 8 8 8 8
Sit Down Tasting
A Sit Down Tasting usually
8 8 8
requires an appointment, and
there may be a slightly higher
8 8 8 8 fee than a wine bar fee. Seated in
an elegant room, you are poured
8 8 8 8 several wines by your winery
host. Expect your host to describe
the unique characteristics of each
8 8 8 8 8
wine and how it was made.
8 Walk Around Tasting
A Walk Around Tasting is
8 8 a combination of a tour and a
tasting. Your host brings along
several bottles of wine on your
8 8 8 8 tour, and may take you to a
garden area of the winery to pour
8 8 8 the first round. Then you move to
another place within the winery
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the
wines are tasted.
8 8 8 8 8 8 8
Barrel Tasting
8 8 8 Another popular tasting
experience that can be part of a
8 8 tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel
Tasting. Your guide takes a wine
thief, a special siphon placed
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 into a hole in the top of a barrel
to extract tasting samples of a
8 8 8 maturing wine. The sample allows
you to taste what the wine is like
8 8 8 8 8 8 8 in the middle of developing its
full potential.
Why make an appointment?
8 8 8 8 8
Some wineries are so small
that they need to know when you
8 8 are coming so someone will be
there to greet you. Others have
8 8 8 8 sit-down tastings that start and
end at specific times. Its always
a good idea to schedule your
8 8 8
appointments well in advance.

Magnavino Cellars
In 2008, Robert and Barbara Wagner achieved their dream of
opening a winery. Since then, the husband and wife team have
never looked back. Magnavino Cellars is a great place to visit for
fantastic wine, and a perfect location to gather with friends and
share conversation, smiles and laughter. At Magnavino Cellars,
wine is a celebration of life and love, and Robert and Barbara
strive to make each guests experience enjoyable.
The passion they have for their vines is admirable. In the cellar,
they work with stainless steel, and American and French oak
barrels to achieve the flavor profile and complexity they desire
for their wines. The result is award-winning wines with beautiful
characteristics. In the past three years, MagnavinoCellars has
won sixty-five medals from international wine competitions
including two time Best of Class for the 2010/2011 Petite Sirah
at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, a Platinum
medal for the Old Vine Zinfandel and many Gold and Silver
medals at other competitions.
The tasting room is inspired by ancient Italian villas that cover
the landscape in Italy. Here, friends and family gather to share the
experience of great wine and good company. In fact, the tasting
room is so beautiful that Magnavino Cellars often hosts events to
bring friends and family together for celebratory occasions. Guests
can even book the tasting room for private events and enjoy
Magnavino wine in the luxury of this glorious space.
With an incredible selection of varietals, Magnavino Cellars
