Problem:

Solution:

Application used to analyze the truss is GRASP

Student number, N = 10
S = 2.5 + (0.1x10) = 3.5m
ASD
o P total = 90 + 100 + 25 = 215 KN
LRFD
o P total = (1.2x90) + (1.6x100) + (.5x25) = 280.5 KN
Fy = 248 MPa, Fu = 400 MPa
Left hand side = right hand side

3. Design of Bottom Chord

Assumptions

Full transverse weld

Longitudinal weld = Transverse weld
There are 2 longitudinal welds
Steel is A36. Fy = 248 MPa, Fu = 400 MPa

Design under ASD Conditions:

Pa 806.25 2
Ag= = =5418.35 mm
0.60 Fy 0.60(248)

Appropriate steel to be used in Steel Handbook is 200x200x16 with Area =

6179mm^2

Check:

A. Tensile Rupture

Ae=uAn : An=Ag

x 55.23
u=1 =1 =0.72
L 200

Ae=6179 ( 0.72 )=4448.88 mm 2

Pa=( 0.5 ) ( 400 )( 4448.88 )=889.78 kN > 806.25 kN

B. Block Shear

Pa=0.3 FuAv+0.5 FuAt=0.3 ( 400 ) ( 200 x 14 x 2 ) +0.5 ( 400 )( 200 x 14 )=1408 kN > 806.25 kN
Design under LRFD Conditions:

Pu 1051.87 2
Ag= = =4712.68 mm
0.9 0 Fy 0.9 0 ( 248 )

Appropriate steel to be used in Steel Handbook is 150x150x18 with Area =

5103mm^2

Check:

A. Tensile Rupture

Ae=uAn : An=Ag

x 43.66
u=1 =1 =0.71
L 150
Ae=5103 ( 0.71 )=3623.13 m m2
Pa=( 0. 7 5 ) ( 400 ) ( 3623.13 )=1086.94 kN >1051.87 kN

B. Block Shear
Pa=0.45 FuAv+0. 7 5 FuAt
0.45 ( 400 ) ( 150 x 18 x 2 ) +0. 7 5 ( 400 ) ( 150 x 18 )
1782 kN >1051.78 kN

Comparison of results:

The results for under the ASD conditions have higher values compared to
those under the LRFD condition because ASD method of design is known to be very
conservative like when computing for the total P unlike LRFD having specific
reduction factors when computing for the total P. Due to ASD having larger values,
this means that the steel section to be used is also greater than that of the LRFD.
The ASD and LRFD sections are 200x200x16 with an area of 6179mm^2 and
150x150x18 with an area of 5103mm^2, respectively.
