Self Correcting Material

Learning Cycle
In order to understand how learning takes place, educators divide learning into
cycles such as Plan, Act, Observe and Reflect. Plan is the stage where new material
is introduced, Act is the stage where they develop concepts and understanding,
Observation is the stage where careful observation and analysis takes place
followed by Reflection and Reinforcement.

SCMs
In order to reinforce and consolidate concepts and skills, teachers/educators use
various strategies. One of the strategies is SCM-Self Correcting Materials. This
strategy is used at the end of a unit or topic once the students have already been
taught a skill. SCMs are used to allow students to self assess themselves and see
how much they know about a particular topic without the help of the teacher.

Purpose
SCMs are creative and fun activities for students to practice their previously learned
skills without the fear of failure or frustration. SCMs are like formative assessment
where the assessment or grades dont really count. They are just for the students to
know how much he or she knows about a certain topic and correct his/her mistakes
independently without the help of the teacher. Since SCMs are self corrective,
students can figure out what they have got incorrect or what should be the correct
answer. These are great independent practice activities that include multiple
response opportunities for self checking students responses (Self-correcting
materials, n.d.).

Our SCM Choice and Learning Outcome


Our SCM is a learning palette which can be used to reinforce any skill and can be
used from Kindergarten to grade 12. The tray and discs remain the unaltered; just
the content cards need to be changed as per the skill you want to practice. Our SCM
is targeting grade 2 students for addition and subtraction skills of single digit and 2

digit numbers in Mathematics. This activity, just like all other self correcting
activities is only to be used only when students have been taught the skill in class.
In our case, we are proposing this activity for students of grade 2 who have already
been taught the skill of addition and subtraction of two digit numbers and have
demonstrated initial independence at this skill. This activity will then act as a
practicing and reinforcing activity with the opportunity to self correct.

Critical Elements

Our learning palette took into account the following critical elements.

It is made by recycled material. We kept the cost and the three RRRs in mind
while choosing this activity-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
It provides immediate feedback without the teacher being present.
It is easy to follow.
This SCM kit can be used for any subject and is an excellent interdisciplinary
tool.
It provides students multiple opportunities.
It is colorful and appealing to students who may be kinesthetic learners who
enjoy by doing.
This activity positively impacts students who have learning disabilities by
providing a self paced and fearless environment to master the skill.
It can provide an opportunity for the teacher to carry out small group
instruction whilst the other kids are occupied in meaningful practice
opportunities.
It is not graded as grading performance may inhibit student willingness to
take risks and overcome failure.

Materials Needed to Make the Learning Palette.

12 Bottle caps of 6 different colors

One round cake tray or any round base

Card paper to make the question card

Instructions for our Learning Palette

You start with putting the card on the palette. The card contains questions and
each question has a color code at the edge of the question- either a solid color
or a color with a hole in them, like a ring. The students then answer the
questions by placing the corresponding colored disk in the slot containing the
correct answer. After completing all the questions, they turn the card over to
check the answers. If the colors of the buttons match the colors on the answer
side of the card, then the answers are correct. If not, they have to go back and
fix their answers (Paukstys, 2003).

Adaptations and Improvements

While playing the game, we came across some limitations. The boxes on the
card template were too small in case some questions are long. In order to
overcome this situation, instead of writing the question such as 3+2 on the
card template, we could just write the question number such as Question 1
and have a pile of questions on the side and the players could pick up the
relevant question card. This way we could use this game for any kind of
questions.
