1. Introduction

Automation: Automation or automatic control is the use of various control

systems for operating equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, with
minimal or reduced human intervention. The biggest benefit of automation is
that it saves labour; however, it is also used to save energy and materials and to
improve quality, accuracy and precision. Automation has been achieved by
various means including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic
devices and computers, usually in combination.
1.1. Need for Automation in Classrooms:
An ideal classroom is an environment in which teachers are able to focus solely
on their lectures and the students are able to home in on the information they are
being given. Unfortunately, this does not reach in our country. During class
hours, time is usually wasted in multiple ways such as manually keeping record
students attendance one after another.
While some of the time is also wasted in cleaning the white board again and
again which reduces the efficient use of class hours. Other disruptions besides
occur throughout class time such as temperature and light variation. These
problems cause hooked students to wander around the class guessing for the
right switch and adjusting it to equilibrate the environment back to useful
conditions. This causes disturbances for both teachers and other students,
accordingly to wipe out these irritations a smart classroom system is created that
allows the classroom to commence more efficient, and rescind any human
assistance.
Automation in Classroom:
To eliminate the above problems, following techniques in classroom is given to
make it automated classroom rather than an ordinary classroom:
Wireless Biometric Attendance System
Automatic white board cleaner
RIFD Based Automatic Door opening and closing system.
Vertical Sliding White Board
Automatic light system on board i.e. lights automatically ON/OFF as
required.

2. Automation Techniques

To automate the classroom various techniques are suggested as given below:

2.1. Wireless Biometric Attendance System

The most common means of tracking student attendance in the classroom is by

asking the students to manually sign the attendance sheet, which is normally
passed around the classroom while the professor is conducting the lecture which
may lead to attendance proxy. If the teacher manually takes attendance of
students it is a time consuming task as for a lecture of 60 minutes, attendance
approximately consumes 10 minutes depending on number of students in class
and maintaining the attendance records is very inconvenient task if number of
student are more. To tackle these issues, wireless Biometric attendance
system can be implemented which automates the whole process of taking
attendance and maintaining it.
Fingerprint identification is one of the most well-known and common biometric
identification systems. Because of their uniqueness & consistency over time,
fingerprints have been used for identification over many years, more recently
becoming automated due to advancement in computing capabilities. So, here the
fingerprint identification technique was used for maintaining the attendance
record. The record of the fingerprints of various students was maintained in a
database which can be used to take attendance of students.

Problems in Current Attendance system

Time Consuming: For a lecture of 60 minutes attendance if taken by

lecturer manually may take approximately 10 minutes depending on
number of students in a class. Thus it wastes 10 minutes of potential
lecture time which can otherwise be used for delivering lecture or any
other classroom activity.
Attendance Proxy: If attendance is taken by asking the students to
manually sign the attendance sheet, which is normally passed around the
classroom while the professor is conducting the lecture, it may lead to
attendance proxy.
Maintaining Attendance record is a cumbersome job.
Need of a transparent attendance system which can update the student
about their current attendance anytime.

5
Advantages of Wireless Biometric Attendance System

Saves potential Lecture time which is wasted in attendance.

Completely eliminates attendance proxy.
Automatically maintains attendance record of students.
Automatically update attendance record onto the server which can be
accessed anytime.

Working procedure:
The working procedure of Wireless Biometric Attendance System is given
below:

1. At first Students are supposed to enrol their fingerprint at the beginning

of the semester for a particular course. Hence their fingerprints are saved
with their name and roll number and other details in the database.
2. One Wireless biometric attendance device is given to each lecturer.
3. During lecture, a wireless biometric attendance device will be circulated
among the students and they will mark their attendance by keeping their
finger on the device sensor.
4. The attendance data is sent to a server using GPRS/Wireless Internet and
compiled by server based on time of attendance and uploaded on website
http://www.thapar.edu/index.php/webkiosk automatically.
5. The attendance data can be accessed anytime for a particular course by
student by logging into http://www.thapar.edu/index.php/webkiosk .

Based on the need Silicon Tech-labs, Biometric Attendance Management

System (Wi-Fi) can be used for the purpose. The product number for the
product is STL080.The above product can be purchased from [1] for Rs 14000.

2.2. RFID Based Automatic Door Opening or Closing System

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a technology to record the presence of

an object using radio signals. It is used for inventory control or timing sporting
events. RFID is implementation over barcode. Unlike barcode this technology
does not require line of site but a complement for distant reading of codes. The
technology is used for automatically identifying a person, a package or an item.
For this, it uses the RFID tags (small transponder transmit identity information
over a short distance when asked). Most \ RFID tags contain at least two parts.
One is an integrated circuit for storing and processing
information, modulating and de-modulating a radio-frequency (RF) signal, and
other specialized functions. The second is an antenna for receiving and
transmitting the signal. There are generally two types of RFID tags: active
7
RFID tags, which contain a battery, and passive RFID tags, which have no
battery. The main purpose of RFID technology is to keep track or record the
person/object.
In this report we focuses on the use of RFID gate entry system to use
automation in class room like metro station and full record generation of an
employee automatically on the server without any human labor. A card with
RFID tag provide to the teacher so that he only access the opening or closing of
door of class.
Problem in current system:
Department wise Teachers activity or attendance record requires lot of
human activity.
Every time security guard is required for the surveillance of class room.
Wastage of electricity.
RFID technology helps in having the complete record of teacher activity also.
Time of entrance or exiting and numbers of classes that he taken in entire
semester. No access of classroom beyond working hours without the teacher
consent is accessible. This will help in removal of safety guard who has duty to
closing or opening of the door. Moreover entrance time and closing time is
linked to the server which has database to save the daily/monthly record of
teacher automatically.

Fig. 2: RFID Based Automatic Door Opening or Closing Device

8
Advance Feature of RFID automatic opening or closing door system:
To keep the daily/monthly entry-exit record of teacher/employee of an
institute in centrally distributed and networked environment.
Display the identity of the person on different remote host with the help
of their tag ID.
Database logging of the IN- OUT time & total work duration of
teacher/employee per day.
Automatic monthly report generation of an employee which includes
relevant record.
Department wise auto report generation for a month at the end of the
month, having the same details as above.
Sending of monthly report through auto generated E-mail to each and
every teacher at the end of month
Above RFID technology can be linked with the automatic turn ON/OFF
lighting system. When a teacher make entrance in the class with his RFID
Id then lights get turn ON automatically and when there he make exit
with his RFID Id then it get off.

2.2.1. Cost Estimation of Product:

The whole system is not much costlier and easily available in market. This
above device is purchasable with Rs 1100. Advance feature of RFID technology
uses the optional biometric system with finger prints entrance along with
database management system. Advance system initial cost is high up-to Rs 6000
however easily compensated by keeping control of all the activity of students
and teacher and save lot of human work.

2.3. Automatic White Board Cleaner

Now-a-days white boards are widely used in almost every educational institute.
About 70-80% educational institute around the world uses white board as the
writing medium in their class room. They are large in size, for that reason it is:
Very time consuming process to erase the writings from the board with
duster.
Using duster also reduce the visual quality of the board.

9
It is more comfortable for teacher if automated system is used, as it
reduces his/her effort.
It is seen that while using duster teachers often have to cover their mouth
with one hand while cleaning the black-board by the other due to dust.
If a class continue about one hour then about 8-10% time become waste because
of cleaning the board using duster. Considering this an automatic white board
cleaning system can solve these problems.
Advantages of using automatic white board cleaning:
The board wiper will shorten the time and also the effort.
It takes around half time to clear the board without destroying the quality
as compared to conventional duster cleaning.
The wiper has horizontal movements and it wipes the board twice at a
short time.
Working Mechanism
Electrical motor is used as power source for the Automatic white board cleaner
system. The schematic diagram of the automatic white board cleaner is shown
below:

Fig. 3: Automatic white board cleaning system

10
It consists of a rotating eraser which is mounted on a steel rod and is free to
rotate around the rod with the help of bearings. This rod is connected to the
chain which rotates around a sprocket at the ends of the board. Left sprockets of
both the track are connected via electrical motor for synchronous action. So
when the button is pressed the electric motor starts and thus cleaning of white
board is done.
2.3.1. Cost estimation of the automatic board cleaner system

The above mechanism consists of

White board
Chains (2)
Sprocket (4)
Steel rod
Bearing
Rolling Eraser
Electric Motor
Gears
The estimated cost of above mechanism based on material used is
approximately Rs 4000. The cost depends on length of board and quality of
material used.
2.4. Vertical Sliding White Board

This report proposes the use of sliding board in place of conventional (single
board) in class room. Vertical slider board along with above explained
automatic board cleaning system is very useful in teacher as well as in student
perception. Many time vision from sideways not clear due to reflection. A
single vertical sliding white board can place in the middle where there is no
reflection from the windows and 3-4 board can place one behind another. When
the teacher require to write new thing he/she just slides to the next board.
Vertical sliding board have following advantage over single board:
It requires less area.
Teacher sustain with the previous piece of writing rather than rubbing it.
Helpful for greater strength of class, due to less reflection on board
(sideways reflection) vision for the far away students is clear.

Fig. 4: Ordinary Board in Thapar Classroom

Fig. 5: Vertical Sliding Board in Classroom

2.5. Automatic projector mode

Apart from above mentioned technique automation can be done on the board
lights i.e. when the teacher needs to use the projector the automatically the
projector mode is ON and the curtains will cover the window and lights turn
OFF via single switch.

12
Conclusions:
Ordinary classrooms requires automation for the better usage of cost efficient
technology which can make the system more efficient. Above mention
techniques Biometric attendance, RFID entrance and Automatic multi white
board system can be useful is saving lot of time in daily basis. For example
teacher use to deliver a lecture 15 min less due to attendance record, if it is
automatically done then teacher may able to utilise the time for teaching. Other
importance of this system is activity record of teacher and students can be link
to a common database server. Attendance record upload on the system
automatically which can save human labour. Apart from this this system and
devices are cost efficient and easily available in the market. The installation of
this may be costlier but it can be compensated by saving time and labour.
