My friends,
First of all, I regret to share that Stephanie Murphy has
submitted her resignation as youth minister. Many of us have
come to appreciate (if not envy) her contagious enthusiasm
and profound faith. Please join me in praying for her as she
begins this next chapter of the adventure of life. In the same Our Pastor, Fr. Bill
breath, if you know of anyone who would be interested in
leading our youth to Christ, please let me know. Applicants must be faithful
Catholics with a love for Christ and His youth ...the wisdom of Solomon, the
patience of Job, the courage of David, the humility of Mary, the passion of John
Bosco, the organization of Katherine Drexel, and the compassion of Mother
Theresa! (It is helpful but not required to walk on water and be able to multiply
bread and .ish for Life nights.) Seriously, please keep Stephanie, our youth, and
our search committee in prayer.
On a very different note, I have just returned from a 62 mile trek across the Zion
National Park in Utah. For four nights and .ive days I transversed the incredible
canyons of the vast desert wilderness. The altitude changes were incredible ...
hiking up and down thousands of feet in elevation each day ... carrying my tent,
food, clothes, etc. for the week. Highlights included Kolob Arch, Angels Landing
and the Narrows.
The big challenge in the high country was water. Zion is a desert and water is
very scarce. Despite caching water ahead of time, there were several days when I
thought I was steps away from suffering from severe dehydration. The springs
were miles apart and when we found them, they were little more than trickles of
water in a puddle. It certainly gave me a new understanding of how a deer longs
for running streams! (Ps 42). (Please dont tell me about the bene.its of dry heat.
110 degrees in the shade is HOT!)
In the solitude of the desert, it is certainly true that you can feel the presence of
the Lord. You can see and hear Him in the beauty of the Navajo sandstone
canyons, the wonder of a fawn, the rustling of the breeze, the glory of a sunset,
and in the twinkling of the stars. (If that doesnt bring God to mind, perhaps
almost stepping on a rattlesnake or realizing that you are only footsteps away
from a mountain lion will!) I offered Mass for your intentions every day!
August is a wonderful time for our parish ... a springtime as we prepare for the
new year for our preschool, religious education, faith formation programs and
another year of ministry in service to the Lord and His people. If you have yet to
take your vacation, I share with you this prayer by Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P.:
Loving Father, during this time of rest and relaxation, please repair
in me whatever is weary or broken, and revive my drooping spirit.
Let this vacation be a graced time of recollection and rejuvenation,
of deeper self-awareness and eager self-giving. May it be an
occasion of refreshment and reinvigoration a time to reclaim my
friendship with Jesus Christ, who is our Lord now and forever.

I. Wisdom 18:6-9
A Re(lection on the First Passover.
Re(lection: This part of Wisdom is
a Hellenistic-Jewish re.lection on
God's bringing the Jews out of Egypt.
We join the book toward the end,
where the author is essentially
interpreting the events of the .irst
Passover, which is "the night of the
Passover" about which we read. We
must also realize that the author
incorporated all the values
characteristic of the circum-
Mediterranean at that time. One
principle was that if a person offered
an offense, a true "Man" could not
ignore it, but must return the
offense. For him or her, "God" was
the quintessential "Man;" hence, we
should not be surprised that he or
she looks to God for "vengeance."
Finally, the "children" are the Jews
who offered the .irst "Passover
Sacri.ice" (Ex. 12:27) "in secret,"
because it was inside their homes.
II. Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19
The Power of Faith.
Reflections on Scripture
Re(lection: This composite
reading emphasizes the centrality of
the existential Act of Faith.
"Existential" means that it is
something that we experience as
intensely personal, coming out of the
very depths of our beings and
forming the ground of everyday
actions. The author focuses on the
reality that Abraham set out on a
"Journey" with the destination
unknown! Why? He trusted God. So
did Sarah, his wife, who conceived
well past menopause. And he
trusted God when he trussed up his
son, Isaac, and was ready to sacri.ice
him. Soren Kierkegaard, in his "Fear
and Trembling" has perhaps the best
analysis of the existential Act of
Faith. I strongly recommend the .irst
20 pages or so.
III. Luke 12:32-48
The Real Treasure.
Re(lection: St. Luke has not
.inished speaking (as he did last
week) about possessions. The
verses between last week's and this
week's include the instruction also
found in Matthew about assuming
the itinerant life, being unconcerned
with clothes or food. Jesus instructs
his disciples to choose poverty in the
goods of this world and choose the
treasures of "heaven." What does
this mean? He offers a parable
regarding the proper activity of a
"servant." St. Luke uses the Greek
word, doulos, which means "slave."
Generally, this word refers to
of.icials in the earliest Christian
communities, or to bishops, priests
and those laity who play roles within
the current Faith Community. St.
Luke suggests that the punishment
of derelict members of the Church
will be stark indeed! This story
offers a challenge to all of us to
whom "much has been given." While
we tend to reject a "God of
Vengeance" today, we read the First
and Third readings to gain a deeper
understanding of what responsibility
means within a Faith Community.

take the diocesan SEP class, please call the Faith
Formation office now to be registered for a
training here in our parish on Saturday, August 13th
from 1 pm to 4 pm. Registration must be called in by

the event is permitted.

poured into Youth Ministry the last 3 years.
She has decided to move in another
direction and we wish her Gods blessing in
all her future endeavors!

The 10 Commandments are a minimum level of
living, below which we must not go.
The Ten Commandments and Catholicism have
been bound together since the time of Christ. In
fact, Jesus refers to the Ten Commandments and
assures their validity in his dialog with the rich
young man in Matthew's Gospel (Mt 19:16-21).
The Catechism refers to this in item #2052.
It's important to note that each Commandment is
simply a summary of a whole category of actions.
Don't be legalistic, searching for a way around
them because their wording doesn't fit you
perfectly!
