General information
This technical circular was created in response to frequent requests in the field relating to
the setting of the generator protection.

General generator protection

Protection devices are to be provided which fully meet the requirements of the existing plant
and the regulations of the network operator, and which exhibit the following functions.
The setting values are to be coordinated with the respective network operator in coopera-
tion with the plant designer / person responsible for the plant. The setting values of the gen-
erator protection functions stated here are to be observed as maximum limits.

The specified setting values are valid for the generator unbalanced load monitors of the easYgen-3000 series multifunction relay
from Woodward.
5)
When using a different generator protection device, it must be ensured that the following maximum values are not exceeded.

- I2 / IN (current in the negative sequence component / rated current) = 8% for continuous operation

- (I2 / IN)2*t = 20 s in the event of an error

6)
The specified threshold value refers to the maximum difference between two phase-to-phase voltages.

Synchronization
The slip synchronization is advisable as a synchronization method.
At the switch-on moment, the voltage and frequency difference between the generator and
mains must be minimal.
The breaker closing times of the entire chain are to be observed and set accordingly in the
synchronization device.

General mains protection

Protection devices that fully meet the requirements of the existing plant and the regulations
of the local network operator are to be provided.
The setting values are to be coordinated with the respective network operator in coopera-
tion with the plant designers / persons responsible for the plant.
The abovementioned setting values of the generator protection functions are to be ob-
served.

If permitted by the mains operator, the use of a vector shift relay is recommended which
initiates a power decoupling when triggered. The respectively valid technical connection
conditions of the network operator are to be observed. Once power has settled, an auto-
matic reverse synchronization is recommended.
