Word Study Update

Dear Parents,
Your childs progress has been assessed in Word Study
and has been placed at his/her developmental word study
stage. His/her word study teacher is ________________.
Every Wednesday your child will bring home a new word
sort that includes the word patterns they will study that
week. Students will need to cut out and sort their words
using the word study homework menu throughout the
week. Students will need a place to store their words at
home for the week. The homework menu provides the
students with five different ways to sort and interact with
the word study pattern for the week. Some of the more
challenging sorts will be assigned alternative activities.
Each week your child must complete all five sorts (or
assigned activities), however they may choose which
days to complete each sort. The menu is due the
following Wednesday after it is assigned (1 week to
complete). Once your child has completed a sort, you
must check their work and then initial in the appropriate
box on their menu. An answer key is also provided for
your childs word sort in their packet. If you have any
further questions, please contact your childs teacher via
email.
Thank you for your support,
The 2nd Grade Team

Below is a detailed description of each homework sort:

1. Practice & Write Sort Prior to the sort, the words need to be cut
out. The large boxes with the bolded words are the categories/patterns
that your child must sort their words into. Students pick up one word,
read it aloud, and then place it in the correct category. Repeat the
previous step until all words have been sorted. After sorting all the
words, the student should write down their sorted words on the back
side of their homework menu in the appropriate categories. A parent
should check the students work when they are finished.
2. Word Hunt Using a book or provided story, your child should look for
words that fit into the categories for their sort each week. This should
be completed separate from their 20 min. of reading. When your child
finds a word, they should record it on the back side of their homework
menu in the dotted word hunt sort box under the correct category.
Students should find and record a minimum of 3 words for each
category they have that week. A parent must check the students work
when they are finished.
3. Blind Sort Students will need a blank piece of paper with the word
sort categories for the week written at the top. A parent or sibling
should read each word aloud to the student without showing them the
word. Students should write down the word under the correct category.
After all words have been read aloud and sorted, please check your
childs work for accuracy.
4. Speed Sort Students will need their pre-cut words and a
clock/stopwatch. Students will time themselves to see how long it
takes to sort all of their words into the correct categories. Once they
have finished, please check the sort for accuracy. If you would like to
extend this sort, students could try to beat their score throughout the
week.
5. Open Sort Students sort their words into their own created
categories (ex. Number of vowels, parts of speech, number of syllables,
beginning/ending sound, rhyming, etc.) After your child has sorted their
words, please check it for accuracy.
