(Julius Wilhelm Richard Dedekind (1831 1916): Mathematiker. Entwickelte die Idee des Schnittes im Kontinuum zur Definition der irrationalen Zahlen und zur Erfassung des Wesens der Stetigkeit (Stetigkeit und Irrationale Zahlen,
1872). Formulierte als erster die Definition einer unendlichen Menge (Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?, 1887). Indem er die unendliche Menge als Grundbegriff nahm, mit dessen Hilfe sich der Begriff einer endlichen Menge
erst bestimmen lsst, vollzog er in aller Ruhe, klar und przise, eine kopernikanische Wende im Denken ber die Welt. Gab damit seinem Freund Georg Cantor Rckendeckung fr sein Projekt einer mathematischen Betrachtung
der Welt vom Standpunkt der reinen Mannigfaltigkeit (die Mengenlehre). Prgte nachhaltig nicht nur die Substanz, sondern auch den Stil der modernen Mathematik.)

(Julius Wilhelm Richard Dedekind (1831 1916): Mathematician. He developed the idea of cutting into the continuum in order to define the irrational numbers and to comprehend the essence of continuity (Stetigkeit und Irrationale
Zahlen, 1872). He was also the first to formulate a clear definition of infinite sets (Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?, 1887). By taking the infinite set as the fundamental concept, from which the concept of a finite set is to be
derived, he very calmly, with clarity and precision, carried out a Copernican revolution in thinking about the world. He thus gave strong support to his friend Georg Cantors project of a mathematical description of the world in terms
of pure multiplicity (set theory). Dedekind had a lasting influence on both the substance and the style of modern mathematics.)
