TheStoryofLightFestival(SOL)hasbeenconceptualizedbyagroupofscientists,artistsand
educatorswhowanttochangetheconversationaroundscienceandtakeittothegeneralpublic.We
believescienceisbeautifulandcanbetaughttoeveryonethroughartanddesign.Wethinkthe
universeisamagicalplaceanditstrueststoriesshouldnolongerremainhiddenbehindequationsand
intimidatingtextbooks.AndweplantodothisbytellingtheoldeststoryintheuniverseTheStory
ofLight.

ABOUTTHEFESTIVAL

Theyear2015hasbeendeclaredTheInternationalYearofLightandLightbasedTechnologiesby
theUN,andSOLmarksoneofthefirstlargescaleinternationaleventsintheircalendar.Itisalsothe
firstsciencemeetsartfestivaltobeconceivedandhostedinIndia.

Thefestivalemployslightitsbeautyanduniversalityanditsconnectionswithscience,technology,
nature,culture,spirituality,history,andcosmologyasamediumtochangeperspectivesandshow
realityjustalittlebitdifferently.

SOLwillbeheldinIndiastourismcapitalofGoafrom1418January2015,wherewewillgive
nearly100,000tourists,students,andlocalresidentscompletelyfreeaccesstoeverythingfromlarge
scalepublicinstallationstocuratedscreeningsandmindbendingworkshops.

ABOUTTHECURATION

Atthecoreofthefestivalisaseriouscommitmenttoprovidingatrulycollaborativeplatform
forartistsandscientists.Weputoutaglobalcallforproposalsthatwereinteractive,
educational,scientificallyaccurate,artisticallydriven,andlargerthanlife.The45projects
selectedcomefromallovertheworld:Australia,Brazil,TheCzechRepublic,India,Italy,
Japan,theNetherlands,Portugal,Spain,theUK,andtheUS,coveringinstallations,
performances,screenings,andworkshopsonthestreetsofGoa.Theprojectscollectively
exploretheroleoflightacrossthethemesoflightandlife,seeingandperceiving,lightin
technology,andouruniverse.Theselectionwasbasedontheconcept/intent,educational
impactandexecutionabilityoftheartist/scientist.

CorporationoftheCityofPanjimandtheGovernmentofGoafortheirsupporttohostthefestival,
andtheTheOpenUniversity,LeidenUniversity,andTheHomiBhabhaCentreforScienceEducation
(TIFR),whohaveplayahugeroleinthereviewofourproposalsfortheiraccuracyandeducational
value.
