How many hours should one study to crack the civil services

exam?
Provided that you have to start from scratch.
Would like to get an opinion even though it varies in person to person. In my case it took so
many days to finish some basic NCERT's. Wondering how people manage their precious time?
Thanks in advance and all the very best :)

Its not about hours to become an IAS but its about gaining the required level of
understanding which UPSC expects. More than time, it is the quality that matters. Good
books, frequent revision, wide range awareness, broad opinions, scientific thinking,
personality development, general reading habit in life, etc help utilize our time with joy and
interest. IAS is a long marathon and needs proper concentration. So whether you give 5
hours or 10 hours, what matters is your quality of concentration of mindmind while
studying.

See ideally you should study for 45 hours dedicatedly. If you are taking some coaching, this
45 hours does not include that. 45 hours of self study is required. Also, the quality of
studies matter. You are physically in front of a book but your mind is somewhere else, that
time is a waste. IAS is more about current affairs, for that your mind should be open all day.
You should be reading newspaper (not in those 45 hours) and analysis the news, note
down the key points.
Concentrate on effective studies, be away from distractions like your phone, at the time of
study and you will surely succeed.

Its not about hours you spend, its about concepts you develop while you study. Idea is to
work on daily and weekly plans, so as to complete the static and dynamic parts of syllabus. If
you are starting from scratch do develop the habit of covering the particular number of
concepts rather than studying particular number of hours.

so nothing to worry in that just keep going with the same spirit ... you will surely achieve it...
just give your best to it ..
ALL THE BEST..

But again it depends on your own strategy of preperation and how you tackle your subjects.

One day you and I work hard to seek water from the earth. We plough all day long. I plough
4 hectares in one day (I am Hulk), you dig 30 meters in same (you are the Shkatimaan, the
drilling man). I got many things during my this work some old coins, some big stones you
got water only.

Q 1 Who did hard work ?

Q 2 Who is still thirsty ?

some people work hard same as others but not in right direction.

Story no 2
One day we have to irrigate our fields. This day I have a 400 horse power pump water and
you have 4 horse power water pump. Now I irrigate a same amount of field in 5 hours you
and your machine takes a whole day still dose not complete the irrigation. Now you decided
to run the pump all night and on the next day your pump succumb to fire and heat.

Q 1 Why some people have greater capacity ?

Q 2 Did you see what happen if you do not understand you and your capacity and wants to
did a 3 day job in 1 day ?

For many candidates life is very light, no struggle, always cozy and comfortable, and
somehow or other way they never put themselves on test.
Conclusion? They can not develop competence in their whole life. They never know what are
they capable of ? Suppose suddenly they like something fancy (IAS) for which hard work is
the only key. What happen to them ? ..perhaps ...succumb to fire and heat if want to achieve
before its latency period.

Think if our mother never let ourselves walk free because of fear that we will
fall and keep ourselves always in her lap. Will we ever learn how to walk.

How to develop a 400 HP guts, liver, mind, IQ ? Put your body and mind to test, see what
can you do. Toil hard as much as you can. Push your limits everyday. Crawl for that 1 marks
which is impossible to achieve. It is easy to reach to 99 from 30 marks. It is hard to gain that
1 mark.

Some people out there clear the CSE even after doing job while some.....
So you see how some people sincerly hard work for one day that they get ill, and JUNTA
says bechara padhte padhte beemar pad gaya. Koi coffee bana k pila deta isko to aaram
ho jaata :D

First of all you do not know exactly which student was actually sincere and who was not
Secondly there are many students who make big mistakes but do not realize until it is too
late
Some people become overtly overconfident and this leads to their downfall
Still there are others that unknowingly demotivate themselves and end up on the losing side

Cse is an exam that needs more of smart work than hard work and keeping a perfect balance
between all subjects

Studying 16 hours for one day cannot be called sincerity but studying 8 hours daily with full
dedication and interest is. I have seen So many people who really work hard for this exam
but they don't put their heart along with brain in their preparation. This is what leads to
failure.
We are not programmed machines.. we cannot just study a lot and become Ias. We have to
balance the things.
We gotta put whole hearted efforts. We gotta enjoy this journey.
Another major reason for failure is the fear of failure.
'By being fearful, you are attracting failure' . These are not the exact words but I read this
quote in some book of Paulo Coelho.

So... Realise your capabilities, work on your limitations and stay motivated!

Definitely yes! Because there is no limit to the human race :) but in order to reach your goal
you will have to give it all you got . You may not get there in your first try but remember if u
believe you can do there s nothing and nobody that can stop you . So I would suggest you to
do the following .
1. Talk to yourself. Hain confidence and belief that you can achieve and keep telling yourself
every now and then. Because this will get registered in you subconscious mind( positive
thinking is always a plus point)
2. You should have full information about the exam , marks and everything .
3. Pick the best books.
4. Start studying.
5. Stay focused.
6. Do not give up.

If you want a measure on "how hard should I/anybody work to crack civil services" then
sadly there is no tangible measuring parameter. But on the brighter side I can tell you what
it takes and what the exam actually demands from the candidates.

Get discipline into your life ( I am still working on it!). Have a time schedule and
follow it religiously.
Give yourself the hope and confidence of cracking it before you commence the
preparation.
I wouldn't recommend any number of hours but personally I feel 4 hours is a
must.
Your routine must include: healthy food, regular breaks, adequate sleep.
Once you start preparation and look at previous question papers you will
understand what time schedule and strategy will suit you.
Take care that you are not toooo relaxed because it leads to discrepancies in
your preparation. A sense of fear and tension must be present for this look at the
number of applicants and selected candidates every year, it will send chills
through your spines.
At last, I feel no one on this earth would be a better advisor than yourself when it comes to
CSE because it is a unique exam which tests you as an individual not like a sheep in the
flock.

First things first, you can't crack IAS because someone (your parents, or society) wants you
to do so. IAS is one exam which tests your knowledge, perseverance and grit. If you really
love studying or can develop the love for long study hours, it is not at all difficult. Read blog
posts of Gaurav Agarwal and you will get the idea of what I am saying. You need a discipline
to study for long hours. In the endeavor to help aspirants focus on GS but also keep a good
preparation for CSAT paper 2, I have devised a course for it. Visitcsatprep for more

By the way, an average student, whats that?

I believe in KARMA. The more sincere you are with your efforts, you will be able to
perform accordingly. Even till now, what you consider yourself average , its just theresult
of effort-sincerity-performance combination. (One consider himself/herself average,
above average or below average based on his performance.)

[If one consider himself/herself an average one, he/she may have developed serious
inferiority complex, he/she need to overcome that.]

In general, my dear fellow aspirant, as I consider, studies, learning and preparation

are strictly personal thing. One knows very well his weaknesses and areas of
strength. So, you will have to find your own formula. What you need to do is try to
eliminate your weaknesses, be true to yourself and your efforts, afterwards you will
forget this average tag of yours.

Now, particularly for CSE, one need to find a genuine reason why you want achieve this
feat. Think about it? (After that no one going to stop you.**)

{* Do consider Hemanth Kumar Sirs answer, thats just another side of the picture.

** Ifs and buts are applicable.}

As my mentor say,

That is chance, you have and everyone else has, to clear this examination. Just 0.001%

More than 99% of the people who take up this exam fail to clear it. Only the top 1% get into
the rank list. But don't get daunted by the numbers, they are just numbers. Out of all the
aspirants, there will be hardly 20003000 serious aspirants who will be competing to get
into that merit list. So, your competition is with them only.

It doesn't matter if you are intelligent or average, this exam doesn't ask you about your past
credentials. But now you have to that dedication and zeal to crack the examination. There
are hundreds of examples who were average and have done it in the past.

This exam requires a man with limited knowledge. BUT limited knowledge of everything. He
must be knowing something of everything.

The only way to conquer it, is to face it!

there is no certain method to test whether one can crack UPSC or not.
but deciding whether to take up UPSC or not should come after self analysis.

ask yourself
what do you want to be for the next forty years of life??
what are your priorities?
if you are priority is to lead a luxurious and comfortable life with bmws at your disposal
then UPSC is not for you.(even though if you are corrupt you canmot show your filthy
income and the life of a civils servant is hectic till end of your career.

if after all your calculations, you arrive at a decision that - yes, UPSC can be a good career
for me (iam telling all this because you'll loose motivation in time of preparation if you don't
have a strong will to clear this), then start analyzing yourself from the exam point of view.

1)see some previous prelims papers try to solve them(you will score less but there comes a
feeling that it can be cleared).
2)see some sample mains answers from INSIGHTS in comment section andanswer a few on
the matters you knoe to know whether you an write well.
3)see some interviews of successful candidates, observe how they achieved that place of a
topper.
before a year they are at same stage as you are-analysing themselves.
they sorted it out, prepared well and cracked it.
there is nothing that is impossible but your effort makes difference(i am not talking BS, its
true if you sit at home watching tv nothing happens but if you cut down tv and start working
miracles happen). to crack this exam one should atleast devote 4 hours a day for reading
entire year. are you up for it?? ask yourself.
thank for A2A.
hope this helps. all the best.

Well Indian civil services are one of the toughest exams in the country. You need good
people to run the administration of the nation and hence you need higher level scrutiny of
the candidates.

The Indian civil service exam has been conducted annually since 1853 and it is interesting to
note that though the british ruled us, their civil service exam is modelled on ours which only
was introduced in 1870's!
So, since the job guarantees unbelievable social mobility, prestige and power to mould
national policy, these are highly coveted and attract the brightest and most hardworking
aspirants. The examination per se is not that difficult; the fact that those aspiring for it are
incredibily prepared makes success in this a tough nut to crack!

You need decent, regular and consistent efforts to be able to give yourself a fair chance. To
quantify this into how many attempts or hours or days is a fool's game.

Work hard and all the best :)

Yes, sure you can. There are individuals who have cleared Civil Services and IAS exams
without coaching. But this is possible only when you are equipped with all the resources.
You might get the books, newspapers and other information from the internet, but what
about the test series? Actually, there is solution for this also. You can get the test series and
notes delivered at your home from institutes like Vajiram And Ravi. The coaching center for
Civil Services offers postal study material for the students who want to study at home.

You can read NCERT books

Read newspapers like The Hindu
Magazines like Frontline,Yojna Political & Economic Weekly
Order postal study material from Vajiram and Ravi

avail it. Now you have n number of resources. Find one mentor who has already given the

Even i followed many type of students during my academics, I feel that there are basically
three type of students, One who is good in study from their childhood,I don't know what the
reason behind this but genuinely they gets awesome marks in their exam with less efforts as
compared to other. Second who is poor in studies and gets poor marks in exam but they
never mind it, because they are not much interested in studies. The third one, who is average
or poor in studies but they are hard working students and also have an ambition to achieve
their goal. They have passion for their goal in such extent that they can do anything to
achieve this. Many of my college friends who were not good in studies at start but they
sincerely put their effort and I found that they got good marks finally and some of them
have good job as they want and have a comfortable life. So you know in a better way that in
which category you should put yourself and keep uplifting from there. Always remember
that you will have to be very clear toward your goal if you aspire to crack such type of tough
exams like civil services. Some time you will feel demotivated but you will have to be strong
enough for continuous struggle. No one will always motivate you except yourself, so if you
actually want to achieve big goal, firstly you must have strong belief in yourself and
continuous moving aproach. No matter where you are at present but it matters how your
progress going on. So keep yourself up but never be overconfident. At last what I want to say
that Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still.

This depends on why you think you are weak in studies.

1. Do you get less marks? If yes, This is no criteria on the basis of which one should
decide his aim.
2. Do you not find studies interesting? If yes, then if you want to become an ias
officer you should develop some interest. Coz this is a very harsh journey and
you will lose hope at some point or another. Only interest can goad you to start
studying again.
3. Do you spend very less time studying? Then there is a problem to be solved. You
can study for less duration at a stretch but then take a break and start again.
This is not an exam where you study at the last day and score.
4. Are you afraid to work hard? If yes, you have to work hard to achieve anything
good in life. Either you can put in your effort now and lead a simple life in the
future or you can lead a simple life today and not study but then you will have to
work hard for the rest of your life.
My belief is that everyone is equally intelligent and thus the one who is weak in some way is
only due to the fact that he leads life in a certain way that is deteriorating his capabilities.

Written Fri
Yes, you can.

But the real question here is do you want to?!!

If you want to crack IAS nothing can stop you. Start your preparations today and work hard.

Ill post a famous patience story here to motivate you.

Like any plant, growth of the Chinese Bamboo Tree requires nurturing through water, fertile
soil, and sunshine.

In its first year though, we see no visible signs of growth in spite of providing all of these
things.

In the second year (again), there is no growth above the soil.

The third, fourth yearstill show no signs of anything happening.

Our patience is tested, and we begin to wonder if our efforts caring for and watering the tree
will ever be rewarded. We start to doubt ourselves and question the value of our efforts.
Inevitably, we contemplate quitting.

But then finally in the fifth year something amazing happens

The Chinese Bamboo Tree grows 80 feet tall in just six weeks!

But think for a moment, does the Chinese Bamboo Tree really grow 80 feet in six weeks?
Did the Chinese Bamboo Tree lie dormant for four years only to grow exponentially in the
fifth?

Or, was the little tree growing underground, developing a root system strong enough to
support its potential for outward growth in the fifth year and beyond?

The answer is (of course) obvious. Had the tree not developed a strong unseen foundation it
could not have sustained its life as it grew. The same principle is true for people.

People, who patiently toil towards worthwhile dreams and goals, building strong character
while overcoming adversity and challenge, grow the strong internal foundation to handle
success. Meanwhile get-rich-quickers and lottery winners usually are unable to sustain
unearned sudden wealth. They havent become the person they need to be to support such
success.

And had the Chinese Bamboo Tree farmer dug up his little seed every year to see if it was
growing, he would have stunted the trees growth. In other words, the actions caused by self-
doubt wouldve halted the miracle from ever taking shape and cause him to go backwards.

You and I are the same. It takes faith to work while you wait. It takes belief in yourself to
keep going. It takes confidence to trust that you always get paid for how hard you work
sometimes now, often times later, always eventually.

You have to keep going. You have to keep fighting.

Success is always slower than we want but its worth it. The only questions are how bad do
you want it? And how long are you willing to work for it?
Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid of only standing still.

Most of the aspirants cracking IAS or preparing for it are not sure if they are strong in
studies or not .

Lets accept you were weak in studies got low grades . So you know what you were , now
since you have dreamt of IAS , all this while when you knew that you were weak . There's
something that tell you that you can do it , so going by your description means you were not
weak , you just were not upto mark - but then lets answer a few questions ?

Does this exam thrill you ?

Do you think it's the goal which won't let you sleep till you are done ?
Is it some thing you want badly ?
Is IAS all you want ?
Does the persona of an IAS officer gives you goosebumps ?
if answer of above questions is yes , come to the field . Enjoy the path , we all are same ,
nobody is better just feel & youll be best eventually . Even if you are doesn't matters what
matters is the willingness motivation . I have seen the brightest academicians with broken
spirit and zeal and they could not have this feast , so what is required is the energy to
never backdown, irrespective of the grades you secured till date .

Its a most usual question by the students prepraing for the civil services examination.

Look, UPSC is one of the toughest examination in India..Every year atleat 8 lakhs student
fill the form..6 lakh write the exam and from them only 1000 crack the examination, and
only 100150 become IAS officers..

But you may heard it, Nothing is impossible. The word itself say,I m Possible.

So,

Start reading NCERT books from class 6 to 10 and complete it within 6 months..Along with ,
go through current affairs..Read The hindu newsapaper and its editorials..

After buy some important books for UPSC.The books are also available online and differnt
shops..

Go through full focus and dont give up.There will be situation in life when you will feel
demotivated and extremely low..Try to be focused and also enjoy .

No one can say he or she is weak you can crack.

First change your thinking that you are weak.

Start from new fresh mind and don't think what you were.
IAS requires lot of preparation if you give 15 months to it seriously you will get
the output.

IAS requires just two thingsyou should be mad about this examand second, you should
be ready to work hard

It does not matter, whether you are topper or an ordinary studentbecause when a person
enters into UPSC preparation, each and every student is on same footingSO, if you really
want to do it and are mad about it..just go for it..

and my words.if you really work hard and with zeal and consistency, you are going to crack
it in for sure

So,go for it

When you are weak at studies . You have 2 options .

1] Become a Software Engineer

OR

2] Primary or Secondary school Teacher

Believe me , every weak student in my class has been placed in top MNCs as Software
Engineer. Dont go for IAS . You will end up wasted.

Issac Raja Ratna Kumar Udayagiri, 2017 IAS Aspirant

Written Apr 8, 2016
Yes you can
First decide why you should step into india's prestigious civil services.
Cracking civil sevices means not all about knowing lot of things but knowing things with lot
of clarity.
Make sure you can answer anyquestion from ncert 6th to. 10th social and sciences and some
books and some chapters in 11th and 12th.
Having crystal clarity in syllabus and selection of books also helps you very much. As there
are lots of materials in the market try to choose the best.
Have a touch with current affairs.
The hindu
Yojana and couple of local language newspapers of your region.
Read previous toppers interviews and tips, they are very informative and they also motivate
you.
Though you are not good at academics you can clear civils in 2 years if you are seriously
dedicated though a bit of luck works..
Thank you
