were the recipients of
awards at the 2017
Scholastic Art Awards pro-
gram.
The Michigan Thumb
Region exhibition took
place Monday, Jan. 30 at
the Macomb Center for the
Performing Arts.
The event featured
more than 2,600 student art
entries, judged in 16 cate-
gories. The exhibition will
continue to run through
Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Festival Auction.

Almont NHS beating drum for heart health
Annual Red Out basketball
fundraiser is set for Feb. 17th

spearheading an effort to
raise awareness among
young people of the bad
habits and lifestyle choices
that can lead to cardiovas-
cular diseases.
To help spread that
message, NHS members
have formed a committee to
sponsor the schools 2017
Red Out Day basketball
game/fundraiser on Friday,
Feb. 17.
NHSCommittee mem-
bers Mariah Smith, Rebecca
Measel, Paige Walton,
Meredith Rinke and Alex
Winslow, will be at the
game cheering on the
Raiders, while raising funds
for the American Heart
Association.
Mariah said the stu-
dents will be selling t-shirts,
wrist-bands, paper hearts,
key chains and paper air-
planes before and during
the Feb. 17 boys basketball
game, which starts at 7 p.m.
Our school has put on
this event for the last cou-
ple of years, said Mariah,

S. Almont avenue for a

mobile home. Assistant Fire
Chief Andrew Kustowski
reports that smoke could be
seen from the corner of
M-53 and Borland Road
while units were responding
to the fire. Firefighters were
told the home was fully
involved and everyone was
out of the home. On arrival
heavy fire was found in the
northeast corner of the home
in a bedroom. Kustowski
says firefighters were able to
quickly knock down the fire
and prevent it from spread-
ing to nearby homes.
While the structure of
the home is still intact there
is considerable damage from
smoke and heat that make
the home and the contents a
total loss, Kustowski says.
A mother and her son
and daughter were living in
the home; another resident
was away.
Imlay City firefighters
were assisted by the Attica
Fire Department and Imlay
City Police.
At the same time,
Kustowski says firefighters
were alerted to a fire alarm
at Imlay City High School.
The alarm was covered by
Almont Fire Dept., and no
issues were found at the
school.
Fire Crews worked
very hard to keep the dam-
age contained to the build-

says. The fire had a good
jump start on us. We were at
the hall getting ready to
cross-train with Attica Fire
Department which allowed
us to arrive on scene very
quickly.

utility emergencies, says

Klein points out that
many of those who are
sudden loss of heart func-

flowing.
Every year, approxi-
mately 326,000 people in
the U.S. fall victim to sud-
den cardiac arrest at home
or in public locations such
as schools, with only 10
percent surviving. Prompt
delivery of CPR and defi-

Lenny Miller touched lives of many

I would like to share
some thoughts I had as I sat
among 25 of the most ver-
satile, hard working, loving
and determined young peo-
ple who were all raised many events are catered

thing from monitoring vital
signs and setting up IVs, to
offering pillows and a
sheet to visitors like me
who are spending the
night.
Its impressive beyond
words what their work day

spent on their feet dashing
from one room to the next,
dispensing life-saving
drugs to multiple individu-
als whose needs are as dif-
ferent and varied as all the
colors in the rainbow. The

memories.
Two years after
Grandpa Floyd passed,
Granny married Poppy
Roy and built the house in
Phelps, an Appalachian
hamlet not ten minutes
from the McCoy Bottom
where my grandparents
raised their brood. During
summer vacations, my sis-
ters and I played in Phelps
alleys with neighbor kids
as Dill did with Scout and
Jem in Maycomb,
Alabama.
I cannot imagine a
more enchanted youth.
How strange, then, to
be adults all of a sudden
and open the coal bin door
without Grannys permis-
sion-more so to take her
sions.
Then our mothers.
Finally, my in-laws
home.
Patty and I lifted the
lawnmower off a heap of
coal and from the dark
hole.

was the guest of honor at
the Almont Lions Club on
Monday evening, Feb. 6.
Wineman represents 46
Lions clubs that comprise
the Thumb Lions 11-D2
District.
The visit marked
Winemans first since
assuming the duties of
District Governor in
January.
Before enjoying a meal
with Almont Lions mem-
bers, Wineman spoke of
this years Lions theme,
ROAR, which he said is
indicative of Lions clubs
roles within their respective
communities.
Its really an acronym
for speaking out, he said.
The R stands for reach-
ing out and reconnecting

waterways. A staffer for
Mr. Mitchell told a constit-
uent that Paul voted that
way because the regula-
tions were burdensome.
I find the polluting of
air and waterways to be
burdensome to the health
and well being of those of
us who enjoy breathing and
having access to fresh
water.

Though it requires a lot
of time on the road, its a
challenge and duty
Wineman cherishes.
I like getting out to the
clubs and meeting people,
he said. I really appreciate
how so many of you came
up to introduce yourselves.

Lion is all about.
Each Division Chair report-
ed on behalf of their divi-
sion recognizing the suc-
cessful practices. The
F.I.R.E. Division Chair,
Danny Negin, highlighted
that he and his volunteer
Section Chairs implement-
ed practical strategies to
encourage giving among
the Finance, Insurance and
Real Estate Division.
The approach of this
years Campaign Cabinet
was stronger than past
years, because the number
of volunteers increased.
The volunteers donated
their own time, and went
above and beyond their
normal job, to impact the
community.

Michigan share much in
common with the flora and
fauna found in Minnesotas

Sure, we have different cli-
mates and hardiness zones
than our neighbors to the

Pizza served 5:30-7 p.m. The event will be held in the upper banquet room of the
American Legion Hall, 1701 W. Genesee St., Lapeer. There will be a short 15-min-
