Dear President-Elect,

Did you know that every 90 seconds, a person is injured from a drunk driving car accident? I am

Amelia Bell, student of Casa Grande High School, here to speak of the dangers inflicted by drugs and

alcohol on drivers. At just 10 years old my close family friend was killed in a horrific car accident, and

her mother and sister both put in critical condition. The cause of this tragedy: a driver who put cocaine

behind the wheel. Stricter laws on alcohol and drugs must be enforced, especially when dealing with the

driving of motor vehicles.

Laws provide restrictions on how high the alcohol levels in a person can be when driving, yet the

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims that a person is injured by a drunk driving

accident every 90 seconds. Drugs and alcohol are not always meant for harm, but when used illegally they

become criminals. Crashes, collisions, catastrophe, all caused by these unnoticed villains in society, are

becoming more and more profuse. When used carelessly, narcotics and liquors become not only

something that you use, but something that uses you. Protect the safety of our country by keeping these

criminals off public roads.

The dangers of driving under the influence put the safety of the environment and community at

risk. For the security and protection of the adults and children on the road and everywhere around it, strict

drug and alcohol laws are a necessity. You dont have to be Sherlock Holmes to know when an

intoxicated driver is on the road. The mere potential of this danger threatens the safety of all innocent

citizens.
Damage caused by drug and alcohol impaired driving costs the United States approximately $199

billion every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. American adults are

paying hundreds of dollars each year for the results of drunk and drugged driving, whether they were the

ones causing it or not. The expenses of repairs, medical fees and fines caused just by these crashes are

costing everyone much more than expected each year. But this could change.

As the president of the united states you obtain the power to improve the safety and security of

your country. Changes must be made to limit the number of drunk and drugged drivers. Changes must be

made to limit the billions of dollars spent on DUI crashes each year. Changes must be made to limit the

deaths, the losses, the grief and sorrow. By increasing the surveillance on drug or alcohol impaired

driving, we could decrease the destruction caused by it. Enforcing more frequent drug and alcohol testing

on the roads will reduce the amount of motor vehicle accidents and crashes. The National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration confirms that methods such as sobriety checkpoints and ignition locks

prove to prevent drunk and drugged driving. We also must raise awareness of the risks of drugs and

alcohol, especially when behind the wheel, as well as discourage the consumption, sale, and distribution

of drugs and alcohol.

Just as there are arguments in favor of this cause, there will always by opposing opinions. How

will the reinforcement of alcohol and drug abuse laws ensure the safety of American drivers? Arent other

distractions such as cell phones and technology just as important of a problem? Yes, it is true that

decreasing or even eliminating DUI accidents will not completely guarantee the safety of everyone, there

will always be other distractions, but its a start. Simply checking drivers every once in awhile and

encouraging youth to avoid the path of driving under the influence will cut the amount of destruction

dramatically. You may also argue that the number of deaths caused specifically by DUI crashes are small

compared to other larger matters, such as war or shootings. However, the fact of the matter is that

thousands of lives are taken each year by intoxicated drivers, which when added up, is just as fatal as any
other dangerous problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proven that about 4,000

drivers are killed each year under the influence of drugs, not even counting those that are killed because

of drugged drivers. Death by DUI accidents are a serious and relatively common fate, that not many

acknowledge until its too late.

So please, join me in my goal to eliminate the deaths, decrease the injuries, and slash the

expenses of drunk and drugged driving car wrecks. Help me to raise awareness of this fatal cause that

hangs right next to our homes, around every city block, and through every town in this country. By

reinforcing harsher laws, we could put an end to the tragedies caused by drug and alcohol abuse on the

roads that threaten all of America.
