Letter from the President
What a year this has been for Iota Kappa! I am so proud of how our
chapter continues to grow and strengthen in the bond. With the addition of
the Zeta class in Spring 2013, last fall was one of our best semesters yet
for service. The Cavalier Marching Band had a record 8 home games last
semester, which meant our service was at an all time high. During band
camp we donated drill binders for all 350 members of the CMB and
provided freeze pops after morning drill rehearsals. During game weeks we
helped prepare for the games by assisting the uniform crew in setting up
the band building and the Student Activities Building (which the band uses
after the game). In addition, all of our sisters helped out with Band Day, a
large recruiting event for the CMB, by setting up the stadium and getting
the high schoolers checked in. All in all, IK made their presence known in
various ways throughout the fall semester while fulfilling our purpose of
serving collegiate bands.
In the fall of 2012, IK had their first Women in Band Luncheon and I
was pleased to see that event happen again this year. This years event
took place in November and we had two guest speakers: Mrs. Kristin Koch,
a former member of the Western Michigan colorguard, and Tracey Stewart,
a graduate student at UVa and TBS sister from Eta Delta at Howard
University. Both women spoke on how band has influenced their lives post
college, which directly aligns with our mission of promoting women. I
enjoyed attending this event this year and hope it continues to evolve and
grow in the future.
On a more personal note, I would like to say how much this chapter
means to me. Over my 4 years in IK, I have met and had the pleasure of
working with so many wonderful and influential people. Tau Beta Sigma
has given me so much more than I could have ever imagined and cannot
wait to see how it influences my life as an alumni. It has been a pleasure to
have been selected to serve and I am looking forward to seeing how Iota
Kappa grows in the upcoming years.

This Year in Beta Chi
Hello Sisters of Iota Kappa!
This year has been a very busy, but very Brotherhood filled one
for Beta Chi. In the fall, we were kept very busy by all of the tasks we
aid the Cavalier Marching Band with in order to help it run as smoothly
as possible. We enjoyed seeing both Brothers and Sisters work
diligently as the Uniform, Equipment, and Gameday crews were
assisted by both the Fraternity and Sorority to the best of their
abilities. In addition, Beta Chi hung out with Clemsons KK Chapter
(Kappa Beta) prior to the UVa-Clemson football game in November,
and had a wonderful time together! From going to Qdoba for noms to
singing the Fraternity Hymn by the Rotunda to playing Cards Against
Humanity at a band house, everyone in attendance had a wonderful
time.
This semester, we have been busy with special projects in
addition to welcom- ing in our Omega Class of Membership
Candidates! A few Brothers (including my- self) went to the Southern
Precinct Meeting at Christopher Newport University along with the
Northeast District Convention at the University of Connecticut, where
we learned how to become better Brothers and how to more
effectively serve the CMB. We also planned and successfully hosted
our First Annual Spring Gala at the Doubletree Hotel complete with a
menu comparable to that of the annual CMB Band Banquet (aka
Band Prom). In addition, we have had fun with an MC planned
events such as a Murder Mystery Night, cleaning sousaphones per
our sponsor Mr. Costons request, and baking treats for a bake sale
fundraiser.
Brotherhood has never been stronger in Beta Chi, but we are
continuing to strive to strengthen these bonds as much as possible
through various social and ser- vice projects. We are also excited to
keep finding new social and service events with our lovely Sisters in
Iota Kappa! This year was a great one for both of our organiza- tions,
and I am truly excited to see what the coming year has in store for the
chap- ters of KK and TB here at the Univer- sity of Virginia.

The Integration of
Our Zetalicious Zetas
Last year at Precincts, the NED officers warned us of the
difficulties of integrating a large class into our very small chapter, but
in the Spring 2013 we welcomed 9 sisters into our then, 7 person
chapter. The Deltas and Epsilons were concerned with the idea of
more than doubling our chapters size and we knew some things
would have to change. However, we also knew that a significant
increase in size was necessary in order for our chapter to better serve
the band.
Im pleased to say that at this years Southern Precinct meeting, I
had nothing but positive words to say about the growth of our chapter.
The Zetas have taken on prominent leadership positions and have
demonstrated their ability to be influential members of our sorority.
Our larger size has allowed us to take on bigger projects, to set more
ambitious goals for the future, and to better serve our band.
As the Zeta Class VPM, Im so proud of the work these girls
have done this year and Ive loved watching them flourish as sisters. I
cant wait to see where they take this sorority as they assume further
leadership positions in the coming Spring 2014 elections.

A Sister for Ere Long:
Strengthening the Bond Between
Active Members and Alumni
I cannot believe that just a year ago I was still an MC. I was anxiously awaiting
the day I would officially became a sister. That day came and it is one of the best
memories I have! After third degree, though, I wasnt sure what the next step would be
for me. I was nominated for a few officer positions, but I kept asking myself, are you
ready to be an officer? I just became a sister, and now people think I can hold a position
the following year?
I went for it and the following week I became the Alumni Secretary of Iota Kappa
for 2013- 2014. In the fall, I worked to combine some new ideas with the traditions
started by the previous alumni secretaries. Our chapter continued to write hand written
notes to a different alumnus each week. Also, the alumni continue to receive a
bimonthly newsletter. In the spring semester, I plan to have each MC paired with an
alumni pen pal to further strengthen the bond. Something new to our band this past year
was Alumni Day because it was the tenth anniversary for the Cavalier Marching Band.
Alumni were asked to come back and there were at least five sisters that got to perform
with the band. After every game, we sang the hymn, and after this game in particular,
we sung on the field. I stood beside a founding mother and I feel this was the most
connected our active members and alumni have ever felt.
Being a small, fairly new chapter has its benefits when connecting with the
alumni. Our fourth year Deltas knew a lot of the sisters, so it made it easier to connect
with most of them. I think the alumni really enjoy receiving the letters and the chapter
got a thank you note from one of them! Another alumnus joined us at a chapter meeting
after practice and one even sent us a care package during finals week. Hopefully
