Act One
Scene One

(Lights up on Kim, sitting with a notebook in her lap, reading aloud.)

KIM:
I have come to a realization today. An inevitable realization something that was always in the
back of my mind, something I always knew, but chose to deny, for honorable and sensible reasons.
(Angela enters, and sits down beside Kim. Kim closes the notebook, and begins speaking to her, as
though nothing has changed.) Because of my sense of right and wrong, because of common sense,
because of my belief in karma. But it has become unavoidable. In one day I have gone from willful
and blissful ignorance to a wretched awareness... Oh, Shane...

ANGELA:
Oh, Shane? Yeah, hes a really nice guy. His girlfriend, though

KIM:
(With venom.) Sandra.

ANGELA:
Sandra. Yeah, shes...

KIM:
Spiteful? Vicious? Vapid? Hateful?

ANGELA:
...I was going to say kind of a bitch, but... (Beat.) You okay, Kim?

KIM:
Yeah, I... I just... love him.

ANGELA:
Oh.

KIM:
And hes dating a pushy, shallow, self-absorbed incarnation of pure evil.

ANGELA:
Oh.

KIM:
I dont know what to do, Angela! (Standing.)

ANGELA:
I dont know if theres anything you can do...

KIM:
Youre right.

ANGELA:
I mean, for whatever reason

KIM:
He loves her.

ANGELA:
Hes with her... for now, anyway. So I guess youve got to just bide your time.

KIM:
(Thinks a minute, then begins to write furiously.) The cross I bear, Ill learn to love. The one I love,
Ill live without.

(Blackout.)

Scene Two

(Lights up on Kim, again alone with her notebook.)

KIM:
Oh Shane Theres nothing I can do but wait, on pins and needles, until you see that she isnt right
for you, that you deserve better, that you deserve me (Shane enters, sees her, and creeps up
behind her.) Youll come to me, and say

SHANE:
Kim! (Kim jumps up with a shriek.) Oh, that was fun!

KIM:
You scared me!

SHANE:
Someday youll use that! (Points to the notebook.)

KIM:
(Subtext.) Youre probably right.

SHANE:
So whats up? Whatre you working on?

KIM:
Something new. Its called Unrequited.

SHANE:
Lord, Kim... Can I give you a piece of advice?

KIM:
If I said no, would it do me any good?

SHANE:
No. And this is it: When you love someone, they should be the first to know.

KIM:
(Subtext.) Do you really believe that?

SHANE:
Its my number one rule for life. That, and never date someone who wont let you see them naked.

KIM:
(Suddenly her inner monologue seems ridiculous, and she laughs.) Ill try to remember that one.

SHANE:
(Out of left wing.) Kim, are you all right?

KIM:
Yeah, Shane Just tired. Why, do I look it?

SHANE:
(Steps back, and looks at her sideways.) No, actually... You look... like youre glowing.

KIM:
(Tearing up.) I... I dont know what to say.

SHANE:
Whats wrong?

KIM:
I cant. I cant, I cant...

SHANE:
Its okay, its okay... Shhhh... (Pulls Kim into a hug.) Cmon, Ill take you home.

KIM:
I... Shane...?

SHANE:
Yes?

KIM:
... Thank you.

(Blackout.)

Scene Three

(Lights up on Angela, and Kim. Angela is trying to calm down Kim, as she paces back and forth.)

KIM:
What would you do if Luke was with someone other than you?

ANGELA:
Kim I dont know how to answer that. But I have been in your shoes, and I know it isnt easy. But if
some other guy came along right now, and told me he loved me, I wouldnt know how to deal with
that, either. Even if there was a chance of us working out, I wouldnt leave Luke for just a chance
of something better. It wouldnt be fair to him. I would only be able to ask that other person to let
my relationship with Luke run its course.

KIM:
I dont think I can talk to you anymore. Youre too rational!

ANGELA:
(Taken aback.) Im sorry.

KIM:
Its not your fault. Youre not a gambler-by-nature, I understand.

ANGELA:
...Okay, now, suddenly, I dont want to talk to you anymore either.

KIM:
Im going to go home and eat chocolate and watch Saved by the Bell.

ANGELA:
Good plan.

KIM:
Thats not the plan. The plan, is: (Tiredly, she recites) The cross I bear, Ill learn to love

ANGELA:
(Finishes, almost absent-mindedly.) The one I love, Ill live without.

KIM:
Later, Angel. (Exits.)

ANGELA:
Bye, Kim.

(Brian enters.)

BRIAN:
Angela! Ive been looking for you! I have News!

ANGELA:
Really?

BRIAN:
Debbie and I made it official last night. I asked, and she said Yes.

ANGELA:
Oh, Brian! Thats great! (She hugs him.)

BRIAN:
Thank you so much, Angela. Youve been such a big part of this. I mean, you introduced us and
everything, that night after Oedipus.

ANGELA:
It was nothing.

BRIAN:
(Jokingly scolding.) Cmon, admit it, I know you had a hand in this.

ANGELA:
(Smiling.) I guess... Maybe I did... (Beat.) Youre welcome.

BRIAN:
Angela, youre the best.

ANGELA:
(Long moment. Beat change.) Treat her well, Brian.

BRIAN:
(Serious.) You know I will. (They hug again. Blackout.)

Scene Four

(Lights up on Angela and Debbie, sitting together. Angela tries to start a conversation.)

ANGELA:
So, are you taking Brian to Prom?

DEBBIE:
Yeah.

ANGELA:
Its kind of funny, isnt it? Last year you were a sophomore, there with a junior, this year youre a
junior, there with a sophomore

DEBBIE:
Yeah.

ANGELA:
Brians a really great guy.

DEBBIE:
Yeah.

ANGELA:
Did I ever tell you about the time during Oedipus when?

DEBBIE:
Yeah.

ANGELA:
So whats your dress like?

DEBBIE:
(Suddenly, Debbies eyes light up, and she speaks, excitedly.) My moms making it. Its sort of a
golden mauve, sleeveless, with a long train, and little wrap-type-thing

ANGELA:
That sounds nice.

DEBBIE:
(Moans in ecstasy.) Ohhhhhgggghhhhhhhhh...

ANGELA:
Do you need a minute?

(Enter Ryan.)

RYAN:

DEBBIE:
Angela, Ryan, Ryan, Angela.

ANGELA:
I know.

RYAN:
Debbie

DEBBIE:
Ryan?

ANGELA:
Angela. (They glare at her.) Sorry. I was feeling left out.

DEBBIE:
Angela, Ill see you later. (Debbie and Ryan leave. A few seconds later, Brian runs on.)

BRIAN:
Angela

ANGELA:
Dont start that again.

BRIAN:
What?

ANGELA:
Never mind. Whats up?

BRIAN:
Did you see Debbie?

ANGELA:
Yeah, she and Ryan just left.

BRIAN:
Where did they go?

ANGELA:
I dont know (Pointing.) Over there? (Brian begins freaking out.) Brian, whats wrong?

BRIAN:
GAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

ANGELA:
(Visibly moved.) Itll be all right. I dont even know whats wrong, but I promise. Itll be okay.

BRIAN:
(Feeling defeated, he looks up at Angela.) I dont know what to say.

ANGELA:
Whats going on?

BRIAN:
Ryan He Debbie

ANGELA:
Brian, calm down. Im sure its nothing.

BRIAN:
Its not nothing! He thinks hes in love with her. Son of a bitch! He says he has no choice but to
fight me for her! (Beat.) He was my best friend, Angela. He cant do this to me.

ANGELA:
Brian Shes with you. Shes made her choice. No matter what he says or does, she is with you.

BRIAN:
How do you know that?

ANGELA:
I just know, Brian. You dont leave a perfectly good relationship on blind faith!

BRIAN:
I dont. You dont. But Debbie? Who knows?

ANGELA:
Brian, please. Calm down. Leave it alone. You have to trust her, otherwise (Beat.) Do you love
her?

BRIAN:
(Pause.) Yes.

ANGELA:
If you love something, set it free, right? And if it comes back to you, then its yours, for life. If it
doesnt, then it never was.

BRIAN:
(Head in hands.) Its not that simple.

ANGELA:
Nothing ever is. (Beat.) Im sorry. Im not qualified to counsel you. I cant help you, I cant help
anyone. (She takes a shaky breath.)

BRIAN:
Angela? What?

ANGELA:
(Shakes her head.) I dont know what to say. (Blackout.)

Scene Five

(Lights up on Angela standing in the center of the stage, with Kim and Debbie on opposite sides. Kim
and Debbie do not interact with each other in the following scene.)

KIM and DEBBIE:

Angela, I dont know what to do!

KIM:
I love him.

DEBBIE:
He says he loves me! He wont leave me alone.

ANGELA:
Ryan?

DEBBIE:
Both of them!

ANGELA:
Who do you love?

DEBBIE:
I dont know! Neither of them. I I like Brian but its all happening so fast.

KIM:
I dont know how much longer I can wait!

ANGELA:
Maybe youd feel better if you told him.

DEBBIE:
Told him what?

KIM:
What? I thought you told me to wait!

ANGELA:
Dont listen to me. I dont know what Im saying! I cant help you!

DEBBIE:
Wait, told him what?

ANGELA:
...Anything!

KIM and DEBBIE:

What would you do if you were me?

ANGELA:
Im not you!
13

Purchased by Marisa Rebelo, marisarebelo97@gmail.com #9431323

KIM and DEBBIE:
But if you were?

ANGELA:
Id stay with Brian! Tell him theres nothing between you and Ryan, and the only reason that youve
been acting funny and distant is because youre nervous, and things are moving too fast for you.
Because he loves you! And sooner or later, I hope you learn to appreciate that! (Turns.) I think you
should consider telling him how you feel, but in a way that respects hes in a relationship that he
may not want to disrupt. Make sure you understand that nothing may change but you might feel
better with it out in the open. Might. I cannot emphasize the might enough. And whether or not the
aforementioned advice proves to be good or bad, DO NOT COME BACK AND ASK FOR MORE. I cant
help you, Kim. I cant even help MYSELF!

KIM:
I need (Struggles to find words, gives up.) I dont know what I need

DEBBIE:
I want (Struggles to find words, gives up.) I dont know what I want

ANGELA:
(Head in hands.) I dont know. I dont know. I dont know.

Scene Six

(Lights up on Shane. Kim enters from the opposite side of the stage.)

KIM:
Hey, Shane.

SHANE:
Hey, Kim.

KIM:
Listen, Shane... I want to tell you something. Maybe its not fair maybe its not the right thing
to do because youre with Sandra And I can accept that I can even respect that But you know
that I have feelings for you. And I think I would be better for you, to you, than she has been
Shane, you just dont know whats good for you.

SHANE:
Just because I dont act doesnt mean I dont know. Maybe Im an emotional masochist, I dont
know. But you and I would never work And Sandra and I it works. Maybe you cant understand
it

KIM:
No I think I do. Im going to go.

SHANE:
Yeah, okay.

KIM:
Goodbye.

Scene Seven

(Lights up on Angela, standing center stage. As each character has their first line, they enter from
one side or the other.)

ANGELA:
Maybe Ryan was right. Who am I to judge?

RYAN:
You cant understand how this feels.

DEBBIE:
Ryans going out with Natalie! She asked him out yesterday!

ANGELA:
What? I definitely dont understand that!

KIM:
I told him.

ANGELA:
And? What happened?

KIM:
Nothings changed. The cross I bear

ANGELA:
Ill learn to love.

KIM:
The one I love

ANGELA:
Ill live without.

KIM:
Maybe you were right. Maybe people just arent supposed to gamble; throw one person away for
the next. I think Im starting to understand... When you love someone, they should be the first to
know... but... The truth hurts. The answers we find are never what we had in mind.

RYAN:
Dont think what you said... changed how I feel about Debbie. Because, youd be wrong. Natalies
nice. And she wants me. And thats enough, for now. Until Debbie and Brian...

ANGELA:
So nothings changed?

BRIAN:
I wouldnt say that.

DEBBIE:
Now he has to leave me alone, dont you see?

Act Two
Scene One

(Lights up on Angela, Jamie, and Debbie, gathered on the floor of Debbies living room. Angela is
devouring the script she holds in her hands, and nibbling popcorn from a central bowl, occasionally.
Jamie and Debbie chatter, eat, and sip beverages.)

DEBBIE:
So, overall, how was it?

JAMIE:
Its an experience. Living in the dorms, with a stranger for a roommate and mine was psychotic
But the classes are decent, and I like my job a lot.

DEBBIE:
The lighting thing?

JAMIE:
Yeah. The lighting thing. I think Im going to change my major to Lighting when I go back in
September.

DEBBIE:
I thought you were always going to direct!

JAMIE:
Ill still direct

DEBBIE:
Good, because you know I wont act for anyone else.

JAMIE:
(Frowns.) I dont endorse that decision, Debbie (Reconsiders, smiles.) Even though it is an ego
trip.

DEBBIE:
Damn straight. I grace you alone with my talent, Jamie.

JAMIE:
(Smiles.) And I appreciate it.

DEBBIE:
(Looking at Angela.) So, Ang, am I going to like my character? (Angela ignores her.)

ANGELA:
You know

DEBBIE:
No I dont

ANGELA:
Well neither do I. Your character though She makes out with Carter.

DEBBIE:
Carter? Thats Alexs character, right?

ANGELA:
(Incredulous.) Yes, Debbie. Alex is Carter. And you neck with him. Onstage.

JAMIE:
Thats right. I figured you could handle it, you have plenty of time to get to know him before hell
have his hand up your shirt.

DEBBIE:
No problem, its all in the name of Theatre, right? So there you go.

ANGELA:
(Laughing, then cautiously.) I wonder if thats how Brian will see it.

DEBBIE:
He will

ANGELA:
Its really kinda funny he really wanted to be Carter.

DEBBIE:
Alex?

ANGELA:
No, Brian. Well, actually, both of them, I guess Brians pretty broken up about not getting a part.

JAMIE:
Yeah, I am too. It was a tough decision, believe me.

ANGELA:
Hey, Im just glad I got in. (Joking.) I know its because Im friends with the director.

ANGELA:
Yeah, yeah So, James, do you ever still talk to Seth?

JAMIE:
Thankfully, no, its a big campus. But in that same vein, I hear Luke is still following you around like
a lost puppy.

ANGELA:
Yeah he did for a while... Now hes like a ghost. I actually feel better than I expected to. I feel
over him.

DEBBIE:
About time. We need to get you a real man.

ANGELA:
(Joking. Sarcastic.) Oh, you mean like Brian?

DEBBIE:
No more like well, maybe Alex? (To Jamie.) Whats his deal?

JAMIE:
Well, he was in my class but after graduation he started working instead of going to college. He
was fired about a month ago He was renting the basement of his parents house, until his mother
kicked him out last week.

ANGELA:
So no job, no school, and homeless?

JAMIE:
Yeah. So?

ANGELA:
Well hes certifiably cute, but so is Ryan, and you dont see me going after him.

DEBBIE:
Hes fifteen.

ANGELA:
(Joking.) And in love with you. (She waits for Debbie to argue with this, but she doesnt. Angelas
tone changes.) And dating Natalie. Are he and Brian on speaking terms yet?

DEBBIE:
Who can keep track? I think Ryans speaking to Brian, but Brians not speaking to Ryan. (Her mind
catches up with her mouth.) Haha, that rhymed. (Angela gives her an incredulous look.) Im
speaking to both of them.

JAMIE:
I would hope so. Ones your co-star and the others your boyfriend.

ANGELA:
My point is oh, I have no point. Something about emotional investment in the inherently unstable

20

Purchased by Marisa Rebelo, marisarebelo97@gmail.com #9431323

DEBBIE:
So dont emotionally invest. You just got out of a relationship. Maybe another one isnt what you
need. Have a fling.

ANGELA:
Ill think about it You do always seem to know whats best for me better than I do

DEBBIE:
All right. Dont think too much.

Scene Two

(Jamies very first line is spoken in darkness. Once the lights come up, we see Jamie, Angela,
Debbie, Brian, Ryan, and Alex. They are all sprawled on the ground, in the park, the place for their
rehearsals. Everyone but Brian has a script.)

JAMIE:
Wow, guys, that was really amazing. (The lights come up, and as they do, the actors close their
scripts, triumphantly, happy their first rehearsal is over, proud of their read-through performances.)
Remember, we only have two weeks, so call is an hour earlier tomorrow. I want to stumble through
all the blocking, so everyone be on time. Same place. (She pauses.) Youre dismissed. Fly and be
free.

ALEX:
Jamie? Can we buy cheese and bread and make grilled cheese sandwiches at your place?

JAMIE:
(Somewhat puzzled, but she decides not to question him.) Sure

ALEX:
And vodka?

JAMIE:
If you can get some, I approve.

ALEX:
(Confidently.) I know people.

JAMIE:
(Laughs. This is their inside joke.) He knows people. (Laughs some more.)

ALEX:
The rest of you, come too. Vodka and charred cheese sandwiches for all.

(Brian pulls Debbie aside, and they argue quietly for a moment, under the other dialogue.)

RYAN:
My moms going to be here any second to pick me up.

(Chorus of Aw)

ANGELA:
I keep forgetting how young you are.

BRIAN:
Thanks. (He takes several steps away from Debbie, facing the parking lot.)

DEBBIE:
Jamie, do you have a cigarette?

JAMIE:
(Handing Debbie a cigarette from her purse.) Can we head out?

ALEX:
To Troy, we march! (Debbie laughs, Jamie looks puzzled, and they begin to walk towards their
cars.)

ANGELA:
(To Brian, with caution, once Debbie is gone.) Everything okay?

BRIAN:
(Acting.) Yeah. Fine. Can we go?

scripts. Alex and Debbie have quickly developed a visible comfortableness with each other.)

ALEX:
This little thing [Debbie] can really put away the drink.

DEBBIE:
(Joking.) One of my many talents.

JAMIE:
There were a couple times, Id get up and one of them would be lying outside in the grass, and Id
be like, Cmon, back inside, cmon Drunk people are pretty much like small children, only
possibly less articulate.

ANGELA:
Sorry I missed it.

JAMIE:
Yeah we had a time.

DEBBIE:
We did. We had a time.

ALEX:
(To Angela.) You drink?

ANGELA:
Um well, I dont not drink Know what I mean?

ALEX:
Waiting to be corrupted?

ANGELA:
(Taken aback, but fighting not to show it.) Something like that.

(Then Ryan comes in.)

ALEX:
Hey, its Ryan! Hi, Ryan! Ryan, next time, you should come drinking with us, Ryan.

RYAN:
Ill see what I can do.

(To Angela.) You okay?

ANGELA:
(Same tone.) Yes and no.

BRIAN:
(Has other things on his mind.) Debbie, can I talk to you elsewhere for a minute?

DEBBIE:
(Sarcasm. Soldier marching to her death.) Sure. (They go. There is a long silence between Alex and
Angela.)

ALEX:
Listen, if I implied anything I-

ANGELA:
Forget it. That is irrelevant.

ALEX:
Well what is relevant?

ANGELA:
Can we not talk? (Jamie enters.) Jamie. We need to talk.

ALEX:
Dont mind me. Ill just be going to get some smokes.

JAMIE:
Um?

ANGELA:
(Talking fast, babbling.) I need to ask you something, but if I do, youll know something, and all I
want is to figure out if you do already, but if you dont already, and I ask you if you know, you
wont have known, but you will then know.

JAMIE:
Is this about you and Alex making out in my living room last night?

ANGELA:
Not really, but sort of. Indirectly. Yes and no.

JAMIE:
Well, what does it have to do with, directly?

ANGELA:
Cruelty. Betrayal. The heartbreak of an innocent and decent guy.

JAMIE:
Angela, I have a policy. Live and let live. Let other people make their own mistakes, its not for me
to judge. When I saw Debbie and Alex making out, I didnt intervene. It was not my place. And it
isnt yours either. Dont get involved.

ANGELA:
Jamie I already am. I helped set them up in the first place! I I went to him, I barely knew him
back then, and I said, Treat her right.

JAMIE:
I do not follow.

ANGELA:
Or lead! (Jamie doesnt respond.) Jamie, I am responsible for this. I am responsible for the pain
that she will cause him.

JAMIE:
(Shrugs.) Everything causes pain. Living is pain. Hell get over it.

ANGELA:
(Looks accusingly, as though she is the one who has been betrayed.) God, Jamie, I expected you of
all people to understand!

JAMIE:
I understand that you are hung over. I understand that you feel more pain for people than they feel
for themselves. I understand that Ryan is really, really late. Im sending you home. Well work the
Alex-Debbie necking scene tonight instead.

ANGELA:
Oh, fucking fantastic!

Scene Five

(Later that night. Angelas first line is spoken in darkness. Angela and Ryan are sitting on a
fencepost by the parking lot. We are to assume that Angela never left and Ryan eventually arrived,
but too late.)

ANGELA:
Things are so amazingly fucked-up right now. (Lights up.) I mean, Debbie and Brian were already
not doing well because of well, you. (Beat.) The logic escapes me, she feels like he doesnt trust
her, like hes waiting for her to cheat so she does. Instead of saying, Brian, I dont feel like you
trust me, she hooks up with Alex! What THE HELL is THAT? People are fucking INSANE! I I feel
inextricably linked to the whole mess, because I wanted them to be together, to work out, to stay
together I end up sharing Alex The Walking Bag of Disease with her. I Shes the one who basically
told me to have a fling, anyway. I guess she decided to take her own advice. She For once she
didnt know what I needed, she knew what she wanted. (Beat. Quietly.) That seems really ironic
but I cant I cant exactly figure out why (Beat, talking fast again.) I feel responsible for this.
How else am I supposed to feel? (Beat.) Jamie was right. I need to stop feeling peoples pain for
them, trying to step between my friends and their scars.

RYAN:
I dont think its such a bad thing to want to prevent pain, but you have to realize your limits. Your
instinct is good, but in practice, its just impractical.

ANGELA:
Ryan, that was the most intelligent perspective Ive heard all night. And comforting, too. Huh.
(Beat. Joking with him.) So are you still in love with Debbie, your best friends girlfriend, and dating
Natalie, who, quite frankly, you little punk, deserves to have a boyfriend whos in love with her?

RYAN:
And it gets worse.

ANGELA:
Youre kidding.

RYAN:
No. Before school let out, I kissed Nancy.

ANGELA:
Nancy Manzanar?

RYAN:
Yes.

ANGELA:
That little tramp?

RYAN:
Yes

ANGELA:
Oh, my, God, Ryan. You need to give yourself some insightful advice.

ANGELA:
(Thinly masked sarcasm.) I never thought about it like that before. (Sighs.) Im going to have to
apologize to Jamie tomorrow.

RYAN:
Shell forgive you.

ANGELA:
You think?

RYAN:
Oh, yeah. I mean, you guys have been friends for years, right? Plus, theres no understudy.

ANGELA:
(Laughs a little, then looks at him, puzzled and pleased.) Ryan, when and if you grow up, you have
a lot of potential of becoming one of those rare good men, Im always hearing about.

RYAN:
(Pauses a moment.) Im going to take that as a compliment.

Scene Six

(Lights up on the post-show cast party. The show has come and gone, and only the unanswered
questions remain. Angela and Debbie sit, center stage, talking, a lot more calmly than last time.)

ANGELA:
I guess what Im trying to say is that I was being a total hypocrite. I mean, who am I to judge,
right? Im really sorry, Deb.

DEBBIE:
Its okay. I mean, really, you were just trying to look out for Brian. And me.

ANGELA:
I guess I think theres probably more to it Debbie, its not always easy to have a friend like you.
Sometimes I look at you and all I see is everything Im not. I mean, next to you, I dont stand a
chance with any guy. Maybe you were right, maybe I was angry about Alex, too.

DEBBIE:
Angela, you dont know how much I envy you. I may attract guys but when I do, I never know if
its me they like, or what they think I am. (Pause. Beat.) Brian and I broke up. (Beat.) Surprise!

ANGELA:
Oh, Deb, Im sorry.

DEBBIE:
Me, too. (Pause.) I dont think this was about Alex, though. Hes not the one youve been looking at
with that little face

ANGELA:
What are you talking about? (Beat.) What little face?

DEBBIE:
(Imitates Angela, head titled to one side, she looks up through her eyelashes, adoring and tragic.)
That little face. (Looks normal again.) I have the solution, Angela. I give you my blessing. You can
go after him, now.

ANGELA:
Im confused.

DEBBIE:
Yeah, I was too, and then I realized who you wanted all along. You thought what you needed was
what I wanted.

ANGELA:
(That last part sounded familiar, but Angela is still confused.) Mind filling me in?

DEBBIE:
Youre going to have to deal with it sooner or later, sweetie. (She hugs Angela tightly.) Yknow,
even though we werent on speaking terms, it was a pleasure to work with you, Angela.

ANGELA:
Yeah Im really sorry its over.

DEBBIE:
(Raising her eyebrows, looking away.) Im not. Having to kiss Alex night after night and hes really
just awful.

ANGELA:
(Laughing.) Yeah. I know. (They both laugh.)

DEBBIE:
Aite, well, call me, Angela. (Starts to leave.)

ANGELA:
Dont be a stranger. (Laughs to herself as Debbie exits. She sits, alone, looking pensive. Then Brian
enters.)

BRIAN:
Hey.

ANGELA:
Hey. (Beat. Realization/epiphany/paradigm shift.) HEY!

BRIAN:
What?

ANGELA:
Nothing. Um I heard about you and Deb.

BRIAN:
From Ryan, or Alex?

ANGELA:
(Raises one eyebrow.) From Deb. (Pause.) Why?

BRIAN:
(Wide grin.) I told them both. Big smile, Debbie and I have broken up. Not that our being together
ever stopped either one of you.

ANGELA:
(Smiles ruefully.) You are a mean, non-communicative, selfish bastard. And I think Im falling for
you.

BRIAN:
What?

ANGELA:
Let me finish! (Deep breath.) I have feelings for you. Not just, like, strange, uncontrollable physical
attraction, although, I feel that I have since we were in Oedipus together, since before I even
broke up with Luke. And not just that bizarre combination of admiration and fascination that keeps
you on my permanent good side no matter how drastically you cross the line or how much of a little
whiny bitch you can sometimes be although, obviously, I feel that. And not just that totally
annoying and inescapable feeling that I want to take care of you, because I made you promise to
treat her right, and I shouldve made her make that same promise, so youd never have to feel the
kind of pain I feel when I see her let you down even though I feel that, too. Its all those things,

and its more, more than I can ever put into words. (Beat.) Listen, dont say anything. Because you
need to spend some time on your own, be alone for a while, and youre going to need time to let all
that sink in. (Beat.) Im going to need time to let all that sink in. (Beat.) But if the time ever comes
in your life, when youre ready to step back up to the metaphorical plate, please consider me. Ill
be here. Ill be waiting.

BRIAN:
(Brian looks at her, at first amazed and puzzled, then touched.) Well, that seems like a reasonable
request.

(A few moments pass in silence, as they avoid looking at each other.)

ANGELA:
So are we cool?

BRIAN:
(Risking a joke.) Well, youre cool and Im a whiny little bitch.

ANGELA:
(Shoves him a little.) You know what I mean.

BRIAN:
(Smiles at her.) Yeah. I know. And, yeah. We are. (They look at each other, and smile.)

(Black out.)

BRIAN:

ANGELA:

Act Three
Scene One

(Lights up on Kim and Shane, alone onstage, each holding scripts in their hands, but not looking at
them.)

KIM:
So you expect me to rearrange my entire life for you?

SHANE:
Youre totally over-reacting-

KIM:
Oh, of course I am! Because its much easier to deal with me when you can treat me like a child! SO
what if Im angry? So what if Im hurt? You can chock it all up to my juvenile issues and then you
dont have to ask yourself why youre with me when I mean nothing to you!

SHANE:
My line, whatever it is

ANGELA:
(Erupting with laughter from the front row.) That was really, really great, Kim. Shane, if you were
wondering, your line is, If youve already made up your mind

SHANE:
Then I guess theres nothing left to say. Right.

ANGELA:
Lets stop here for tonight.

KIM:
Oh, hey, I wanted to tell you that Im going to be a little bit late tomorrow night.

ANGELA:
Thats fine, were starting with Shane and Debbie tomorrow. So, Shane? You might want to get your
script in order

SHANE:
Sure thing.

KIM:
(To Angela.) So, you want to catch a movie tonight?

ANGELA:

ANGELA:
Yeah, Ive been leaving her messages I kind of got a vibe that she wasnt thrilled about her role.

SHANE:
Arent all the parts the same size?

ANGELA:
Yeah, so I dont think its that.

KIM:
Well, maybe she thinks you typecast her.

ANGELA:
Well, if I typecast her, then I typecast all of you.

SHANE:
Well, then what do you think it is?

ANGELA:
My only thought is that shes mad because she and Ryan are paired together.

KIM:
Well, so is Jamie. Im the only one who isnt paired up with him.

SHANE:
Wait, did they break up?

ANGELA:
No, they just have a very bizarre relationship.

SHANE:
Bizarre as in?

ANGELA:
Well, you know Theyre very different people. Hes an outdoor type, and she I dont think she

ANGELA:
(Psyched.) Kim is amazing me. She is just living and breathing her role, you know?

BRIAN:
(Smiling.) Your face Youre like a small child when you get excited.

ANGELA:
What can I say? I thought Id be a total failure at this. Instead, I have six actors in roles that they
are perfect for.

BRIAN:
Kim as an introspective romantic.

ANGELA:
Shane as an aloof cynic.

BRIAN:
Ryan as a co-dependent basketcase.

ANGELA:
Debbie as a squelched-

BRIAN:
Squelched?

ANGELA:
Its a word.

BRIAN:
Sure it is.

ANGELA:
Ahem. Debbie as a squelched masochist, Jamie as an independent thrill-seeker

BRIAN:
And me, as a whiny little bitch.

ANGELA:
More like, paranoid, confused, and tortured idealist.

(Pause.) You can handle it, right?

ANGELA:
I dont know Im expecting yelling and screeching and conflicts, and

BRIAN:
For the real drama to be backstage?

ANGELA:

BRIAN:

ANGELA:
I just dont want to be swept up in everyone elses problems.

BRIAN:
What problems? Kims infatuation with Shane is past tense. Ryan finally has the girl he wanted all
along.

ANGELA:
Except not at all

BRIAN:
And Debbie? Well, Debbies an Ice Queen.

ANGELA:
Youre still angry at her.

BRIAN:

KIM:
So this is your idea of a fun evening out? Waiting in a park for the late showing of a movie so that
you can save two bucks?

SHANE:
Come on. We have everything necessary for juvenile hi-jinx. We have our youth, and our freedom
and I think I have a Frisbee in my car

KIM:
Thats what I like about you, Shane. Youre so resourceful.

SHANE:
See? Youre having a great time insulting me.

KIM:
Its what you do best. Take abuse from girls.

SHANE:
That was kind of harsh. Youd better be careful, or I wont ask you out again.

KIM:
Is that what you did?

SHANE:
Well, yeah. What did you expect, an engraved invitation?

KIM:
No. I wouldnt expect you, of all people, to ask me out. I have too many issues, remember?

SHANE:
I never said that exactly Besides, that was more than a year ago, it doesnt matter now.

KIM:
Oh, so I grew up?

SHANE:
In a manner of speaking Sure.

KIM:
What are you saying here?

SHANE:
Im saying, I feel differently about you than I did a year ago.

KIM:

I want you now?

KIM:
Say that again.

SHANE:

Scene Four

(Lights up on Jamie and Ryan onstage, scripts in hand. Angela back in her chair in the house.)

JAMIE:
I thought that we talked about this. You dont want me to be your girlfriend. You dont want a
girlfriend. You only think you do. You only think you do because its what youve been taught is
right. You know my position on this. Im not like you. I dont feel compelled to tie a rock to my leg
and jump off a cliff. Its nothing personal. You seem like a great guy. But a relationship? Why? We
have everything we need, right now. Affection, conversation, sex, and the only kind of devotion
that lasts: were friends. Why would you want to trade that for a hollow sense of security? For some
kind of false guarantee? Love is brief. In a couple of months, well get bored with each other, and
well drift apart. No mess, no bullshit. Look, I just dont want us to lie to ourselves, or to each
other. The minute Im your girlfriend, we stop being people to each other and start being
obligations. And, I love you too much to let that happen.

RYAN:
Well, Im sorry, but I dont think I am that different, I dont think I can be like you.

JAMIE:
Im sorry you feel that way, but Im not going to lie to you.

RYAN:
No, Im the one whos sorry. Im sorry Ive been wasting my time.

(Angela applauds.)

ANGELA:
Very nice, both of you. Right now the blockings really static though, and Im not sure its working.
Well probably see what we can do to make it more dynamic the next time we meet.

RYAN:
Angela, are we doing my scene with Debbie today?

ANGELA:
Yeah, she told me shed be here right after work.

RYAN:
I Im having a hard time figuring out whats going on.

ANGELA:
Well okay. Have you ever kept up a pretense?

RYAN:
What?

ANGELA:
Ill bet you have, you just didnt know what it was called. Did you ever pretend you didnt know
something when you actually did?

ANGELA:
Yes, remarkably like that. In this scene, you know that she has cheated on you, but you dont want
to say anything. She knows that you know, but she well, she doesnt care. Shes just waiting for
you to break up with her. Youre waiting for her to break down in tears and confess and beg
forgiveness Youre very much in denial.

RYAN:
She doesnt love me?

ANGELA:
No.

RYAN:
Then, why doesnt she break up with me?

ANGELA:
Well, thats a complicated question. Well ask Debbie when she gets here. (Ryan looks shocked, and
starts to leave.) Because its her character! She gets to tell us because its her character! RYAN!

JAMIE:
What the hell?

ANGELA:
Drama Behind the Scenes.

JAMIE:
Should I go chase him down?

ANGELA:
No, no. Hell come back.

JAMIE:
Not exactly what you had in mind for your rehearsals, huh?

ANGELA:
Eh. I saw this coming. Living a soap opera kind of comes with the territory. (Looking at Jamie.)
Please tell me that its not this bad in college.

JAMIE:
Depends on where you go, who you hang out with. Tight-knit groups have history, conflicts, drama.
The only way to escape it all is to become a floater, and you dont strike me as one. You enjoy
taking care of people too much.

ANGELA:
I dont know. Trying to take care of people is what always gets me.

worry, and youll still be there to comfort them

Kim Im probably the wrong person to give relationship advice. I had a crush on my current
boyfriend for six months before I even realized it

KIM:
That makes you the perfect person to ask. For example Do you ever feel like you let Brian call all

yourself that hes what you always wanted?

ANGELA:

BRIAN:

ANGELA:
Do you ever think that problems dont get resolved, they just change?

BRIAN:
Whats wrong?

ANGELA:
Well Ryan is apparently threatening suicide to keep Debbie on a short leash, and Shanes done a
180 regarding Kim.

BRIAN:
(Sighs.) The Drama Behind the Scenes. Isnt it funny? Our lives make up a much more interesting
than anything that could be written, anything that the audience sees. Listen, Angela, maybe you
just have to accept the fact that you cant fix people. And there are no easy answers or deus-ex-
machina endings. And no one ever gets exactly what they want. They just Learn to want less, and
less and less

ANGELA:
(Who has been watching him speak, and growing more serious.) Did I ever tell you about my
insomnia?

BRIAN:
What? No

ANGELA:
I used to have horrible insomnia. For years And I used to play all these games, you know, in my
head, to try to relax and get to sleep Like, I would count how long I could keep my eyes open. And
then I would count how long I could keep them closed And one night, after Luke and I broke up, I
set my mind to trying to imagine the perfect guy. I did that for a really long time, until I had it
down to microscopic detail, I knew exactly, precisely what I wanted. And then Deb she knew it
before I did. She made me realize it was you. (Beat.) I stayed with my first boyfriend too long,
because I was terrified of being alone again, and because I didnt know that I deserved better. And
then, when I finally broke up with him, being alone was scary, but I got through that. I even started
to like it. I found out I was pretty good at being alone. I found out that I was stronger than I ever
thought I could be. And I just want you to know that I like you, and I love being with you but
youre not perfect. And I am no more lucky to be with you than you are to be with me. And I
need for you to tell me that you arent with me just because youre afraid of being alone, just
because you want to be with someone.

Other Plays By Kellie Powell

Collaboration
Confrontation over creative property erupts between two friends with a long and complicated
history, when Shane rewrites Kims play, and she refuses to allow the new version to be produced.
Finally, Kim reveals that Shane was the inspiration for the uneven love story he has destroyed, and
that their relationship has been more significant to her than he ever suspected.

Youre right. You promised nothing. But I knew I wanted those moments few and far
between as they were I wanted whatever time and affection you could give me. No matter what
it cost me. It was enough for me, somehow. I felt like you found comfort in me. And maybe I
wasnt your first choice, you know? But I was glad that I was somewhere on the list. I let it happen
again and again, more times than I can even count
I knew youd never strive for me. Youd never have to. When it comes to you, I cant afford
to play hard-to-get. Youll never have to chase me, because Ill always be within reach.
Ive seen the best and the worst of you and I love you. I love the way you can tell me what
Im thinking. I love the way you tell a story, drawing me in. I love you for all the times you
convinced me, with a stupid joke, or even just a look to stop taking myself so seriously and just
enjoy my life. Nothing could ever make me regret the way I feel about you.

Dogface
A seven-year-old girl is traumatized and scarred after being attacked by a dog. Her classmates
ostracize her and give her the name Dogface which continues to haunt her long after grade
school. The alienation and rejection initiate a lifelong struggle with feelings of inferiority, and a
desire to challenge Americas obsession with beauty. Ultimately, Dogface must find a way to
reclaim her self-worth, despite her alleged ugliness.

Nurses were coming in, mopping up blood and asking questions and trying to establish how much
of my face was still there, whether the nerve endings were alive. My face felt puffy, and I was
light-headed
And then, I was lying on a table, squinting into a bright light above me I cant feel it. If I look
out of the corner of my right eye, I can see it, the silver needle, moving up and down. So I dont
look. Youre not allowed to cry or they might mess up your stitches. You cant move at all. They
keep saying, It will all be over soon.
They lied. I was conscious the entire time. I was awake while they sewed my face back
together. What I remember most is the bright light, and the strangely disembodied voices of my
parents and the doctors, trying to keep the patient calm
