AdamisnotGod

SomeofBrighamYoung'sdiscourseshavebeeninterpretedtomeanthatBrighamYoung
believedthatAdamisGod,theEternalFather.Theseinterpretationsalldirectlycontradict
scripture,andarethereforefalseandmustbediscardedbyeveryrationalbelieverofscripture.
PresidentSpencerW.KimballinhisclosingaddressattheOctober1976GeneralPriesthood

Thereferencehereto"God"cannotrefertoJesusChristbecauseitwasnotChristwhomadethe

AdamissubordinatetoJesusChrist

AnotherreasonthatAdamcannotbeGod,theFather,isbecauseAdamissubordinatetoJesus
Christ.ThisisaffirmedinJude,verse9inwhichMichael(whoisAdam)darednotbringa

ThesubordinationofAdamtoChristisfurtherevidencedbysection78oftheDoctrineand

20Wherefore,dothethingswhichIhavecommandedyou,saithyourRedeemer,eventheSon

InanarticleonPriesthood,preparedinJulyof1839,theProphetJosephSmithrigidly
bracketedthepositionofAdaminthepriesthoodhierarchy.Onpage158ofTeachingsofthe
ProphetJosephSmith,Josephiscitedasstating:

HowhavewecomeatthePriesthoodinthelastdays?Itcamedown,down,inregularsuccession.
Peter,James,andJohnhaditgiventothemandtheygaveittoothers.ChrististheGreatHigh
PriestAdamnext.[TPJS158]

Somehavepointedoutthatthisstatementisambiguous,andcouldeithermeanthatChristis
superiortoAdam,orthatChristissubordinatetoAdam,dependinguponwhether"next"is
interpretedas"nexthigher"or"nextlower."Thisstatementthereforeonlyrequiresthatthe
hierarchyofpriesthoodauthorityberepresentedinoneofthefollowingtwoways,

JesusChrist Adam(Michael)
| or |
Adam(Michael) JesusChrist

However,inthesamearticle,just5paragraphsearlier,JosephSmithmadethefollowing
statement:

ThePriesthoodwasfirstgiventoAdamheobtainedtheFirstPresidency,andheldthekeysofit

Therefore,NoahalsostandsnexttoAdaminpriesthoodauthority.WithJesusChristandNoah,

AdamandEvewereUnmarriedwhentheycameintotheGardenofEden

InKirtland,onNovember24,1835,whileperformingthemarriageforNewelKnightandLydia
Goldthwaite,theProphetJosephSmithstatedthatmarriageisaninstitutionofheaven,which
wasinstitutedinthegardenofEden:

IhadaninvitationtoattendaweddingatBrotherHyrumSmith'sintheeveningalsotosolemnize

ThatmarriagewasinstitutedinthegardenofEdenmeansthatthefirstmarriagewasperformed
inthegardenofEden.TheonlypeoplewhocouldhavebeenmarriedinthegardenwereAdam
andEve.Thefactthattheirmarriagewasperformedinthegardenmeansthattheywerenot
marriedwhentheyfirstenteredthegarden.Beingunmarriedpriortolivinginthegardenof

AdamisasonofGod

Another,andevenmorepositivereasonthatAdamisnotGod,TheEternalFather,isbecause
