A Course in Technical English for Saudi Students
of the Industrial Institutes
Introduction
The aim of this text book is to make it a useful learning tool for the students at the Industrial Institutes
studying English as a foreign language in Saudi Arabia.
The level of the students intended for this course is the post beginners to intermediate level in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. That is the 16+ Industrial Institutes students who have studied general English
for three years or more. The book is also intended for professionals who have not studied English
formally for some time, and wish to refresh their knowledge of the language.
The course consists of three components, the student book, the workbook and the audio cassette and/or
CD.
The brainstorming section allows the students to think about the topic by giving them pictures or
vocabulary related to the topic. The teacher in this section will be asking questions concerning each
picture to initiate a response on the topic from the students. This activity also presents the students with
the opportunity to practice their speaking skills with their teachers as well as with each other.
The vocabulary preview section mainly concentrates on the words used in the unit so as to help the
students be familiar with the language.
The listening and reading section allows the students to interact with listening to the text and filling in any
missing blanks.
The students are then given a reading section where they can read about something related to the theme of
the unit.
The grammar section emphasizes various grammar rules that the students will need in learning English
language.
The writing section encourages the students to write about something related to the unit. This will require
extra help from the teacher.
The Workbook
The book is accompanied with a workbook which is also divided into fourteen units. Each unit consists of
four main areas. Matching, vocabulary skills, vocabulary practice and grammar. The questions and topics
