Consider delivery. Before you order that really cool ceramic coffee
mug or oversized golf umbrella with your company logo on it, consider how
you are going to be distributing these gifts. A refrigerator magnet is cheap to
mail; a coffee mug is not. Is there room in your van or suitcase to take 1,000
water bottles to a local tradeshow, or would something smaller and lighter
work better?

Go for shelf life. Speaking of water bottles, make sure you are getting
enough bang for your buck when you decide to give something away. Sure,

parade goers in your town may appreciate a cold bottle of water with your
company name on its custom printed label, but its a one-time-use item. A
refillable water bottle, on the other hand, can be used (and seen) for years.
Dont dismiss the classics. A T-shirt is a walking billboard, and pens
can change hands many times before they run dry. Just remember, cheap-
est isnt always best. Consider what something of poor quality says about
your business, and how its unlikely someone will use a cheap item even
once. A good quality shirt can promote your business for years. One that
shrinks the first time it is washed might be used to wash a car one time.
Giving away cheap throwaway trinkets adds plastic to the waste stream,
whereas an item with a useful life gives your company a more environmen-
tally responsible image.

TAKING OVER
The elder Powells, Windell and Elbert, start-
ed the business in 1975 probably to get out of
farming, Powell says. In addition to pumping and
repairing septic systems, they manufactured, sold
and installed septic tanks.
Powell learned the trade starting at an early
age. Ive been working here since I was old enough
to walk, he says. Shortly after Powell took over the
business, a chance remark by a cousin planted a
seed in his mind. The cousin needed restrooms for
a construction project and suggested Powell pro-
vide them. Powell bought 16 units and a vacuum
truck, essentially starting a new line of business
even though he admits the timing might not have
been the best.
It was pretty much right when the recession
was starting to hit hard, he

Vacuum Hose Reel from Hannay

Designed to Save Time and Keep
Technicians Safe
By Craig Mandli

Putting away the vacuum hose following a pumping job can be a messy,
tedious process. Whether wrapped on hooks on the back of the tank or laid
on hose trays on both sides of the tank, technicians may have to climb a lad-
der or work around other equipment on the truck to return the hose and
move on to the next job.
Engineers at Hannay Reels saw these challenges and designed a self-
rewind hose reel specifically for vacuum truck applications. The reel was on
display for the first time at the 2016 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treat-
ment & Transport Show. draulic motor or crank rewind are available Ken Fritz, left, engineering

other equipment. You dont want to have to move equipment around every
time you take the vacuum hose off and put it back on.
According to Fritz, many 2016 WWETT Show attendees agree. They
even sat down and figured out ways to incorporate the hose reel onto their
existing trucks. I talked to a lot of septic pumpers and portable restroom
service techs that loved the idea of having an integrated reel on their trucks
dedicated to their vacuum hose, he says. It can save so much time, espe-
cially those guys servicing special events where the restrooms are spread
out. This way they wont have to manually wrap up the hose every time they
stop to service a new set of restrooms. The reel does it for them.

Financing for Hannay typically focuses its attention on jetter and pressure washer
reels, so the large vacuum hose reel is a departure.

VIP BEST 1WHY? BECAUSE ONLY THE BEST WILL DO
This company was started 27 years ago under a different name. We had one goal in mind: produce a
better portable restroom. Create a restroom so no matter where you are on this earth, it flushes clean
water 24/7 with no sight or odor of the waste. Most of all make it JUST LIKE HOME.

We wanted to target the construction industry and the special events where a CHEMICAL portable
restroom is not accepted by all users.

people who have worked more than 200 years combined in the portable

portable sanitation professional who is functioning as a service technician
falls into five broad categories or knowledge domains:
Transportation and logistics
Servicing portable sanitation equipment
Safety and hazard management
Recordkeeping
Professional demeanor and conduct
The PSAI is eager to learn how real service technicians turn this
knowledge into action on the job. For starters, we developed a Job Analysis
tool a special kind of survey that will help us better understand what tasks
are being done, how frequently they occur, and how important they are.
When this exercise is complete, we will make the information available
to the industry in a variety of ways that will support portable sanitation
operators business success. Well also use it to improve the training and
credentialing services we offer.
Versions of the story about the fix-it man have been floating around
for at least 100 years probably because it resonates with people. What
looks easy is really the result of a lot of knowledge and experience both
often overlooked or undervalued. The PSAI wants to make sure that doesnt
