MG 3600 Overview
The Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) is a small/medium H.248-controlled
Trunk/Media Gateway designed to provide connectivity between the public
switched telephone network (PSTN) and a voice over IP (VoIP) network. It
is fully controlled by the VoIP network Softswitch which instructs it to set-up
and tear-down the media connections to other endpoints in the VoIP
network (i.e. media control) as well as to detect events and generate
signals on the links connecting it to the PSTN.
The MG 3600 supports the following functionalities:
y Signaling System 7 (SS7) Trunk Gateway (i.e. SS7 Signaling Gateway
(SG) and H.248 controlled Media Gateway(MG))
y Primary Rate Interface (PRI) Trunk Gateway (i.e. PRI SG and H.248
controlled MG)
The following figure illustrates a typical application using the MG 3600.

MG 3600 Functionalities
This chapter describes the following functionalities of the Media Gateway
3600 (MG 3600):
y Management Methods
y Signaling System 7 (SS7) and Primary Rate Interface (PRI) Backhaul
y Operational Measurements (OM) and Early Warning Metrics (EWM)
y Network Time Protocol (NTP)
y Alarms
y Media Control
y Redundancy
y Maintenance
y Software Upgrade
Management Methods
The Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) can be provisioned, monitored and
maintained either locally or remotely, via Command Line Interface (CLI),
over Telnet, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or via Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) messages.
The gateway can be managed locally using a serial connection. The serial
cable is connected between the RS-232 connector of the GCC rear card
and an ASCII monitor (craft) terminal or a PC equipped with a terminal
emulation program (for example the MS Windows Hyper-terminal).
Attention: The serial connection method is especially useful for the initial setup and IP
configuration of the gateway, as well as for troubleshooting.

22 MG 3600 Functionalities
The gateway can be managed remotely via Ethernet, using the following
interfaces:
y Telnet and FTP: Telnet provides remote management access to the
software used in local configuration. The same menu-driven embedded
software is connected to telnet through the Ethernet port. It provides
the interface for managing and administrating the MG 3600 using the
CLI.
In addition, you can use FTP to download or upload MG 3600
configuration parameters and software files.
It is possible to have six concurrent Telnet connections to the system.
y SNMP: You can use SNMPv1 and SNMPv2/c to manage and
administer the MG 3600. SNMPv2 provides continuous feedback
without having to be queried by the SNMP console. The gateway
implements the relevant standard Management Information Bases
(MIBs) and some proprietary MIBs. The MIBs are available for
integration into the overall network management application.
The MG 3600 functions as an SNMP agent. The MG 3600 is viewed as
a single network element. Management is performed via the active
GCC card.
y EMS software. For more information, please refer to the Media
Gateway 3600 User Guide - Element Management System.

PRI Backhaul
The MG 3600 serves as a signaling gateway (SG) for PRI backhaul. In PRI
backhaul, the MG 3600 serves as a SG to transport PRI signaling between
a PRI-controlled device (e.g. a PRI PBX) and a softswitch. PRI backhaul is
defined as the termination at the SG of the lower layers of the signaling
stack for a switched circuit network and the transport (or backhaul) to the
softswitch of the higher layers of the same signaling stack. The PRI D-
channel signaling flow through the PRI backhaul is for call control and not
for connection/media control.
PRI links are automatically defined with the E1 link defined as PRI. The
timeslot in which the PRI protocol runs can be configured.

OM and EWM
The Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) supports the following software that
reports the call count, events, and components of call statistics:
y OM (Operational Measurements)
y EWM (Early Warning Metrics)
OM
The gateway maintains a number of OM parameters monitoring the
performance of the system. The OMs are divided into two groups: OMs
defined by standard SNMP Management Information Bases (MIB) and
proprietary OMs specific to the MG 3600 system and application. The
proprietary OMs are accessible through the CLI interface, or via proprietary
SNMP MIBs.
OMs are collected and stored in 15-minute intervals for a 24-hour period.

time. The MG 3600 contains an internal clock that is synchronized with the
network time using the NTP protocol.
The NTP module in the MG 3600 works in a client mode.
The clock maintains millisecond granularity and should be synchronized
accordingly. For greater accuracy and redundancy, the MG 3600 is able to
synchronize to the network time using up to three NTP servers. The IP
addresses of the three servers are provisioned using the CLI or Element
Management System (EMS).
Alarms
The Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) is capable of sending alarms to an
SNMP management station using the SNMP trap mechanism. Each trap
(alarm) includes a configurable alarm level. The operator can choose
which alarms to receive. The configurable alarm levels in ascending
urgency are warning, minor, major, and critical.
Each outgoing alarm trap contains a sequential number, the state of the
faulty component, and a timestamp.
Critical alarm levels are normally reserved for faults. In case of a critical
alarm, the operator should test the faulty system and replace the faulty
component. Major alarms are used for indicating faults that may cause
degradation in the level of service, whereas minor alarms only affect the
system performance.
In addition, the SNMP traps can be sent to an external Syslog server in a
readable format. The MG 3600 can send the SNMP traps to the MG 3600
EMS and up to two additional managers.
Media Functions
Media Options
Voice
On the public switched telephone network (PSTN) side of the network, the
gateway is connected via E1 links.
On the voice over IP (VoIP) side of the network, the media is transported
using the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP). The RTP protocol and
associated RTP Control Protocol (used to monitor the line) are defined by
the IETF RFC 3550. The relevant parts of the RTP profile for audio and
video (IETF RFC 3551) are also implemented.
The product supports end of call quality of service (QoS) reporting using
H.248.

Echo Canceller
To eliminate the echo that may be present on the time division multiplexing
(TDM) links coming from the PSTN (due to high delay), the gateway
contains an echo canceller. The echo canceller is implemented according
to the ITU-T recommendation G.168.
The maximum echo delay tail is 128 ms.
Jitter Buffer
The gateway is equipped with dynamic jitter buffers enabling it to adapt to
the variations of the network condition.
The operator can control the maximum size of the jitter buffer (up to 300
ms), and can also to freeze its size by deactivating the automatic size
adaptation.
Modem/Fax Options
On the packet switched telephone network (PSTN) side of the network, fax
and modem calls are transported as voice calls.
Carrier VoIP

MG 3600 Functionalities 29
On a high quality network with very low delay and no jitter or packet loss,
fax and modem calls can be transported as normal voice calls using the
G.711 codec. This method is called Voice Band Data (VBD).
On low quality and networks that are not well-managed networks or
networks that use only low bit rate (LBR) codecs (e.g. G.729), the Fax
Relay ITU-T T.38 protocol is typically used for fax transport. The T.38
protocol can also be used with G.711.
The gateway is also capable of recognizing the fax or modem call, freezing
its jitter buffer, and using the G.711 codec (on a high quality network) on
this call. The echo canceller is removed only in the case of a detection of a
slow modem.

Redundancy
The Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) is a carrier-grade product. This is
achieved by providing redundancy for all system components.
The redundancy of the system components is as follows:
y GCC1+1
y GMC1:N
y Power supplyN+1

MG 3600 Functionalities 31
GCC Redundancy
The gateway contains two GCCs for redundancy. One of the GCCs is the
active card performing all the call processes, signaling, resource allocation,
management, and other functions, while the inactive GCC is in a hot-
standby mode. The two cards exchange all the information required to
maintain the system activity, sanity, and provisioning when a switch activity
occurs.
The two GCCs share the same IP addresses for signaling, media, and
management paths (configuration dependent). This ensures that the rest of
the network is unaffected by an activity switch. In case of a switch activity
the new active GCC informs the L2 network that the traffic to the gateway
is to be routed to the MAC address of its Ethernet port rather than the MAC
address of the failed GCC's Ethernet port. This is done by the new active
GCC sending an ARP/GARP message (Generic Attribute Registration
Protocol).
The switch activity process between the two GCC cards does not impact
stable calls (i.e. active connections and the voice stream). Calls that are in
the setup stage may be dropped during switch activity.
GMC Redundancy
The MG 3600 provides 1:N GMC redundancy. The operator can add a
supplementary GMC per shelf which is used only in case of a failure of one
of the other GMCs. Upon a GMC failure, the E1 links of the failed GMC are
switched to the standby GMC rear board; the redundant GMC takes control
of the calls that were handled by the faulty GMC. This operation is called
switchover; the operation of returning back from the redundant GMC to the
active GMC is called switchback.
The switchover and switchback processes do not drop active calls and
have no impact on the voice stream. Calls in the setup stage that refer to
the faulty GMC may be dropped during switchover and switchback.
Automatic switchback to the original configuration can be provisioned. By
default, switchback occurs automatically after the failure is recovered
through a maintenance action. The operator can also configure the system
to perform the switchback only manually. In this case, even if the failed
GMC recovers, the system will not switch back automatically and only the
operator will be able to switch back manually.
Maintenance
File System Operations
The operator can perform file system operations on the files that are saved
in the Embedded Flash Drive (EFD):
y Copy files to and from the EFD
y Rename files on the EFD

maintenance gwMaint healthCheck command. This command prints a
list of the current non-working components. Some of the possible entries
are shown in the following list:

Software Upgrade
The Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) provides the capability to remotely
upgrade the installed software via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and the
Command Line Interface (CLI) or by using the Element Management
System (EMS).
Attention: When upgrading via FTP and the CLI, the upgrade process must be performed
manually.
When upgrading using the EMS, the upgrade process can be performed automatically.
Attention: For redundancy, all of the software files are saved on the EFD of both the active
GCC AND the inactive GCC. The synchronization process of the EFD ensures data
synchronization between the GCCs.
Umbrella Version
The software used on the MG 3600 is contained in four separate
components, which can be downloaded individually. The four software
components are:
y GCC
y GMC
Carrier VoIP
MG 3600 Trunk Gateway User Guide - CLI
01.05 Standard
April 2008
Copyright 2008, Nortel Networks
34 MG 3600 Functionalities
y Alarm Card
y DSP
Each of the individual software components has its own version
numbering. However, the four components are grouped together into an
Umbrella version. The umbrella has a version number; for example, MG
3600 v1.0. If any of the individual components is later upgraded, its own
version number will change, which will result in a change of the umbrella
version.
The active and inactive GCCs contain a file on their embedded flash drive
named GatewayUmbrellaVersion.txt. This file contains the software
versions of all the MG 3600 elements to be used in the system and the
version of the Umbrella. It is highly recommended to not delete this file.
Deletion of this file will prevent the software being upgraded automatically
on card insertion.
The MG 3600 software is provided on a CD titled MG 3600 Gateway S/W
Version x.y. Transfer the MG 3600 files to the directory on the PC that is
dedicated for software upgrade.
If a second GCC is inserted into the shelf and the parameter for automatic
download is enabled, the inactive (second) GCC performs the following
actions:
y Checks that its software is the same as the software in the active
GCC's umbrella file.
y If it is a different version, it requests the active GCC to download the
correct software to its own embedded flash drive.
y The inactive GCC copies the software to flash and resets itself.

Upgrade Procedures
The embedded flash drive (EFD) of the GCC is a regular storage device in
which the software files and the umbrella file are stored. The GCC contains
a flat file system directory in which sub-directories are not allowed. The
software files should first be transferred to the EFD and then flashed to the
specific card. The upgrade process for the GCC, GMC, and Alarm Card is
described in general below:
y GCC:
Locate the new or updated load files on the operator PC (the client
PC).
Open an FTP session from the client PC to the Gateway
management IP address.
Switch the session to ASCII and PUT the GCC software. The GCC
load file typically begins with 'MG'. The file is transferred to the GCC
and stored in the active GCC. The synchronization process
transfers the file to the inactive GCC. It can take up to three minutes
for the synchronization to complete. Wait until a message is printed
to the CLI screen informing that the synchronization is complete.
Use the maintenance softwareUpgrade flashGCC command to
flash the software from the GCC's EFD into the GCC's flash
memory.
The MG 3600 outputs the flashing progress to the screen and
indicates when the GCC has been successfully flashed.
For further information, see flashGCC (page 197).
In order to flash the inactive GCC with the same software, use the
command maintenance SoftwareUpgrade flashMateGCC.
For further information, see flashMateGCC (page 199).
Wait until the inactive GCC has been flashed.
By default, the flashMateGCC command also restarts the inactive
GCC.
Wait until the inactive GCC finishes its initialization process.
Manually Switch Activity to the inactive GCC by using the command
maintenance gccMaint swactGCC.
From the active GCC, reset the new inactive GCC by using the
command maintenance gccMaint resetMateGcc.

First-Time Connection
To access the Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600) CLI for the first time, it is
recommended to power up the system and connect to the active GCC via
the RS-232 port. The activity LED on the front of the GCC indicates the
active GCC. See GCC LEDs (page 16).
If you connect to the inactive GCC, you are NOT able to perform any
provisioning.
Attention: It is also possible to connect to the system via a Telnet connection using the
default management IP address: 192.168.0.7. By default the management IP is routed to the
management port. If you use Telnet for the initial connection, it will automatically connect to
the active GCC.
If you connect via Telnet, you must connect to the management port.

Defining IP Addresses
After deciding which port to use for management, it is necessary to set the
IP address for signaling (IP-s), the IP address for media (IP-v), and the IP
address for management (IP-m).
Procedure 7: To map IP-m to the management port
1 Type provisioning networkConfig and press Enter.
The list of commands in the networkConfig directory appears.
2 Run the defMngIPLocation command to map the management IP
address to a physical port.
CLI(networkConfig)# defMngIPLocation -l<0|1>
Where:
-l0 = Map IP-m to the management port
-l1 = Map IP-m to the traffic port
For a complete description of this command, see defMngIPLocation
(page 73).
3 Run the dispMngIPLocation (page 73) command to view the physical
location of the management IP address and to validate that the
previous command was successful. For example:
CLI(networkConfig)# dispMngIPLocation
=========================================
Management IP physical location:
Management Port
=========================================
Procedure 8: To set IP-m when it is mapped to the management port
1 Type provisioning networkConfig and press Enter.
The list of commands in the networkConfig directory appears.

Ip address for media (IP-v) 172.18.159.5
System Default Gateway 172.18.159.1
System Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
==============================================
Attention: If IP-m is mapped to the management port, IP-s and IP-v must be on a different
subnet.
Attention: After changing the network configuration of the Gateway, perform a restart of the
entire gateway by powering down and up.

50 Getting Started
Attention: The destination network address that is saved into the table is shown after the
addIPRoute command completes successfully. The output may be different from the
address that was entered in the addIpRoute command because it is the result of a logical
AND between the d parameter (destination) and the m parameter (mask).
The gateway parameter (-g) must be reachable from the GCC, it must also be on the same
network as the GCC management IP.
If there are any IP changes in the Gateway, the IP routing table is updated in order to reflect
the IP address changes. If the networks that are connected directly to the GCC are changed,
the IP routes will be deleted.
3 Run the dispIpRoute (page 79) command to view the defined IP routes
and to validate that the previous command was successful. For
example:
CLI(ipRouteTable)# dispIpRoute

This file is for backup purposes, but it can be also used to provision a new
gateway. In order to view and edit this file, the operator should get this file
by connecting to the Gateway using FTP and downloading the file.
dumpTones
Description
Saves all of the call progress tone configuration information to a file that
can be executed at a later time using the execConfigFile command.
Parameters
Syntax Type/Values Description
-h None Displays help for this command.
-f String Specifies the filename into which the call progress

Example
CAUTION
Risk of data loss
When running this command, if a file with the same name exists in the embedded
flash drive (EFD), it will be overwritten.
execConfigFile
Description
When running the execConfigFile command with an existing file name, this
configuration file is read in and each of the commands is executed in turn.
This command provides a quick and simple mechanism for provisioning
multiple MG 3600s with the same provisioning details.
Parameters
Syntax Type/Values Description
-h None Displays help for this command.
-f String Specifies the filename from which the CLI
commands are taken.

72 Command Reference
Example
CLI(provisioning)# execConfigFile -fGateway_Prov.txt
The Gateway_Prov.txt file is read and executed line by line. The
outputs of the execution are displayed on the console. The executed file
can contain the whole provisioning of the gateway or only a few
provisioning lines. It is the operators responsibility to match and relate the
contents of the provisioning file with the existing provisioning in the
gateway. I.e., if an execution command fails because it creates a
contradiction with the existing provisioning, the operator should fix and
rerun the file. An example of a contradiction of this sort is trying to define a
GMC in a slot in which another GMC is already defined or trying to define a
link on a GMC that is not provisioned.
Network Configuration
This section contains descriptions of the commands contained in the
networkConfig directory.
The commands in this directory allow you to configure the following
network parameters of the Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600):
y If the management interface is accessed through the management port
or the traffic port.
y The signaling IP address and the media IP address.
y The management IP address when accessed through either the
management port or the traffic port.
y The delay period before a switch activity will be performed from the
active GCC to the inactive GCC in case the active GCC detects that its
management port failed.
Attention: This parameter is useful in eliminating activity switch of the GCCs when the link
connected to the management port of the active GCC is moved. This can occur when
moving the link to another port of the L2 switch or moving it to another switch. This delay
parameter eliminates the possible dropping of calls that are in the setup stage.

saAfterMngPortFailure
Path
provisioning/networkConfig/
Description
The operator can decide if the gateway should switch activity upon failure
of the management port. If configured, the gateway performs a GCC switch
activity upon failure of the management port. The switch activity is
performed if the mate GCC is ready and all the conditions to perform the
switch activity are met.
The switch activity is performed after a certain delay after the management
port failure. The operator can use this command to configure the delay.
Setting a value of '-1' disables this feature.
If during the delay period, the management port is recovered, the switch
activity is not performed. This feature allows moving the management
cable from one location to another without switching activity. If the

GMC Configuration
This section contains descriptions of the commands contained in the gmc
directory and its subdirectories.
The commands in this directory allow you to configure the GMCs, E1 links,
alarm profiles, and link profiles of the Media Gateway 3600 (MG 3600).
It is important when carrying out GMC provisioning to perform the
commands in a specific order. The order is as follows:
1 Define the GMCs
4 Define the alarm profile.
Attention: A default alarm profile is defined in the system. Only define a new alarm profile if
you have specific requirements.
Attention: A default link profile is defined in the system. Only define a new link profile if you
have specific requirements.

If any of the GMC cards fail, the standby GMC card becomes active to
replace the failed GMC card. When the failed GMC card recovers from its
failure, the standby card can either continue to operate or pass its
operation to the recovered GMC (switch back).
This command allows you to set the standby card to remain active after the
recovery of a failed GMC card, or to set the standby to switch back
operation to the recovered GMC. The default is automatic switch back.
Parameters

Examples

Group 1 Alarms:
Group 1 alarms are statistical alarms and consist of bipolar violation (BPV),
frame bit error rate (FBER), serial line internet protocol (SLIP), cyclic
redundancy check 4 (CRC4), and far end block error (FEBE) events.
These are used to monitor the quality of the E1 link. The Grade of Service
for group 1 alarms is determined by the number of errors within a certain
threshold time period. There are two threshold levels: Maintenance
threshold and Out of Service (OOS) threshold. The threshold for each
group 1 alarm is defined individually. The maintenance threshold is an
internal event and the status of the link is not changed upon reaching the
maintenance threshold. When the system reaches the OOS threshold, the
gateway reports that the link is out of service and transmits a remote alarm
indication (RAI) to the remote party.
When the number of errors is below the OOS threshold level, the E1 link
returns to service and to operational mode. RAI transmission is stopped.
The default values for the group 1 alarms are given in the following table:
Carrier VoIP

86 Command Reference
Group 2 Alarms:
Group 2 alarms are steady alarms and consist of loss of signal (LOS), out
of frame (OOF), alarm indication signal (AIS), and RAI. Persistence time
and Guard time are timers. The Persistence time is the time that an alarm
is stable before the alarm is raised. The Guard time is the length of time
after the alarm is cleared before reporting that it is cleared.
PCM Alarms such as LOS, OOF, loss of frame alignment, AIS, and RAI all
last for a certain period of time. A group 2 alarm is set if the error event
lasts for longer than the Persistence time.
A link is defined as being in an OOS state if the event lasts for more than
the Persistence time. A link returns to service when there are no alarms
longer than the Guard time.
The default values for the group 2 timers are given in the following table:
Table 6: Group 2 Alarm Default Values
Alarm Type Value (ms)
Persistence time 50
Guard time 100
Bubbling
Bubbling is defined as an event of Group 2 alarms and is determined by
unstable group 2 alarms and the appearance and clearance of many
different group 2 alarms in a short period of time; for example, LOS, OOF,
LOS, OOF, etc. A bubbling link implies generally unstable link connections.
When the group 2 alarm is stable, bubbling disappears and the stable
alarm is displayed.

Software Error
The swerr (Software Error) directory contains commands to see and
control the system software error logs. The customer support team uses
the software error information to analyze the events that occur on the
gateway. Software errors contain information about the software events.
Software error information is logged in an internal buffer and can be
viewed when required by the user. The software error buffer is a cyclic
buffer.
Software error information can also be sent to an external Syslog server. In
order to send this information to the external syslog server, configure the
syslog server IP address.
The swerr directory contains the following commands:
y defPrintFlag (page 214)
y defSwerrFlags (page 214)
y dispSwerrFlags (page 215)
y defSwerrReceiver (page 216)
