Cover Letter
1. Are all 4 paragraphs present: Intro, Example 1, Example 2, Thank you?
2. Does the first paragraph state the job being applied for and give a topic sentences touching upon key skills
featured in paragraphs 2 and 3?
3. Do paragraph 2 and 3 follow P.E.A.: Point, Evidence, Analysis?
4. Do paragraph 2 and 3 show key skills (through examples of active doing) rather than tells about them?
5. What more would you add to this letter?
6. Is there anything you would cut?
7. Does the letter use you language (showing what the applicant offers the business) rather than I language
(show what the business offers the applicant)?
8. Is there any specific interest in a specific company shown? Does the writer seem to know about the company by
citing specific knowledge?
9. Circle the key skills you think the letter is written to demonstrate.
10. Is there formal block letter formatting? (address, paragraphs, and thank you are in the correct places)
11. Is the letter addressed to a specific person (if not, make up a name)?
12. Does the letter build an image of the writer actively and successfully doing something employable?
13. Put a star next to your favorite part of the cover letter (the most important part).
14. On the back, grade the cover letter: write a one-sentence justification for your grade.

1. Is the resume scannable: Clear vectors and visual hierarchy; most important information is first?
2. Is the resume uniform? Does it break uniformity of formatting (uses same fonts, italics, sizes in the same
sections) or parallelism in sentences?
3. Is the formatting of the resume too boring or too busy?
4. Does the resume include all major sections: Name, contact info, education, experience, skills and abilities, and
awards.
5. Does each bullet-pointed example start with an active verb? Are these verbs well chosen? Repeated?
6. Does each example demonstrate something that was actively done rather than passively received?
7. Does each example show (verbs that illustrate someone actively working) rather than tell (a list of noun
buzzwords and skills)?
8. Is each bullet point punctuated in a logical way (generally, with no punctuation if the sentences are incomplete
or at least each sentence has a period)?
9. Are there places that quantification of success could be added? i.e. hours of work, number of pages written, etc.
10. Are dates, position titles, and locations for each item relevant item present?
11. Does everything on the resume demonstrate the applicants employability?
12. What else would you add or expand on this resume?
13. What would you remove from this resume? Irrelevant things? Repetitive content?
14. Cut 5 words from this resume.
15. On the back, grade the resume: write a one-sentence justification for your grade.
