HESI ADMISSION ASSESSMENT EXAM

With the HESI Admission Assessment Exam, youll be tested in three main academic areas -
English Language, Math, and Science - and two personal assessment areas. By gauging your
academic readiness and identifying your learning and personality styles, we can determine if
you are ready for the rigors of the nursing program.

EXAMS THAT YOU MAY SEE INCLUDE:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Reading Comprehension Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading

comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage
comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.

Vocabulary and General Knowledge Contains vocabulary terms that are commonly used
in both general English-speaking settings and in health care fields.

Grammar Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their
uses, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc.
MATH

Basic Math Skills Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic
addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household
measures, general math facts, etc.
SCIENCE

Biology Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular
respiration, photosynthesis, etc.
LEARNER PROFILE

Learning Style Assesses preferred learning style.

Personality Profile Assesses personality related to preferred learning style.

REPORTING Once you have completed the exam, youll receive a report which includes
scoring explanations and missed questions by topic for the Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary
and General Knowledge, Grammar, and Basic Math Skills questions so you can see how you
performed on the exam.

What is HESI?

HESI isnt just one exam. Its a suite of products, including exams, to help students
prepare for their board exams (most commonly the NCLEX exams for nursing).

In most cases, individual schools select the specific HESI exams and prep-products that
will be made available to their students. The products chosen by the schools include
exams that can be taken before students ever enter the program, exams and prep-products
offered throughout individual courses, and a comprehensive exit exam that covers the
entire curriculum.

How does HESI help students prepare for certification exams most commonly the
NCLEX?

Questions on HESI exams are written at the critical-thinking level like those that
students will see on the board exam. That means the questions on HESI exams are often
more challenging than some of the other practice questions students will see throughout
their education.

So while HESI can be tough, so is the NCLEX. And the more often students are exposed
to the rigorous style of questions theyll see on the NCLEX or certification exam, the
more comfortable and confident theyll be when they take the actual exam.

If HESI is just a practice exam, why should I take it seriously? And what is
predictive accuracy?

HESI really will help you gauge how youll perform on the board exams. Detailed
studies have been conducted on HESI exit exams, and research shows that the HESI exit
exam is up to 99% predictive of NCLEX success. That means that if you succeed on the
HESI exit exam, youll most likely pass the NCLEX.
 Some schools also assign their own scores or passing requirements to HESI exams.
Those course requirements are established by each school not by HESI or Elsevier.

How do I prepare for a HESI exam?

The best way to go into your exams feeling confident is to practice first the earlier the
better! Here are some tools to help you get started:

HESI Case Studies and HESI Practice Tests are often required by instructors to help
get students ready for their HESI exams (and the boards.) Students whove used
them say theyre the best practice available to help prepare for HESI exams. The
questions are written like the questions youll see on the HESI exams, and there are
more in these products than in any other source! So if your instructor had you
purchase either or both of these products, make sure youre using them fully. You
wont regret it.
The HESI Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX is also great preparation for your
HESI exams. Besides additional questions for practice on the CD-ROM, youll also
find HESI Hints in the book. Read them carefully, along with all the rationales that
come with the questions. Students say this product really has helped them be more
successful on the exams.

What is remediation and why is it important in helping me prepare for the
NCLEX and future HESI exams?

Some of the best preparation for the NCLEX comes after youve taken a HESI exam.
Every exam comes with a free, online program through Evolve to help you review and
then improve your weaknesses. Its called online remediation, and its personalized
to your needs, based on your exam scores.

After your exam, youll get an email guiding you to Evolve.

Next, youll see a breakdown of the areas you need to work on.
 Finally, youre taken to small excerpts of content from Elsevier that specifically
relates to the topics you need to improve. Review questions are also often included
with the readings, to help you feel secure that you fully understand the topic.

The HESI online remediation is free, and its the best way to make sure you are spending
your valuable time before the NCLEX (or before a HESI retest) focusing on exactly what
you need to study.

Ive seen several websites that say they can help me study for the HESI exam, what
is your take on those sites?

These websites do not contain HESI content, and we do not endorse, support or are
affiliated in any way with these other websites. The services they provide are not based
on access to any HESI content (questions or exam structure), so beware of any promises
that you find with these products online. The best way to prepare for HESI exams is to
use products like those described above especially those based on actual HESI content.

Are there any mobile apps available to help me prepare?

HOW TO ACCESS YOUR REMEDIATION

Some of the best preparation for the NCLEX comes after youve taken your HESI
exam. Customized remediation content is delivered to you online to help you review
and then improve - in exam content areas where you are weak. Best of all its free!
Before you take a HESI exam, youll be asked to create an Evolve account.
Your remediation will be loaded into this online account.
An email will be sent to you from HESI Support to let you know when its ready.
Look for the email up to 72 hours after your exam has been completed and sent to HESI.
If you dont receive an email, check your spam filter or contact Elsevier Technical
Support at 1-800-222-9570.
Go to http://evolve.elsevier.com and login with your username and password.
 Your remediation will be located on your My Evolve page in your Content List.

USING YOUR REMEDIATION

The HESI online remediation is free, and its the best way to make sure you are
spending your valuable time before the NCLEX (or before a HESI retest) focusing on
exactly what you need to study.
After logging in on Evolve and selecting My Exams, youll click on HESI Testing and
Remediation.
Find your exam and select View Results.
From here, youll see a summary of how you performed on the exam.
Youll also get an at-a-glance view of the Review Materials prepared for you based on
areas of the exam where you didnt do so well with links to the review materials you need
to study.
Review materials include content excerpts, images, and tables from Elsevier nursing
textbooks so you get the best information available.
Engaging multimedia review materials such as videos, animations, audio clips, activities,
and case studies (applicable to specific exams) are also included with your customized
remediation content.
Practice Questions throughout help you to ensure youre understanding and applying
what youve been studying.

Exam History

1. Log into Evolve using your Username and Password. In the Content List of your My
Evolve Page, select HESI Assessment.

3. Under My Exams > Exam History > Exam Results, select the View Results link to access
Detailed Scoring Reports and remediation Review Materials.
Remediation Navigation Tips! The View Results link will quickly take you to your Detailed
Scoring Reports and remediation Review Materials for each exam.
The Study Packet column will tell you how many items are in your customized Study
Packet for each exam!

4. The selected exam summary screen shows the HESI Score, Class Average, Conversion
Score, and Percentile, provides a link to View Your Detailed Scoring Report, and includes
a summary view of HESI Scores, Recommended Scores, # of Questions Correct, and links to
View Materials by Specialty Area.
