The video I choose is called How Would You Feel If Your Son Chose This?. This video

is about a father (Mikki Willis) who decides to take his son (Azai) to the toy store. His son had

just had a birthday party not too long ago and received two of the same toys, so he decided to

take his son to exchange the toy. He had told Azai theyll exchange the toy for something he

doesnt have, and Azai chose to pick out a Little Mermaid Barbie doll. So then Mikki (the father)

asks the people who will be watching the video now how do you think a dad feels when his son

wants to get this(0:12), instead of the father being completely angry and unsupportive, the

father reacted completely different. He reacted in complete joy just like his son who chose the

toy. His words after were I let my boys choose their life that's how that's how mama and I not

tell we are right we just say whatever, you say yeah, choose it choose your expression choose

what you're into choose your sexuality, choose whatever and you have my promise right now

both of you, as we sit in this car is hot car this parking lot you have my promise forever, to love

you and accept you no matter what life you choose, yeah (0:28- 0:55). This reveals that the dad

is completely caring and loving and wont let society's views affect the way he treats/raises his

son.

Structural Functionalism was developed by Durkheim and Comte. Structural

Functionalism meaning why society functions the way it does by focusing on the relationships

between the various social institutions that make up society. In my opinion I think Durkheim and

Comte will have viewed this as if its normal, because todays society has shifted to people being
Guizar 2
more accepting of the LGBT community. Durkheim wouldnt see anything wrong with the child

instead hell see potential in society to shift and become more accepting towards the child just

like his father. Because the father and mother of the little boy are being supportive as the father

said in 0:28- 0:55, Durkheim will view this situation as a growth opportunity within our society.

Social-Conflict was developed by Marx. Social-Conflict meaning that individuals and

groups (social classes) within society interact on the basis of conflict rather than consensus. In

my opinion I think Marx would have viewed this as a major conflict between the LGBT

Community and the people against LGBT people. For example, people who support or are part

of the LGBT Community will totally love this video because of how accepting and supportive

the father is towards his son choosing a barbie doll as a toy. But of course everyone else who

isnt in support of the LGBT Community will find this video disgusting and unacceptable. But

there will also be people neutral about the situation because some people may not being support

of the LGBT Community but their opinion will be hes just a little boy he doesnt know right

from wrong and deserves to choose what he wants to play with. This video brings a lot of social

conflict to society due to the different views society has developed throughout time.

Symbolic Interactionism was developed by Weber. Symbolic Interactionism meaning that

symbols, or things to which we attach meaning, are the basis of social life. In my opinion Weber

will have viewed this situation as wrong because of the symbols society has developed; for

example, the barbie is a perceived a feminine figure. And boys are supposed to be perceived as a

good strong masculine figure. When honestly there isnt anything wrong with the situation, the

only thing thats wrong is the meaning society has given to things.

In my opinion the paradigm that is mostly shown in this video is Structural

Functionalism, because the father is very accepting of his son and very understanding from what
Guizar 3
is shown. But although this showed a lot of Structural Functionalism, this video did develop a lot

of Social-Conflict, causing people with opposing views to comment negative things.
