1 INTENDED USE
The SEBA Data Loggers type Dipper-PT and Dipper-PTEC are used for digital data recording of water level, water
temperature and conductivity in groundwater and surface water.
Additionally to conductivity, the parameters salinity, density and TDS can be calculated and stored with Dipper-
PTEC.

Depending on the model Dipper-PT/PTEC is either made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel 1.4404 or made
of highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel 1.4539 (resistant to saltwater). The 1.4404 stainless steel is not
suitable for permanent use in brackish water, sea water and other highly saline waters.

Consider the technical specifications in chapter 13 when using the device.

Solely the use in accordance with the instructions described in this user manual is an intended use.
Any other use is not an intended use of this device.

User manual Dipper-PT / Dipper-PTEC Chapter 2

2 DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT
This user manual gives information on the following types of the Dipper family:

Dipper-PT (water level and temperature measurement)

Dipper-PTEC (water level , temperature- and conductivity measurement)

The Dipper-PT/PTEC has a RS485 interface for configuring and calibrating the probe, retrieving measurement
values and reading data storage. All these functions can be executed with software SEBAConfig.
The RS485 interface can also be used to connect the remote data transmission system SlimCom 3G.
In combination with SlimCom3G, data and configurations can be transferred in various ways:

GSM or GPRS data retrieval (requires DEMASole and a retrieval modem)

GSM or GPRS configuration (requires SEBAConfig and a retrieval modem)
SMS data push (requires DEMASole and a retrieval modem)
FTP data push (requires an FTP server)

In addition, alarm SMS can be configured to send alarms to up to eight recipients when a certain parameter is
exceeded, such as insufficient battery voltage levels.

Temperature measurement (Dipper-PT and Dipper-PTEC):

The temperature measurement is conducted by a NTC30 sensor that is linearized via a polynomial for highest
accuracy.

Pressure measurement (Dipper-PT and Dipper-PTEC):

The robust ceramics pressure measuring cell makes it possible to measure the water level above the probe
(hydrostatic pressure). The combination of the referential pressure sensor and the special measuring cable
with integrated air pressure compensation capillary compensates air pressure fluctuations.

Conductivity measurement (only Dipper-PTEC):

The amplifier circuit works with a 4-electrode-measuring cell (2 current- and 2 voltage-electrodes). The
conductance of the measured liquid is determined by a current and voltage measurement. For determination
of the conductivity of natural waters the temperature coefficient is programmed according to European
standard (European Standard EN 27888:1994). The compensation can also be switched off or replaced by a
correction factor defined by the user. The nLF compensation for ground- and surface water as well as for
Copenhagen Water (sea water) works in the specified accuracy within a temperature range of 0C to 50C.
The reference temperature for the nLF and user-defined compensation is set to 25C by default. However it
can be modified by the user individually.

Salinity (only Dipper-PTEC):

The value of salinity is derived from the conductivity measurement. The conversion is based on the
conductivity, temperature compensated according to nLF seawater (Copenhagen Water) and converted
according to the IOT1971 (International Geographic Tables). This parameter is only available in combination
with the conductivity measurement.

TDS (only Dipper-PTEC):

The TDS value (Total Dissolved Solids) is derived from the conductivity measurement. With a free selectable
calibration factor the dissolved portion of solids, contributing to the conductivity, is calculated in ppm
respectively mg/l. The determination of TDS via conductivity is a high-speed process and an approach to the
standardized procedures for determination of exhaust steam sediments respectively dry filtrate sediments
(DIN 38409). This parameter is only available together with the conductivity measurement.

Density (only Dipper-PTEC):

Water density is calculated according to Fotonoff and Millard from the parameters salinity and temperature.

See hereafter the explanation of meanings of the used marks.

Warning: Situation that might result in injury or death.

Attention: Situation that might result in damage to the device.

Important notice: Important notice and additional information.

Working with electrical voltage

By handling devices, which are supplied by electrical voltage, the valid VDE-instructions, especially VDE 0100,
VDE 0550 und VDE 0700 have to be considered.

Before opening an instrument, pull off the mains plug (if existing) and make sure that the instrument is
without power supply.

Parts, construction groups or instruments must only be set into operation, in case they are built into a
housing and protected against touching. During installation they have to be without power.

It is only allowed to use tools at the instruments, parts or construction groups, in case it is secured that the
instruments are dropped out and the electric loads which are stored in the construction groups inside the
instrument, are unloaded.

Conducting cables or conductors, which are connected to the instrument, part or construction group, have to
be checked continuously to isolation faults or sites of fractures. By verification of a fault in the supply cable,
the instrument has to be switched-off immediately, until the defect cable has been exchanged.

Before setting into operation, generally check if the instrument or construction group is suitable for the field
of application. In case of doubts, unconditionally contact specialists, experts or the manufacturer of the used
construction group!

4 INSTALLATION OF Dipper-PT
Attention
1. The bending radius of the cable must not be less than 40 mm! Do not fold the cable,
otherwise the integrated air pressure compensation capillary gets blocked and the
atmospheric pressure cannot be compensated anymore!

2. The drying cartridge has to be hung vertically downwards!

4.1 Preparation
Before the Dipper-PT can be adjusted optimally to the specific requirements of the measuring site, please ask
yourself the following questions:

a) What is the maximum expected water level at the measuring site (Minimum mounting height A min)?
b) What is the minimum expected water level at the measuring site (Maximum mounting height A max)?

The Dipper-PT should at least be placed 10 cm below the lowest anticipated water level.

4.2 Determination of mounting height

The distance from the top of the monitoring well
to the minimum water level plus 10 cm is the
maximum mounting height (A max).

The system length S in this example and often

in practice as well is equal to the hanging
depth.
If the position of the hanging point of the Dipper-
PT does not match the reference point, the
system length must be changed according to the
difference.

Attention
The mounting height A min must be
greater than A membrane (absolute
approx. 50 cm).
If the water level rises above the
membrane of the drying cartridge, water
pressure is no longer registered and water
can enter the membrane and damage the
Dipper-PT!

In order to record water level changes without

gaps the difference between the maximum
mounting height (A max) and the minimum
mounting height (A min) must be less or equal to
the measuring range of the pressure sensor. In
case of water levels exceeding the measuring
range of the pressure sensor, a constant water
level is indicated.

8.7 Configuration of data recording

You can choose the following measuring methods:

Normal measure
Averaging
Event control
Delta mode
QuickLog

Data recording can be activated or deactivated for each channel separately. The measuring method and the
recording cycle can also be defined individually for each channel (except with QuickLog).

Depending on the configuration and type of your data logger, the list of existing channels may vary. Thus it is
possible that the screenshots of this user manual differ from the illustration on your screen. However the
configuration of data recording, measuring method and recording cycle is identical in all cases, independent
from the type of channel/parameter (except with QuickLog).

The above mentioned measuring methods are described particularly in the following subchapters.

8.7.1 Measuring method Normal measure

1. Define the recording cycle without event.

2. Define the event cycle

3. Click "Threshold value settings"

4. Either choose "Exceeding of Threshold Value" or "Undershooting of Threshold Value" from the dropdown
menu.

5. Enter threshold value and hysteresis.

In this example for setting Exceeding of Threshold Value; the event cycle is activated when the value is
higher than 5.00 m (e.g. measuring value 5.10 m). The event cycle is deactivated when the value falls
below 4.90 m (threshold value minus hysteresis), e.g. 4.70 m.

If the setting is Undershooting of Threshold Value, the event cycle is activated when the value is lower
than 5.00 m (e.g. measuring value 4.90 m). The event cycle is deactivated when the value exceeds 5.10 m
(threshold value plus hysteresis), e.g. measurement value 5.30 m.

6. Define the event control channel either as master channel or as slave channel.
You can define a channel with event control as a master channel by the following setting:
Choose: "Event state is triggered by Event Mode Settings below"
Select checkbox: "Settings will be used to trigger event state of other channels".

For all channels that shall be controlled by this master channel, do the above mentioned settings and
define them as a slave channel by the following setting:
Choose: "Event state is triggered by any master channel".

In case the set event (Exceeding or Undershooting of Threshold Value) of the master channel happens,
the event cycle of the master channel will also be activated/deactivated on all slave channels.

7. Confirm settings with Ok.

8. Continue with next channel.

43
User manual Dipper-PT / Dipper-PTEC Chapter 8

8.7.4 Measuring method Delta Mode

The delta mode is used to automatically activate a shorter measuring cycle (delta cycle) when a certain
alteration of a measuring value has been exceeded during a normal measuring cycle (standby cycle).

2
1 3

1. Section shows which channel you are editing currently.

2. Activate or deactivate recording of the channel.
3. Choose "delta mode" from the dropdown menu.

44
User manual Dipper-PT / Dipper-PTEC Chapter 8

3
1
2

6
5

1. Define the normal recording cycle (standby cycle).

2. Define the delta cycle (Activated when delta value is exceeded).

3. Click "Delta value settings"

4. A shorter measuring cycle called delta cycle (= event controlled recording cycle, e.g. 2 min.) will be
activated when the set value of delta of delta cycle (true for increasing as well as decreasing of a
measuring value, e.g. 1.00 m) is exceeded within the set standby cycle (= normal recording cycle, e.g. 10
min.).
Setting a value for deactivation of delta cycle, thus return to the standby cycle is set by "delta of standby
cycle". In other words: Which alteration of a measuring value during 2 delta cycles (e.g. 2 min.) has to
arise that the system returns to the normal measuring cycle (standby cycle). Since the measuring cycles of
delta cycle are in any case shorter than the ones of standby cycle, this ratio also has to be considered for
choosing an appropriate value for the "delta of standby cycle" for returning to the normal measuring.

As per above scenario, this value (delta of standby cycle) is calculated as follows:
Ratio of delta cycle to standby cycle
2 min / 10 min = 0.2 (quotient)

Quotient * "delta of delta cycle"

0.2 * 1.00 m = 0.20 m

Consequently:
A water level increase of 1.00 m during a 10 min cycle complies with a water level increase of 0.20 m
during a cycle of 2 min.

Thus enter a value which is < 0.2 m for the "delta of standby cycle" (e.g. 0.15 m) in order to get a proper
switch from delta cycle back to standby cycle.

5. Define the delta mode channel either as master channel or as slave channel.
You can define a channel with delta mode as a master channel by the following setting:
Choose: "Event state is triggered by Event Mode Settings below"
Select checkbox: "Settings will be used to trigger event state of other channels".

For all channels that shall be controlled by this master channel, do the above mentioned settings and
define them as a slave channel by the following setting:
Choose: "Event state is triggered by any master channel".

In case the settings (delta of delta cycle resp. delta of standby cycle) of the master channel occur, the
delta mode of the master channel will also be activated/deactivated on all slave channels.

6. Confirm settings with "Ok".

7. Continue with next channel.

8.7.5 Measuring method QuickLog

For special applications like pumping tests, SEBA data loggers Dipper-PT and Dipper-PTEC offer an optional
recording mode with very short measuring cycles named QuickLog.

QuickLog-Mode is only available with Dipper-PT or Dipper-PTEC, if this feature has explicitly been ordered
from SEBA. In case you already own a data logger Dipper-PT or Dipper-PTEC and you would like to upgrade to
QuickLog, please contact SEBA.

Possible measuring cycles in QuickLog-Mode:

Dipper-PT: 1 second to 12 hours
Dipper-PTEC: 2 seconds to 12 hours

At this stage you do not have to set the measuring cycle yet since the different measuring intervals and
variable measuring cycles are controlled by the integrated recording scheduler.
These settings can only performed in the classic view of SEBAConfig.

Before you switch to the classic view of SEBAConfig, first perform the settings in chapters 8.8 and 8.9 . After
that, switch to SEBAConfig classic view by clicking on the following button in the bottom left corner of
software SEBAConfig:

8.7.5.1 Increase Baudrate automatically

Important notice
The channel Power Supply cannot be recorded with the QuickLog measuring cycle. The recording
cycle for this channel has to be set independently from the QuickLog-Mode.

Dipper-PT battery lifetime in QuickLog-Mode with 1 second measuring cycle:

Dipper-PT with internal Lithium battery: maximum 7 days
Dipper-PT with external battery compartment (separately available): approx. 24 days

Due to the short measuring cycle and the related high power consumption, the lifetime of the
batteries is significant shorter than in the normal measuring mode. Please consider that the internal
Lithium batteries of Dipper-PT can only be changed by SEBA!

Dipper-PT and Dipper-PTEC have a ring memory. That means, the memory will be overwritten as
soon as it is full. Since in the QuickLog-Mode a large number of data is recorded in a short time, it is
likely that the ring memory will be overwritten during one recording schedule and data of one or
more sections of the recording schedule get lost.
The 4MB memory of Dipper-PT and Dipper-PTEC is able to record approx. 340,000 measuring values.
This capacity is sufficient for the following recording times before the memory is overwritten:

Dipper-PT (2 channels): Water level and temperature with 1s measuring cycle: max. 47 hours
Dipper-PT (1 channel): Water level or temperature with 1s measuring cycle: max. 94 hours
Dipper-PTEC (3 channels): Water level, temperature, conductivity with 2s measuring cycle:
max. 62 hours

If you double the time of the measuring cycle, you also double the maximum recording time before
the ring memory is overwritten.

During QuickLog, all functions of telemetric data transmission (SlimCom 3G) are deactivated. Online
monitoring, -control, or alarming is not possible during QuickLog. Measuring data has to be read-out
manually at site.

For configuration of QuickLog-Mode, SEBAConfig Version 1.09.0000 or higher is mandatory!

8.7.5.3 QuickLog data recording

During QuickLog, data of all activated channels will be recorded with the same recording cycle. Only the
measuring cycle of the channel Power supply can be configured individually.

Important notice
If the measuring cycle for the channel Power supply is set individually
for QuickLog, this measuring cycle also remains effective for the normal
measuring mode after QuickLog is finished!
Usually the channel Power supply is recorded in a shorter cycle during
QuickLog.
In that case, do not forget to change the cycle of the channel Power
supply after QuickLog is finished, in order to not burden the system
needlessly during the normal measuring mode.

1. Choose the register "Channels".

2. Choose a channel from the list you would like to configure.
3. Check the box Data Logging Active to record this channel in QuickLog-Mode.

QuickLog settings are pre-configured by SEBA before delivery of a Dipper-PT and comply with the used power
source. These settings are not available in the standard user interface of SEBAConfig.

In case you would like to change the power source of an existing Dipper-PT with QuickLog, for example by
attaching an external battery compartment (separately available), then you also have to adjust the type of
power source in the QuickLog settings.

In order to carry out these settings, login as admin in SEBAConfig.

Follow the below steps to login as admin:

3. Download and show data

Important notice
Depending on the length of the recording schedule and the chosen measuring cycles, it is likely that there
is collected a large amount of data in the memory during QuickLog operation. In order to get the
maximum transmission speed for data download to your PC, please make sure that you have set the
increase of baud rate to automatic when you connected to Dipper-PT/PTEC. Latency can be very long
during data read-out if you did not choose this setting!
Please see chapter 8.7.5.1 for more information on how to set the increase of baud rate to automatic.

Open the dialog for downloading measurement data by clicking on Download data. During display of this
dialog, recording is stopped.

Now choose the kind of range for data download from the dropdown menu, e.g. since last download.

By clicking Download, measuring data can be saved to one or several files.

By clicking Show, data can be visualized in DEMASvis.

Important notice
When closing the dialog, visualization of measuring data by DEMASvis is closed as well!

4. Change setup
In order to change the setup of the data logger, the recording has to be stopped explicitly. When recording is
stopped, SEBAConfig automatically switches back to QuickLog configuration view. After the setup of the data
logger has been adjusted, the recording has to be started explicitly again.

Important notice
Data recording will be interrupted as long as you carry out actions like Download, Show, etc. during
QuickLog operation. During that time, there are no measuring values available. Data recording will
automatically be continued when these actions are shut.

9.3.3 Description of protocol for SMS Push

SMS data transmission sends compressed data which cannot be read on mobile phones. You need a modem
(SEBA GSM 742 or Desktop GSM/GPRS Modem GSM 74104) and software DEMASole for reception and
conversion of data.

Only data of one single channel can be sent in one SMS. In case there are several channels to be pushed, data
transmission will be done in several single SMS. Since the amount of transferred bytes is strongly limited with
SMS data transmission, even data of single channels will be separated into several SMS when the maximum
amount of bytes per SMS is exceeded.

11.7 Calibration of conductivity sensor

The 4 ranges of the 4-pole conductivity measuring cell are pre-adjusted by the manufacturer with precision
resistors. The cell constant of a new sensor amounts to 0,475 1/cm and is also pre-calibrated. The cell can be
calibrated by the user either by means of a 0,01 or 0,1 molar KCl or with an exact reference instrument. The
cell constant can also be entered directly. Generally, the calibration is long-term stable. Depending on the
operation conditions, the electrode should be cleaned, checked and (if necessary) recalibrated every 6 12
months.

Please consider the information on cleaning in chapter 12.3!

1. Choose the channel Conductivity from the list.

2. Click on Set cell constant.

106
User manual Dipper-PT / Dipper-PTEC Chapter 11

Automatic calibration:
For the calibration please dip the conductivity sensor together with the temperature sensor into the solution.
This solution should be fresh and the dipped in parts should be cleaned and flushed before.
After the measurement has been started, the calibration runs automatically. The uncompensated measuring
value of the sensor will be accepted when it is constant. Together with the indicated uncompensated reference
value it forms the new cell constant.

1 2

1. Choose the calibration mode Automatic and dip the Dipper-PTEC (Conductivity and temperature sensor)
into the 0.01 resp. 0.1 molar KCl calibration solution.
2. Click on Start calibration.
3. Confirm the new cell constant after successful calibration by clicking Ok.

107
User manual Dipper-PT / Dipper-PTEC Chapter 11

Calibration with a reference device:

Dip the Dipper-PTEC together with a reference device into a desired calibration medium. The determined
reference value has to be entered as the nominal conductivity. With this nominal value and the manually
determined actual conductivity of Dipper-PTEC, the new cell constant is calculated. Precondition for the
calibration is that the Dipper-PTEC and the reference device are set to the same temperature compensation
and the reference value has a precision of +/-0.5 %. Alternatively, any preferred reference solution can be used
with a precisely defined conductivity over the concentration of the contents. In this instance, the same
instructions as with automatic calibration are followed.

1 2

1. Choose the calibration mode Calibration with reference value and dip the Dipper-PTEC (Conductivity
sensor and temperature sensor) in a desired calibration medium.
2. Click on the button Measure.
3. Enter the nominal conductivity value you have determined with the reference device.
4. Confirm the new cell constant by clicking Ok.

108

11.8 Calibration of total dissolved solids (TDS)

1. Choose the channel TDS from the list.

2. Enter a value for Gradient (A-Value) and the Offset (B-Value). Please see the following information on how
to determine these values:

By the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measurement the diluted matters in the measuring liquid are recorded. The
sum parameter is derived from the conductivity and is an approximate measurement to the standardized
exhaust steam sediments resp. dry- filtrate sediments. The calculation factor depends on the water type.
Usually this is between 500 and 1000, for fresh water approx. 670 (mg/l)/(mS/cm) referring to 25C reference
temperature and temperature compensation for natural waters (nLf). This factor is preadjusted in the probe.

This factor is either already known and can be directly transferred to the probe, or it has to be determined by
the user first. In order for the user to determine this factor, he needs to measure different conductivity values
from several characteristic water samples and then identify the total dissolved solids according to a normed
procedure. The proportion of mass (dissolved solids) to turbidity results in a new A-value. You need to enter
this value and maybe a B-value into software SEBAConfig.

12 MAINTENANCE
The Dipper-PT/PTEC includes several sensors, which have to be cleaned in regular intervals, depending on
pollution level.

Important notice
Should there be any damages in spite of proper use, the device has to be sent back to SEBA for
repair. All modifications on electronic components or cables that are beyond the herein
described procedures, must only be conducted by SEBA.
Neglecting this regulation leads to termination of all warranty claims!

12.1 Pressure sensor

The sensor for this parameter requires hardly any maintenance. Dirt residue should be cleaned off. The offset
calibration for the display Water and pressure sensor can be executed in air with software SEBAConfig.

12.2 Temperature sensor

The sensor for this parameter requires hardly any maintenance and cannot be accessed by the user. A
possibility exists to readjust the offset.

12.3 Conductivity electrode

The only required maintenance is the regular cleaning of the electrodes. The following pollutants on the
graphite electrodes can be removed with the listed cleaning solution at room temperature.

Contaminant Detergent
Substances soluble in water Distilled water
Fats and oils in large quantities Warm water and household detergent
Rubbing alcohol (let sit for max. 5 min.)
Lime and hydroxide deposits Acetic acid (10%)

The conductivity measurement cell is fixed in place and can only be replaced by SEBA.

12.4 Drying cartridge

When refilling the drying cartridge, pay attention to the safety data sheet 93/112/EWG according to
EU-regulations. The product KC-Trockenperlen Orange allows a safe control of the drying
procedure. It is especially environmentally friendly as it is free of heavy metal.
Dry cartridges with no color, which are saturated in water, must be changed. The change interval
depends on relative humidity and temperature. The granules can be dried in an oven at 130-160 C
and then re-used or ordered new from SEBA.

Attention
