Learning Experience: Matching Shapes

Programming Purpose: During placement, it has been observed that the teachers encourage the children to practice
their knowledge of shapes and colours during circle. The purpose of this activity is to increase the childrens ability to
identify different colours and shapes.

Objective:

Children will use their memory of past learning experience to correctly identify the colours and shapes presented to
them.

Materials: Modifications:

- Two Coloured Shape Puzzle Boards Stabilize:

Have children sit down on a print out of the same shape


they will be getting from the puzzle board.

Simplify:

Ask the children for the colour instead of the colour and
the shape.
Enhance:

Ask the children to count how many sides their shape
has.

Tweak:

Tell the child the colour and shape and ask them to find
it on the puzzle board.


Opening (Introduction)

-Ms. Emma will invite the children to sit down for circle.

-Ms. Emma will say, Good morning friends! Today we will be playing with shapes!

Body (Content)

- Ms. Emma will hold up a shape and ask each friend what shape it is and what colour it is. (Invitations)
- When the child answers, Ms. Emma will repeat them. Example: Yes youre right, that is a blue square!
(Paraphrase Reflection)
- If the child struggles, Ms. Emma will assist by informing the child of the colour/ shape and then asking them
to repeat.
- Once each child has a coloured shape, Ms. Emma will begin to ask for them all back.
- If you have the blue square, please come and place it back on the puzzle board. (Do-it Signals)
- Ms. Emma will acknowledge when the child has placed the piece back on the puzzle board. Example: Good
job, you found the spot for the blue square!

Closing (Ending)

- My friends did such a good job finding the homes to all of my coloured shapes!
- Ms. Emma will put the puzzle boards back in the drawer.

Transition

- Ms. Emma will turn attention back to the classroom teacher who will explain the activities that have been laid
out on the tables for the program.
- The children will be excused from circle one at a time to participate in program.
