Title: Ferroelectric and Mechanical characterization of PVDF/PMNPT and P(VDF-TrFE)/PMNPT
polymer-ceramic composites.
1/4
Supervisors: Prof. M. S. Ramachandra Rao, Dr. Ratna Kumar Annabattula
Description: Polymer-ceramic composites of PVDF/PMNPT and P(VDF-TrFE)/PMNPT were
prepared to study the effect of Lead Magnesium Niobate-Lead Titanate (PMN-PT) particles on the
mechanical and ferrolectric properties of these polymers. Composites films were drop-casted and
annealed at two temperatures. Enhancement in mechanical properties was observed for composite
films prepared at low temperature, whereas for the films prepared above melting temperature
inclusion of PMNPT particles lead to a reduction in the value of Youngs modulus. Introduction of
PMNPT particles lead to a reduction in the values of remanence and remanent polarisation in both
the polymers.

Physics, IIT Madras.
Title: Effect of Quenching on Morphology and Mechanical properties of Poly(vinylidenefluoride)
(PVDF).
Supervisors: Dr. Dillip K. Sathapathy
Description: This study was aimed at understanding the evolution of morphology and mechanical
behaviour of PVDF films by contrasting properties of quenched films with corresponding films that
were cooled naturally. PVDF films were obtained using spin-coating technique. PVDF films prepared
at different temperatures were quenched in liquid nitrogen. The morphology of quenched films was
found to consist of smaller sized-spherulites as compared to the films cooled naturally. Quenched
films presented enhanced values of Youngs modulus than their naturally cooled counterparts. The
size of spherulites and Youngs modulus turned out to be a strong function of the curing temperature.

Title: Characterisation of Poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene)-Poly(vinylidenefluoride) Blends.
Supervisors: Prof. M. S. Ramachandra Rao, Dr. Dillip K. Sathapathy
Description: The objective was to study the effect of blending P(VDF-TrFE) with PVDF on the
electrical properties and morphology of PVDF. The blends with varying compositions of polymers
were prepared at two temperatures, one above and other well below the melting point of the
polymers. Films of the blends were obtained by drop-casting on a glass slide. We found out that
improvements in crystallinity and remanent polarisation varied with copolymer concentration. Most
enhanced values of remanence and remanent polarisation were obtained for blends prepared at
2/4
higher temperatures. Atleast 50% enhancement in Youngs modulus of blends prepared above the
melting point was observed as compared to blends prepared at low temperature. .

Title: Influence of Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles on dielectric properties of poly(vinylidenefluoride)
(PVDF).
Supervisors: Prof. M. S. Ramachandra Rao, Dr. Dillip K. Sathapathy
Description: Aim of the project was to investigate the influence of CoF e2 O4 nanoparticles on the
dielectric behaviour of PVDF. CoF e2 O4 nanoparticles were prepared via co-precipitation route and
dispersed in polymer matrix. Nanocomposite films were prepared by drop-casting followed by solvent
evaporation. We demonstrated that inclusion of CFO nanoparticles leads to an enhancement of
dielectric constant of polymer. We achieved 47% enhancement in dielectric constant with addition
of 5 wt%. CoF e2 O4 nanoparticles to the polymer. The enhancement of the given process was
discussed in view of the distinctions between the structures of pristine polymer and nanocomposite
samples. The results of this study has been submitted to journal. .
