APAH FLASH CARDS

It is strongly suggested you find 5x7 White Flash Cards in bulk! We will be creating APAH Flash
Cards with every unit throughout the entire year. You need the flashcards and the colored print out
page of the art work & info for the week, with you in class each week. Here is a sample of what the
Flash Card layout:
Side One:
Photo of the work of Art (approx. 3x5 or 4x6)
Unit of Study

Side Two:
Name of the artist
Title of the artwork- sculpture and any 2D works are ALWAYS underlined if hand written.
Architecture is NOT underlined.
Date- When was it created?
Period/Movement- When? Cultural and time reference
Original Location- Where is the original setting? Temple, church, street, domestic space, palace...
Location- Where is it now?
Patron- Did someone pay for this to be created?
Material/Media/Medium- The material is. WHAT it's made of.
Technique- The technique is. HOW it's made.

Additionally- Information about the artwork siting the following... The amount of info will vary
within each category and will depend on the complexity of the artwork itself. APAH Six Points

CONTENT- What can you see? What is the subject matter?


FORM- Finer details. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design, don't just write, "statue"
because that's not helpful at all.
CONTEXT- WHY? What was happening during this time that caused this piece to be
created? Political, Economic, Religious, Social, Intellectual, Art

FUNCTION- What is its purpose? What was it made to be used for, or do?
STYLE- How are you able to tell the artwork can be classified by a particular artist, culture,
period, art movement, etc? Why or how is this work important to the time and culture.
What makes this fit into history?
MEANING- What led up to the creation of this piece? How did this work reflect the ideas
during this time in history, and allow it to be a product of its time? What is the meaning of the
artwork?

Historical Context- WHY? What was happening during this time that caused this piece to be
created? Context can include but is not limited to wars and other current events, the establishment
of a government or ruler, religious beliefs and practices, and major ideas of the time such as
philosophical arguments it mas Meaning and Theme- What is the message of this artwork? What do
we learn from this artwork? What major art historical theme can we connect to this artwork Themes
include: Power and Authority, Government, Violence, The Depiction of the Human Body, Religion
and the Spiritual World, Propaganda, Family and Everyday Life, Marriage and Sex, Race, gender and
Identity, Technology, Nature, Challenging the Establishment, Internal worlds and realities Audience:
Who was it made for and why? Visual / Formal Analysis- What are the distinct visual qualities of this
artwork that stand out (color, shape, composition...)? What are the visual qualities that tell us this
artwork belongs to a particular artist, culture, period, art movement? How does the way this artwork
looks communicate and support its meaning and function?
