# Comments and Suggestions for Course Activities Date

1 The identity web and identity caucus are two stand-outs from the course. Thank you both for your careful, and 10/2/2016 7:54 PM
thoughtful collaboration to make this course as meaningful as it was.

2 I liked how you started moving towards ways for us to hear from whole group. Although it takes more time, I do like 10/1/2016 12:14 PM
hearing what everyone things. Smaller group discussions to sharing a bit in larger group discussions was good. I liked
hearing from Ayo, students, parents -- nice to get different perspectives. The Equity Step is a great idea. It seemed to
me that people weren't quite ready for discussions when we got to the end...? (Maybe an incorrect understanding.)
One idea for the future would be to have use working on it earlier so they are more prepared to really talk about it the
last couple of days. It is hard when they haven't taken the equity class yet...

3 It's really hard for me to remember all of these activities separately and how I would rate them! I had a good 9/28/2016 9:30 AM
experience overall, so anything that stands out is rated differently. The only reason Ayo was rated poorly was because
it was a weird day and was difficult to hear her in a meaningful way on the cellphone speaker. I had my project tuned
last week, which was SUPER helpful. I got lots of great feedback and ideas! Student panel was also excellent.

4 I thought that small group discussions related to things that we had read were effective. I also thought that discussing 9/28/2016 6:22 AM
equity dilemmas in small groups was effective. I feel like the "step" piece of the equity step could have used more
scaffolding or earlier scaffolding, possibly starting with the second class. Doing many interviews at our school earlier
to uncover equity issues (similar to the 300 course) could start narrowing down an area of focus. Also, more examples
of equity steps could be provided.

# Comments and Suggestions to help us better understand your ratings: Date

1 Great course. I really enjoyed it. There wasn't enough time -- though that may always be an issue for something like 10/1/2016 12:14 PM
this... I loved the readings. I liked the forum. I really appreciated the huge amount of time you put in that first week
Sara in responding (I'm guessing school hadn't started yet. :) ). It was helpful to have that as an example of a way to
respond. Time is always the issue... I'd love to have more time to dig into the Forum posts and thoughts, but don't. I
would have loved to get more feedback on my equity step. I feel a little like I am writing it for a void. You had
mentioned publication, but I know by the end folks were overwhelmed by just the step, so publication would seem
totally crazy. Perhaps if we started it earlier we could go there?

2 It was not the activiteis but the air and safety that made the classroom wonderful. 9/28/2016 2:32 PM

3 I had difficulty accessing some readings in a timely manner, which made it difficult to plan out my homework schedule 9/28/2016 9:30 AM
from week to week.

Q3 What were this courses strengths?

What did you find most useful?

1 The student and family panel. 10/2/2016 11:55 PM

2 Due to the sensitive topics of this course, I especially appreciated the strong sense of community and trust that was 10/2/2016 7:54 PM
established from day one. I appreciate the guidance and support of the instructors and the way that our time and
experience was honored.

3 I wrote much of this before... Ultimately, Sara and Juliet, I think you did a great job of creating a strong classroom 10/1/2016 12:14 PM
culture where people were able to say what they felt and feel safe. The conversations were outstanding. I'd like more
of these things.

4 Run well, readings were interesting and big picture. Definitely made me stop and rethink my own beliefs. 10/1/2016 10:33 AM

5 To have raw, open conversations about such a sensitive subject with people that you don't know very well was a 9/28/2016 6:49 PM
unique experience. It helped me to develop listening skills - real listening skills. It was also really interesting to see the
projects that everyone is passionate about and to notice the differences. The readings were really helpful - I had
always wanted to read more on the topics of equity but just didn't have the time. Loved the student panel - thought that
that was great to hear directly from students.

6 What I learned though this course will be scaffolding for my learning afterwards. 9/28/2016 2:32 PM

7 It brought the GSE cohort together in a very intimate way that will be helpful for the rest of the year together. We know 9/28/2016 12:50 PM
each other well and will be better critical friends and colleagues. We now have a strong foundation in equity that we
can build on for the rest of the year.

8 Interpersonal experiences related to the course topics helped make the readings and content more meaningful. Really 9/28/2016 9:30 AM
wonderful facilitation of a respectful, safe environment for sharing.

9 I think the readings were great. Diverse set of topics. The students and parent panels were great. Doing deeper dives 9/28/2016 6:22 AM
into a few articles was great. The identity caucuses was probably my favorite activity.

Q4 What were this courses weaknesses?

1 Highlight/state the purpose overall goal for class activities. They all were great but it would be helpful to know exactly 10/2/2016 11:55 PM
what instructors hope for us to get out of each activity.

2 I would have benefitted from more quiet reflection journaling time. I very much enjoyed this time when it was offered. 10/2/2016 7:54 PM

10 / 11
HTH 205: Equity, Diversity and Design 2016
3 I guess I'd mostly work on making the equity step project super effective. Maybe people start thinking about this 10/1/2016 12:14 PM
earlier? I'd love more response to this?

4 I would have loved to look into the readings and do some more socratic seminar type discussions, though I 10/1/2016 10:33 AM
appreciated the variation in discussing practices.

5 The equity step even though it was explained early on, feels really rushed and therefore not authentic. I feel like Im 9/28/2016 6:49 PM
doing something to make sure that I have a paper submitted, but feel that its too early in the year to really be able to
make a meaningful impact. Perhaps, having the topic later in the year? Or having the research part now and then the
step later in the year?

6 No weakness sticking out. 9/28/2016 2:32 PM

7 There were some weeks where we did not explicitly connect to the readings in class. I appreciated most of the 9/28/2016 12:50 PM
readings, so maybe it wasn't necessary for "motivation" but there were a few times that I wished we dove into the
readings more.

8 Some organizational pieces, like having access to readings well before due dates. 9/28/2016 9:30 AM

9 The equity step piece felt removed from most of the work in the course. We were asked to do a couple of interviews 9/28/2016 6:22 AM
and then take an initiative on an equity issue, but this felt inauthentic to me to try to "fix" equity at my school
considering I just got there. Most of us were just getting used to our settings which makes it difficult to implement a
solution to an authentic problem. I think some action is better than no action, but I think that differentiating between
residents and teachers and people who are new to their schools with regards to what different steps would be helpful.
I also think the identity caucuses activity should be expanded to more than one class. For many of us, this is the one
place where we can have deep discussions about things that are rarely discussed, so I think the activities that allow us
to have the deepest discussions should be the ones that fill out more of the course agendas.

Q5 What other ideas do you have for

improving your learning experiences in the
program this year?
Answered: 4 Skipped: 7

# Responses Date

1 I would love to start the equity step and critique/revision of ideas far earlier. I struggled to nail down an idea, and then 10/1/2016 10:33 AM
having our first draft on the last class seemed a bit rushed. I would have loved to have more time to figure out what
that step looked like, and a bit more feedback on the step itself.

2 The room in international just wasn't working for me. It was so crowded and I had a hard time really focusing. I also felt 9/28/2016 6:49 PM
that I couldve used more peer review time for the step project. The parents panel didn't feel as useful as the students
panel.

3 This helped me realize the importance in making myself vulnerable to facilitate important and difficult conversations 9/28/2016 9:30 AM
with others.

4 It feels that equity work to me is something that should happen throughout the year. I feel like whatever equity issue 9/28/2016 6:22 AM
we are passionate about, we should continue to work on it in some structured way throughout the year. Maybe it's a
monthly check in with another GSE student on our progress. Something to keep the work and the conversations going.
