These are really three depictions of the same model.

A wave packet comes from the left, representing a momentum wave, which is
localized in space. A reasonable 1-D representation of such a wave would be Aeikx.

Notice how, when we approach the barrier, an oscillatory form is observed in a


region where the original wave Aeikx overlaps with a reflected wave moving in the
opposite direction: Be-ikx. The oscillation occurs because together the two waves
approximate a sinusoidal type of function and temporarily appear to set up a
standing wave.

Note how there is no oscillation away from the barrier, as there is only a single
wave at that point.
