CHAPTER 1

Introduction

1.1. Problem and its Background

Gender discrimination is an attitude or action decision taken with bias towards


individuals on the basis of their gender. Discrimination based on gender (or sex) is a
common civil rights violation that takes many forms including sexual harassments,
pregnancy discrimination, and equal pay for women who do the same jobs as men. The
women and girls are neglected segment of our society, and violence and discrimination
against women and girl exist worldwide. The main root cause of gender discrimination is
hunger and poverty. The majority of economically poor women and girls differ life time
marginalization.

This kind of discrimination usually occurs when a women is not given her due
right just because she is women or a man is assumed to do something only because of
his traditional role as a man and not his merit us or capabilities. Due to poor rights
awareness, many worlds most impoverished women are confined to their households.
They lack mobility and freedom of association and have no opportunity to learn this
rights and and take action to improve their lives and those of their family members.

Women and girls are powerful tools to increase development effectiveness. They
contribute directly to poverty alleviation, economic growth, reduced gender based
violence, stronger community institution, increased health and well-being and better
governance.

Thus, this study will explore the perception of selected new lucena national
comprehensive high school students on gender discrimination issue in New lucena
Iloilo.
1.2. Objectives of the study

The main purpose of this proposed study is to determine the perception of


selected New Lucena National Comprehensive High School student on gender
discrimination issue Specifically this study attempts to determine the research
objectives;

What is the level of perception..

What is the significant difference of level of perception of New lucena


national comprehensive high school students when classified according to
gender and grade level?

What are proposed programs to be implemented to address the issue?

1.3 Hypotheses

Based on forgiving research questions, the full null hypothesis is here by


presented.

There is no significant difference of level of perception of new lucena


national comprehensive high school student when classified according to
gender discrimination.
1.4 Importance of the study

The purpose of this study is to give a brief overview regarding the topic matter
which concerns gender discrimination. To give value and importance by giving equality
and fair justification to the victim of gender discrimination especially in student on
gender discrimination related issues. The respondent which is student will be beneficial
because of this study that may provide information on gender discrimination related
issues. As this study enhance the knowledge of the student to be aware of gender
discrimination related issues.

1.5 Scope and Delimitation

This study focused to explore the perception of selected New Lucena National
Comprehensive High School students on gender discrimination. This will also look into
formulation of school initiated interventions program to be recommended. The
respondent will be the selected New Lucena National High School students of New
Lucena, Iloilo . Data will be collected between February to March 2017.

Reseacrh questionnaire, that determine the perception of selected NLNCHS


students on gender discrimination related issues. And eventually, as a means to
enhance student knowledge regarding gender discrimination. This study will be
conducted in New Lucena National Comprehensive High School January to February.

The illustration above states that the perception of selected New lucena National
Comprehensive High School student depend to the gender discrimination. The
perception of selected NLNCHS students provide prevention program for this gender
discrimination related issues.

1.8 Definition of terms

PERCEPTION The way you think about or understand someone or something.

GENDER - The state of being male or female.

DISCRIMINATION- The practice of being unfairly treating a person or group of people


or groups of people or the ability to recognize the difference between things that are of
good quality and those that are not.
INEQUALITY- An unfair situation in which some people have more rights or better
oppurtunities than other people.

Methodology

3.1 Research design

In order to satisfy the objectives of the research problem, a qualitative and


quantitative method will be held to explore the perception of selected New lucena
national comprehensive high school .This study also uses survey, which is an
investigation to discover the perception of selected NLNCHS students on gender
discrimination. This study will be between January and March 2017.

3.2 Population

The population will be consisted of 300 students in New Lucena National


Comprehensive High School , New Lucena, Iloilo. Data will be collected between
January to March 2017. After reading a description of the study, participants will be
asked for a passive content before proceeding to complete the survey.

3.3 Research Instrument

This study will use research made questionnaire for collection of data. The
questionnaire will specifically assign to accomplish the study.
3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

The research made questionnaire by the researchers will be checked by the

research adviser to ensure the validity of the responses it would elicit.

Permit to conduct the survey will be secured a letter requesting permission of the

requested proper authorities. The retrieved data collected will be tested in the following

manner.

When the interview is already done, the next step is the respondents that will

complete the questionnaire provided by the researchers. It consists information

regarding gender discrimination NLNCHS offered.

As a result, the information can be better used for preventing the gender

discrimination, and to be aware to gender discrimination nowadays and data collected is

expected to facilitate.
