why do we need high adhesion strength between hoses cover/liner with
jacket
What is adehsion test
Video on how to do adhesion test
Adhesion Strength
If adhesion strength between hose cover or liner with jacket is not strong,
the delamination problem will happen easily.
If adhesion strength between hose cover or liner with jacket is not strong,
some small broken on the hose cover can cause peeling a wide portion
of hoses cover.
If adhesion strength is strong, small broken on the hose covers won't
influence the other portion of hoses cover. The hoses can last much
longer time.
The strength of naked polyester jacket exposed in the air decrease
quickly. therefore, naked polyester jacket cause the decrease of working
pressure of hoses
Naked jackets also could be deteriorated quickly
Adhesion Strength
If adhesion strength between hose liner with jacket is not strong, the
delamination problem will happen easily. Then delaminated liner can jam
pumps.
Some fire departments experienced these kind of problems with even 4 and 5
supply hoses.
This is also the reason why fire departments only use through-the-weave NBR or
PU hoses.
The bigger size of PU or NBR hoses, the more important the adhesion
strength is for hoses in oil field.
12 PU hoses or NBR hoses are very heavy. The movement of 12 hoses in use
could be more easy to damage the cover of PU or NBR hoses. Then further
delamination or deterioration will happen more easily.
what is Adhesion test
Adhesion tested is required by different hoses standard in the world, including
ISO 8033:2006, NFPA 1961, BS6391, FM2111, UL19, EN14540, and DIN 14811
etc.
For large diameter PU hoses or NBR layflat hoses, ISO 8033:2006 standard is
recommended to be follow. Then you can compare the adhesion strength of the
large diameter hoses from different companies just by figures.
Adhesion test method defined by ISO8033:2006
get a PU hoses or NBR hoses strip (one inch wide or 25mm).
use machine to test the average strength figure which is required when peeling the PU or
NBR cover at speed 25mm per minute
Unit of adhesion test: N/25mm or N/inch
Adhesion Strength
The adhesion strength of brandly new hoses is important. Most of
people just pay attention to adhesion strength of brandly new hoses
including manufacturers.
The adhesion strength of used hoses is also very important and
should be paid important attention by end-users and distributors.
The adhesion of some 3-ply hoses can dramastically decrease after the hoses are
used in humid environment. 3-ply PU or NBR hoses uses ester-based PU
adhesive to glue the cover and tube with jacket. but ester-based PU adhesive will
be damaged by humid which enter jackets through pin-holes which is necessary
for 3-ply hoses. (Ester-based PU performs badly in water-resistance, please refer
to BASF, Lubrizol, and other PU materials manufacturers)
Adhesion Strength- Cooking-Hose Test

The end-users or distributors can do a cooking-hose test. Namely, end-users or

distributors can put the hoses in hot water (160 F or 71 C degrees) for 72
hours. then end-users or distributors can test the adhesion of hoses cover with
jacket every 24 hours. the adhesion of hoses decrease dramastically during
72 hours. The adhesion decreased at least 50%.

Cooking-hose test is to simulate operating environment by a speeding mode

Adhesion Strength
Through-the-weave PU hoses have no pin-holes on cover or no glues between
jackets and cover. The adhesion strength has no change after cooking-test
Through-the-weave NBR hoses has no glue between jackets and cover, the
adhesion strength has very little change after cooking test. Theoretically the
bursting pressure and adhesion strength will be changed with time going.
The jackets of through-the-weave PU hoses are imbedded in PU and completely
covered by PU. The jacket is protected completed against humid. Through-the-
weave PU hoses can last longer than through-the-weave NBR hoses, 3-ply
PU hoses or 3-ply NBR hoses in oil fields.
Adhesion strength required for different
application
Asoe recommend the following minimum figures:
Adhesion strength for 10 layflat hoses in oilfield: >100N/25mm
Adhesion strength for 12 layflat hoses in oilfield: >120N/25mm
Adhesion strength for mainline hoses in agricultural manure transfer:
>120N/25mm
Adhesion strength for drag hoses in agricultural manure transfer:
>160N/25mm
The above adhesion requirement are for both new hoses and used hoses.
The higher adhesion strength, the better
