III. PRESENTING PROBLEM


Gersmith was a victim of sexual abuse (incest case). She is a victim survivor of sexual
abuse perpetrated by her father. She runs away because of her father abusiveness. She becomes
quiet, irritated and lost her trust to anyone else. As she entered in the center she experienced the
feeling of nervous and worry especially that its not easy for her to adjust to the new people and
environment. She is sometimes lost her concentration and lack of self-control/emotion because of her
bad experiences.

IV. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

A. CLIENT

Gersmith is a 12 years old. She was born in November 6, 2003. Youngest child of Victorino
and Beatriz. She is quiet, smart and generous. Gersmith is pretty, healthy, short, blonde hair, and fair
skin. Her height is 4 feet 8 inches tall and weighed is 47 kilos. She is four months pregnant and
accepted her situation. Sometimes she gets lazy especially that she is pregnant. At first she is quiet
and gives limited information. But later, she feels more comfortable and became more expressive and
willing to participate in every activity conducted.

She is participating and diligent to her studies. She loves mathematics and science subject.
Gersmith knows beauty culture like manicure, pedicure and hair spa. She also has a skill in rug
making which she learned from the Practical Skills Development or PSD. Accordingly, Gersmith has
limited experiences in doing household chores.
She is choosy in choosing a friend whom she can trust. Gersmith has limited friends. She
is frank but easily hurt.
Every time Gersmith remember her past/bad experiences she lost her concentration and
becomes distracted. Her self-focus sometimes affects her performance, studies, and even to her
mind-set. Gersmith sometimes also cannot control her anger particularly when she express or show
her some attitudes like frank, snubbing and oppose verbally.

B. FAMILY
Gersmith parents are married. She is the daughter of Victorino and Beatriz. She has a
brother named James. They have a simple life. Her family religion is a Philipinista or Philippine
Benevolent Missionary Association, a type of religion where their faith is more believing in a Saint
who having a different devotion and belief. Gersmith and her brother are really close to each other.
Her brother James is the person who gives strength and positive life to her. Gersmith mother is caring
person, concern and does everything for her children. Her mother is selling vegetables just to support
her family. Her mother works as a farm caretaker which distant from their house. Her mother Beatriz
is submissive to her husband. Her mother does not give importance in the incident and does not
believe to her.
Accordingly, her father was a caring and understanding person before. Her father left them
when she was 5 years old. But last year 2015 (Gersmith is already 11 years old) her family decided to
live again together. For how many years they separated, her father has suddenly changed. The father
of Gersmith was inadequate in terms of time and support to his own family. Her father stops her in her
schooling. Her father Victorino is really strict. He did not allow Gersmith to go to the town or even
having friends. Their father-daughter relationship becomes nothing especially when her father started
to abuse her. Her father forgets his responsibilities and role as a father to his family, especially to her
daughter. Her father is also abusive and immoral to abuse his own daughter.

C. ENVIRONMENT
Gersmith lived most of her life in Loreto Dinagat Surigao Del Norte. They have a simple life.
Their house is near from the sea. She has lot classmates there. When she was 5 years old her father
went to Pantukan Compostela Valley to find a better work and lived there. After 6 years (Gersmith
was already 11 years old) her mother and brother decided to went to Pantukan Compostela Valley to
follow and lived there together with her father. They live in remote area. The environment is an
agricultural; rich in coconuts, corns, bamboos, palm, mangoes, and other fruit trees. They have
limited friends and most of them are members of PBMA. Their house is big and made of light
materials like bamboo with 3 rooms. They dont own the land where they live; they just serve as a
farm caretaker in that place. The area is far from the town that takes for almost 40 minutes walking
before you reach the town. The means of transportation is the motorcycle, and where few people can
afford to pay transportation. They lived in a place where called Sittio they dont have a hospital or
health center. Their place has a small chapel and few have a small store.
After she run away from their house Gersmith was referred to the custody of DSWD- Home
for Girls and Women here in Davao City. The DSWD-Home for Girls and Women is a residential care
facility of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Field Office XI, Davao City for
Girls and Women in Need of Special Protection. The center provides social services, home life,
educational, health/medical, livelihood services, spiritual enrichment, and community participation.
The DSWD-Home for Girls and Women is located in urban area. The center gives an
opportunity for those who are in need of special protection and have a temporary shelter. The center
teaches good discipline and rules or psycho social intervention. The centers environment is peaceful,
clean, and complete in terms of physiological needs and safety/security. There are rooms, multi-
purpose area, PSD room, counseling room and etc. The center has a big impact to Gersmith life.
This is the place where she finally feels her freedom. The house parents inside the center serve as
her second mother, and social workers who help her case. Gersmith has new friends in the center.
She feels contented living there. Last month of June, the center started to have an In-house schooling
where Gersmith is currently enrolled. Its providing an opportunity for those residents to learn again.
The service helps a lot to her who is really pursuing her study. Their school is peaceful, the room
space is big, safe, and limited student. She cooperate and active.

V. CASE

Gersmith is a victim of sexual abuse by her father. When Gersmith father reunited with his
family her life started to become miserable. One day, Gersmith was left alone with her father in their
house; her father took advantage and sexually abused her. Gersmith tries to defend herself but she
cant because her father is more powerful than her. Gersmith cried of what happened to her. The
most painful part was after the abuse her father denying for what he did. Her father keeps telling that
the one who abused her was the spirit who holds or possesses his body. After her father abused her
she becomes quiet, she almost loss her trust to any anyone else. She keeps it by herself for how
many weeks. Many times she tried to tell the truth and ask help from her mother but she was afraid.
One day she cannot take being silent and keep all abuses she had from her father. So Gersmith
disclose to her mother, but then her mother refuses to help and doesnt believe on her. She got angry,
feel regret, and hurt. She cannot believe that her own mother would refuse to help her.

Gersmith endure the pain and keeps all the violence she had from her father. She was not
able to tell anyone because she is afraid that no one can believe her statement just like what her
mother did to her. Weeks passed her father repeated abusing her. He continues to persist and
abused her. She didnt know what to do because no one knows about her situation. Only her father
and mother know about it, yet they ignored her. After 4 months of repeated incident Gersmith did not
know that she got pregnant. She was stressed and feeling down at that time that causes her baby
died inside her tummy. Accordingly, her father abuses her infrequently. Sometime in March 2016
Gersmith decided to escape from their house by the help of her friend named Balang and Mommy
Mama Juliet (the employer of her parents). Juliet brought her in the church in Pantukan. The case
was referred to MSWDO, Pantukan for psycho-social intervention. After 2 weeks of processing the
documents then she was referred to DSWD- Home for Girls and Women for protective custody.

V. ASSESSMENT

Gersmith was a victim of sexual abuse (incest case). She runs away from home because
of the incident. She becomes quiet, irritated and lost her trust to anyone else. As she entered in the
center she experienced the feeling of nervous and worry especially that its not easy for her to adjust
to the new people and environment. She is sometimes lost her concentration and lack of self-
control/emotion because of her bad experiences. She sometime cannot control her anger particularly
when she express or show her some attitudes like frank, snubbing and oppose verbally.

She is smart girl. She is positive in understanding her condition. She has a potential when
it comes to her learning skills. Her way of strength is her brother James, her baby and her Mommy
Mama Juliet who is willing to help and support her. She became strong person, positive
understanding and enlighten from her situation by the help and the things that she learned from the
center. She also become close to God that help her to maintain her good attitudes and good
discipline. All of the resources that she needed are available here inside the center. They have a
programs and services which may help to develop persons strength and capabilities.

According to Karls and Wandrei Social Functioning Theory is a clients ability to accomplish
the activities necessary for daily living, and to fulfill major social roles required by a particular
subculture or community.

VII. PLAN INTERVENTION:


GOALS:
At the end of 6 weeks (August 22- September 30, 2016), She will be able to develop her self-
concentration, i.e., she will be able to manage her emotions and have self-control.

VIII. EVALUATION:
Periodic evaluation has been done as part of monitoring. The working intervention between
social work intern and the client was done through the cooperation of the client. The goal in the
intervention plan has been achieved and has a positive result. For six weeks, Gersmiths self-
concentration has been reached: the client has become more aware of her actions; is able
limit/control those stimuli that provoke undesirable behaviors (inability to control anger); has develop
positive in dealing with situations that used to provoke her to emotions like anger. However, she
would still need monitoring as he tries out her set of skills in the center.

IX. TERMINATION

Termination is not possible especially that the Goal between social worker intern and the
client has been reached. The client has already a self-concentration and she can also control her
emotions. The client will be referred to the case manager of the center for further monitoring and
maintain her improvements because the social worker intern will no longer be able to continue
working the client.

X. RECOMMENDATION:

The client will continue staying in the center and avail the programs and services until she
reunite to her family.
