BEYOND-THE-BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS

Name: Brenda Staton

Grade Level: Second Grade
Content Area: Life Science
Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tool Used: Inspiration 9
Standards Addressed:
S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms.
a. Determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as a
cat or dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an
insect such as a butterfly.
b. Investigate the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed and by recording changes
over a period of time

ISTE Standard:
3. Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce
creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Description of how to implement in the class:
Students will begin by learning the different types of life cycles of various organisms. We will discuss
and learn the different stages and compare them together in class. Upon investigating the life cycles
of a frog, butterfly, and a plant, we will begin to organize these similarities and differences. Using the
Inspiration Tool, as our template, we will organize the three different organisms and their stages. We
will begin by separating out the categories of a plant, butterfly, and frog on the template. Students
will engage in helping to complete the model by naming the different stages as we enter them
together. By grouping students, they can work together to form one model of one of the organisms of
their choice and input the data in their own template. These charts will then be shared with the
overall class. Once we complete the overall chart, a finished product will be given to the students for
them to add to their science notebooks for study.

This Beyond the Basic Productivity Tool will be helpful in teaching students how to organize their
data into a model template and use for study. Students will have a more visual and creative resource
to help them understand the various stages of organisms. By using this tool, they will be able to
easily organize important facts in one location and learn how to create templates that are helpful in
their learning.

Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): .

This level of technology utilizes a LoTi level 3. Students are using a higher level of thinking by
evaluating information and learning to utilize technology that will produce a product that they can
use. By working with their peers, they are sharing information together and producing a model that
will be useful to them.
Description of the sample BBPT file provided *:
Listed below, you will find a template that covers the three various stages of organisms that we will
be studying. This model defines the various stages of the life cycles. Videos and informational tools

are linked for reference within the template. Children will help complete this template using the
Inspiration 9 tool. They will then use this same BBPT to choose one of the organisms they prefer and
create one together within their groups. This will give them more practice in using BBPTs and help
them create a finished product for study.
Other comments about your proposed BBPT Activity:
This template was created by me for the purpose of this lesson. Other topics are available with pre-
made templates that students could use on many other topics. This Web has a wealth of resources
for many uses.
