locations (where relevant). This is not a comprehensive list of testable material, but it should get
you started.

Sample longer essay questions:

* Discuss the development of the motet from the 13th to the 16th centuries. Cite and discuss relevant
examples from your listening assignment. Be sure to address issues of form, structure, and function.
* What is a Paraphrase (or Cantus firmus or Parody or Freely-composed) Mass? How is it constructed?
Cite and discuss a specific example from your listening assignment.
* What were the Rhythmic Modes? Why were they necessary? When did they fall out of fashion?
Why did they become obsolete?
* Compare and contrast the various types of Medieval secular musicians. From what social classes did
they come? What sort of music did they write? What forms did they employ? Cite specific
composers and musical examples (where available).
* Discuss Martin Luthers role in the Protestant Reformation. In what ways did he seek to transform
the perceived injustices of the Catholic Church? What was the Catholic response? How did both sides
perceive musics role in the worship? Give examples.
* Discuss Italian and English Madrigals. When did they appear? What were they about? How were
they structured? Discuss a representative example of each from your listening assignment.
