Try to write a haiku on a favourite book (not necessarily STP) without giving the

title. (I'm sure you're all aware that a haiku is a three-line verse, each line
consisting of five, seven, and five syllables respectively.) Heres one for starters:-
The Teachings of Om:-
One: be kind to tortoises
Two: Think for yourself.

Xue Baochai Kevin were you already addicted to haiku? Or have I started you
down the dreadful path to obsessive syllable counting?

Kevin Kirby This occasionally crops up with some old friends. In the middle of
any given topic a Haiku-Off can start

Xue Baochai Yes, that sometimes happens within my family.

Jane Williams Haiku addiction?

Who would find that a problem?
I admit nothing smile emoticon:)

David Crook Doesn't quite scan right....

The teachings of Om:-

be kind to all tortoises
Come out of your shell.

Xue Baochai follows the five -seven-five rule.

David Crook Yeah, It's logical, meaningful and quite good but the necessary
pauses after the one and the two break-up the flow..

Xue Baochai I see what you mean. How about we combine the two? The
teachings of Om:-
Be kind to all tortoises
And think for yourself.

Xue Baochai I like your first two lines, and while the pun in the third line is
good, I don't feel it was really part of Om's philosophy. Brutha does of course
"come out of his shell" but it's more coincidental.
David Crook That's it, i think. imo, it's good to keep refining it.

David Crook I overlooked a simple "and"

Xue Baochai Definitely. This is the first time I've been able to do this with
someone outside my family. I am really enjoying this thread - hope everyone else
is!

David Crook Bedtime now. I expect a good read when I wake up tomorrow.
Looking good so far.

thought of doing this although I enjoy reading them.

Xue Baochai I agree with Jane Williams, that is a good one Mareile Bowditch.
Glad you're enjoying this. But be warned, it IS addictive! If you like this sort of
thing, try and get hold of David Bader's "100 World famous books in haiku "

Mareile Bowditch I will look our for that. Definitely hooked. smile emoticon:)
