USER'S MANUAL
Safety aspects

2.1 Cautions

The system has not been designed to be used in presence of vapours,

anaesthetic mixtures that are flammable with air, or oxygen or nitrous
oxide.
Ensure that water or other liquids do not get into the machine so as to
prevent short-circuits and corrosion.
Always disconnect from mains before cleaning the machine.
Persons authorised to perform radiography examinations must comply
with the regulations for protection against ionising radiation.
To protect from diffused radiation the patients part closed to the ones to
be exposed use, where necessary, the dedicated accessory such as lead-
sealed aprons.
Only the patient must be present in the room during the execution of the
radiography examination. If the examination should required it ,operator
and authorised personnel may remain in the room only if dedication
protection against X-ray are used (lead-sealed aprons).
All movements are monitored by a sophisticated electronic
microprocessor controlled system. Speed, position, starting and stopping
of such movements are controlled and managed by the logic of the
device. In this logic, the safety aspects are maximised in order to ensure
the safety of both patient and operator. Nevertheless, the operator must
take the maximum care when a movement is in progress. The red
emergency buttons on both control console and on the front part of the
table can be pressed in case a dangerous situation should appear.
These emergency buttons immediately stop any movement and function
of the device, and represent a further safety mean in addition to the
intrinsic safety functions of the device.
Before activating motorised parts of the unit such as tilting, table
top, pendulation, check that the patient is properly laying on the
table top and that both legs and arms are within the outline of the
table top itself. When possible, use the handles. During the activation
of motorised movements, make sure that no objects are interfering with
the movement itself. Pay attention to the people eventually present in the
radiological room.
Although the Mercury 332 has been designed to have a reasonable
degree of protection from electromagnetic interference, it must be
installed at a certain distance from electricity transformer rooms, static
continuity unit, portable two-way hand radios and cellular phones. The
latter may only be used at a distance of over 1.5 meters from all element
of the machine.
All instruments or equipment for professional use and used near the
machine must be in conformance to the electromagnetic compatibility
standards.

(Rev. 3) 3 MERCURY 332

USER'S MANUAL
Safety aspects

Non conforming instruments whose low immunity to electromagnetic

fields is known must be installed at lest 3 meters away from the
Mercury 332 and be powered via an independent electric line.
Mercury 332 cannot be installed in operating rooms.
Mercury 332 must be switched off during the entire period of use of
ESU units or similar equipment.
Clean and disinfect, if necessary, the parts that may come in touch with
the patient.

2.2 Environment and disposal risks

A number of machine parts contain materials and liquids that upon

completion of the machines life cycle must be disposed of at recovery
centres established by the local health units.
The machine contains the following materials and/or components:
Motoriduttori: lubricant oil, steel, aluminium
Motors: iron, copper casings of non-biodegradable plastic material
Electrical cabinet: iron, aluminium, copper, non-biodegradable

5 PRELIMINARY OPERATION

5.1 Switching on and off

The Mercury 332 on switch is determined by the kind of connections

found in the radiology room.

Reversing the turning on operation will turn it off.

It is possible to shut down all Mercury 332 functions, and all functions
connected to it electrically in the room, by using the emergency switch
located on the side of the seriograph and on the command console.

MERCURY 332 18 (Rev. 3)

USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operation

5.2 Patient positioning

The patient positioning on Mercury 332 is simplify thanks to a floor fix

foot rest connected to the unit base. For the examination with patient in
vertical position the controls positioned on the unit allow to move the
stand directly. In this case the patient will use the foot rest fixed on table
top rails.
The foot-rest can stay in working position at all times without affecting
the movement, operation or capability of the Mercury 332.

The foot rest is fixed on table top rails. Use 4 knobs (2 buttons under
handle foot rest and 2 knobs on the foot rest lateral side) to shift or
remove the foot rest on table top.
By pushing on the 2 buttons and with handle it is possible to shift the
foot rest along the rails where fixing points are present.
To remove the foot rest from the rails press at the same time the 4 knobs
and shift out of the rails.

The foot rest can, for examinations requiring it, also be mounted on the
head side (head side meaning the left side of the unit when seen from
the front).

WARNING:
, Before activating motorised parts, such as tilting, table top, angulation,
check that the patient is properly laying on the table top and with legs
and arms with in out line of the table top itself.

The fine patient centering on central X-ray beam will be done thanks to
the Joysticks mounted on control desk or by the pushbuttons of TSO
(table side operation) as explained on chapter 6.

(Rev. 3) 19 MERCURY 332

USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operation

5.3 Preparation of a test

The Mercury 332 allows the execution of tests with different

methodologies:
Seriographies
Tomographies
Digital
Free Selection

5.3.1 Seriographies

This type of test requires the use of the seriograph and the tube-
collimator unit must be centered on the seriograph.
All operations pertaining to this type of test are described in chapter 7.
The cassette loading into the seriograph can be carried out when the
carriage is in the outside position.

Cassette loading
1. Put the cassette back edge onto the back jaw and push the
cassette into A direction.
2. When the cassette front edge is inside the front jaw, put the
cassette onto the carriage following B direction.
The spring of the back jaw will position the cassette in the
transverse direction.
3. Push key 57 to place the carriage inside the seriograph. During
the entrance movement the side jaws will carry the cassette to
the centre of the carriage.

Figure 2

MERCURY 332 20 (Rev. 3)

USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operation

Cassette unloading
1. Push the cassette into A direction until releasing it from the
front jaw.
2. Lift the cassette following B direction. The spring will facilitate
the cassette unloading by pushing on the back jaw.

Figure 3

5.3.2 Tomographies

This type of test is available thanks to the combination of a sophisticated

mechanical and electronic system integrated into the Mercury 332.
The tomographic movement is carried out according to the arc-flat
methodology, at SID fixed length (SID) equal to 114 cm.
Four angles are available, each of them with two different speeds.
All operations pertaining to this type of test are described in chapter 6.

5.3.3 Digital

The execution of digital tests is possible only if an equipment for digital

images is available.
All operations pertaining to this type of test are described in detail in
paragraph 6.11.

(Rev. 3) 21 MERCURY 332

USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operation

5.3.4 Free selection

Tests can be carried out by using accessories outside the Mercury 332,
such as, for instance, Teleradiographs or cassettes directly in contact
with patients.
In this case it will be necessary to rotate the tube-collimator unit until a
non-centered position on the seriograph is reached.
In this case Scopy, Preparation and X-rays controls of the spot film
device are not allowed.
It will therefore be necessary to select the "direct working position" on
the generator. However, preparation and X-ray commands on the foot
switch are active.
To rotate the tube-collimator unit, act on A release lever placed in the
lower part of the tube-carrying arm.

Figure 4

The following angle shots will be possible for the unit thanks to some
mechanical retainers:
+40 , +50, +90, 180, -90, -50 and -40
with respect to the 0 position (centering on seriograph).
These fixed angle shots allow the angle complementarity according to the
angle shots of the column.
All operations pertaining to this type of test are described in chapter 6.

6.1.3 Manual collimator

Function
Manual mode collimator.

Application
The manual mode collimator allows the execution of tests even with
cassettes not positioned in the seriograph ( working position out of
seriograph). As a matter of fact this mode will allow projections on
Teleradiographs , if any, or on cassettes directly in contact with the
patient.

Working conditions
The functioning of the collimator in this modality is here after
described:
When no program is selected and the fluoro command is non
active, the joysticks allow to collimate a format between the
minimum and the maximum.
During this limitation, the limiters inside the spot film device
follow the base jaws of the collimator.
When the scopy command is active instead, the maximum
available format is the one determined by the I.I. selected.
If a program whose format is smaller than the I.I. selected is
chosen, the collimator is positioned on the maximum available
format division. Then, using the joysticks, it will be possible to
collimate any format between the minimum and the division
format. This condition is valid either with the fluoro command
active or non active.
If a further reduction is requested, the internal limiters of the
spot film device follow the base jaws of the collimator, unless the
cross division is selected.

MERCURY 332 26 (Rev. 3)

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

If a program whose format is bigger than the I.I. selected is

chosen, when the fluoro command is non active the joysticks
allow to position the jaws on formats included between the
minimum and the format selected.
When the fluoro command is active instead, the maximum
available format is the one of the I.I. field selected.
The manual function led on the control console, is always lit
either with the fluoro command active and non active.
Pressing the fluoro command when the collimator is set on
positions bigger than the I.I. field selected, the jaws will be
brought to the I.I. format.
When releasing the fluoro command, the jaws will be reset to the
position selected before the fluoro command was activated.
In any moment, it is possible to select the automatic functioning
mode of the collimator. Both the jaws will set to the selected I.I.
field.
If the unit is switched off with the manual functioning mode of
the collimator selected, at the next switch on the collimator will
be set in automatic mode.

Non-working conditions
The manual mode cannot be applied when:
Digital is selected
Scopy is active.

6.1.4 Automatic collimator

Function
Automatic mode collimator.

Application
The automatic mode collimator allows the execution of tests on
cassettes positioned in the seriograph. Throughout the exposure the
jaw positioning will always be equal to the size of the selected
division.

Working conditions
The functioning of the collimator in this modality is here after
described:
When no program is selected the joysticks allow to collimate a
format between the set I.I. field and the minimum.
During this limitation, the internal limiters of the spot film device
follow the base jaws of the collimator.
If a program whose format is smaller than the selected I.I. field is
chosen, the collimator is positioned on the maximum available
format division. Then, using the joysticks, it will be possible to
collimate any format between the minimum and the division
format.
If a further reduction is requested, the internal limiters of the
spot film device follow the base jaws of the collimator, unless the
cross division is selected.

6.7 Tomography

The Mercury 332 is designed to carry out Tomographies both in

seriograph mode and in digital mode. Here below are the functions of the
keys composing the TOMO section in the control panel.

(Rev. 3) 41 MERCURY 332

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

6.7.1 Setting of the Tomographic functions

Function
Tomographic function entrance /exit.

Application
This key is used for the tomographic function entrance/exit. The
action of this key is coupled with joystick 45 (Figure 6) downward.

Working conditions
Tomography entrance:
By pushing key 19 the relevant led starts flashing with slow
frequency showing that the tomographic function has been
booked.
By acting on joystick 45 downward, the equipment is prepared to
the tomographic function. This action creates some movements
(which are blocked when the joystick is released) if the positions
of the different elements of the equipment are not within the
allowed range. Considering the above the following movements
can be activated towards the indicated positions:
compressor re-entry in park position
SID at 1140
centering a 0 column
80 mm layer height
scanning re-entry in the tomography limits.
When all the positions have been reached, led 19 is lit
continuously and an acoustic signal indicates the completion of
the tomographic positioning.

During the tomographic function:

It may occur that the execution of a tomography or of a
tomographic Test (36 - Figure 6) are aborted. In this case the
leds relevant to the set speed and layer flash advising the
operator that the equipment is not ready for another
tomography.
Act on joystick 45 (Figure 6) -downward to restore hunting to 0
position.
When the position is achieved the leds are lit continuously
advising the operator that the tomographic positioning has been
completed.

MERCURY 332 42 (Rev. 3)

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

If the equipment has been designed in such a way that the

carriage tomographic range can vary according to the set angle
and layer height, it may occur that by modifying one of these
two parameters, the carriage position is no longer within the
collision safety limits.
In this situation led 19 flashes with slow frequency advising the
operator that the seriograph-tube carriage must be taken back
within the foreseen range. To do so it is possible to activate both
joystick 44 (Figure 6) in the suitable direction or joystick 45
downward. When the carriage position is within the allowed
limits, led 19 returns to be lit continuously.

Exit from Tomography:

It is possible to exit from the tomographic function only when led
19 and the angle speed leds are lit continuously.
Push key 19, the relevant led starts flashing with fast frequency
indicating the booking of the exit from the tomographic function
to the operator.
By acting on joystick 45 downward it is possible to obtain the
return of the layer height to film level and the FFL to 1000 mm.
These movements are stopped if joystick 45 is released.
Only at the positioning completion, led 19 turns off advising that
the tomographic function has been abandoned.
During the exit from tomography, i.e. when led 19 flashes with
fast frequency, if key 19 is pushed, the led starts flashing with
slow frequency indicating that the booking to the exit from
tomography has been abandoned in favour of the entrance. The
action of joystick 45 will therefore cause a new entrance into the
tomographic function.

Non-working conditions
None.

Description
If the equipment is equipped with a I.I. larger than 12 the
tomographic function is not allowed with tilting lower than 0
(towards Trendelenburg).
By acting on joystick 45 or key 51 (Figure 6), over the horizontal
position towards Trendelenburg of the table, the movement is
stopped and display 4 starts flashing advising the operator that the
tomography is not available.
When the tomographic function or the sub-program Sighting are
active the following movements are not available from joystick:
Hunting
FFL
Compressor.

6.7.2 Layer height adjustment

Function
Layer height adjustment and automatic increase.

Application
The layer height adjustment (28 and 29) allows to modify the
position of the virtual cut inside the organ to be tested. The value of
the layer height is shown on display 4 with an accuracy of 2mm.
The function of automatic increase (27) allows to automatically
increase the height of the cut level of a quantity which depends on
the set tomography angle.

Working conditions
The layer height adjustment is designed with 2 speeds automatically
selected according to the following conditions:
slow speed 1 mm/sec for 2 seconds.
Keeping the control pushed is automatically set:
high speed 10 mm/sec.
When the control is released at the following activation the slow
speed will be selected.
By pushing key 27 the relevant led is lit advising the operator that
the automatic increase function of the layer height is active.
This function generates the increase of the stratigraphy fulcrum at
the end of every tomography, of a quantity depending on the
tomography angle selected according to this table:

Angle mm increase
7 30
20 20
30 10
45 5

This increase is possible until the achievement of the max. layer

corresponding to 240 mm.

Function
Selection of tomography angles and speeds.

Application
These selections allow to adapt Tomography to the organ to be
tested. The speed selection (21 or 22) allows to modify the time with
equal angle, therefore modifying the X-ray quantity sent to the
patient. The angle selection (23, 24, 25 or 26) allows to obtain
different cutting thickness.

Working conditions
At the entrance into the tomographic function the slow speed (21)
and the 45 angle (26) are selected by default. It will be possible to
modify these selections and adapt them to the test requirements.
The operator is advised of the set selection when the relevant leds
are lit.
In no case both speeds or more than one angle can be selected at the
same time.
In the tomographic function one speed and one angle will always be
selected.

Function
Standard radiographies alternated with tomographies.

Application
Execution of exposures with standard projections to be alternated
with tomographic tests keeping the tomographic selections unvaried,
thus accelerating the passage times from one function to the other.

Working conditions
The function Sighting can be selected when the tomographic
program is active.
By pushing key 20 the relevant led is lit advising the operator that
the function is active.
Display 4, the leds of the set speed and angle and the layer
automatic increase led , if any, are off thus blocking the selection.
By pushing key 20 again the function is reset, the relevant led is off
and the tomographic selection previously blocked are proposed
again.

Non-working conditions
Equipment not in tomographic function
Seriograph-tube carriage not within the limits
Column not at 0.

Description

The same is valid also for the opposite side.
If the tomographic or sighting function are active, the movement
range is limited according to the set angle and layer height as
described in paragraph 6.7.1.
If the equipment is equipped with a I.I. larger than 12" the movement
is limited in the direction toward head when tilting is in a position
lower than 0. This limitation remains valid until tilting has a value
equal to or exceeding 85.
By acting on the tilting control, if the carriage is out of the allowed
range, the return within the allowed range will be automatically
activated.

Non-working condition
The movement is not allowed when:
the compressor is in the compression zone
the equipment is switched on in the alarm condition 085 (layer
not at film level and column not 0).

Description
If the position of the longitudinal patient-carrying table is such to
require the return to the central position during tilting, this
movement will automatically be activated along with the movement
of the seriograph carriage in order to keep the X-ray beam centered
on the patient.
The carriage movement will follow, whenever necessary, the
movement of the patient-carrying table until reaching the limit
switch where it will be automatically stopped.

patient-carrying table will move toward the external side of the table.
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switch.

MERCURY 332 56 (Rev. 3)

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

Non-working condition
The movements are not allowed when the compressor is not in the
park position.

Description
If the position of the longitudinal patient-carrying table is such to
require the return towards the central position during tilting, this
movement will be automatically activated along with the movement
of the seriograph carriage in order to keep the X-ray beam centered
on the patient.
When the table reaches the vertical or Trendelenburg position, the
patient carrying table reaches longitudinally the position aligned
with the table side beam.

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

6.8.7 Compressor

Function
Compressor.

Application
The compression device is irreplaceable in the execution of the
digestive system tests.

Working condition
The compressor positioning takes place by means of two different
movements:
in/out movement of the compression cone with respect to the
X-ray beam
up/down movement of the compression cone with respect to the
patient-carrying table.
By moving joystick 48 downward, the compressor cone will be
aligned with the X-ray beam and then will carry out the downstroke
toward the patient.
By moving it upward, the compressor up-movement and then the
exit from the X-ray field will be obtained.

The device is designed to apply three different compressive forces:

with led of key 39 lit, a force equal to 6 kg will be applied
with led of key 40 lit, a force equal to 10 kg will be applied
with led of key 41 lit, a force equal to 14 kg will be applied.
When the cone gets in contact with the patient, the compressive
movement is automatically stopped according to the selected force.

MERCURY 332 58 (Rev. 3)

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

To modify the selection of the compressive force , push the selected

key. The relevant led is lit signalling the setting completion.
The following conditions are not possible:
no active led
more than one active led.

When the compressor is in a position other than the park position

the following conditions may occur:
Activation of hunting movement:
The compressor is automatically driven to the park position.
By releasing the hunting movement joystick the compressor
stops. Hunting will be activated only when the compressor has
reached the park position. This safety avoids any collision risk
between the cone and the patient.
Activation of movements of the patient-carrying table or of
the seriograph carriage:
Only if the compressor is in the compressive movement zone
(up/down):
the required movement is not activated
the compressor is raised with the following timings:
with the minimum compression force (6 kg)
raising motor activation time = 1sec
with the medium compression force (10 kg)
raising motor activation time = 1,5 sec
with the maximum compression force (14 kg)
raising motor activation time = 2 sec.
At the end of the timings above listed, the raising movement
is stopped and the control console emits an acustic signal.
Release and activate again the joystick to activate the
requested movement.
Of course, the raising movement of the compressor is a dead
man command. Therefore, if during the movement the
joystick is released, the movement stops.
Pressing again the joystick the raising movement re-starts
and will last for the total time above indicated, determined by
the compression force selected, without taking into
consideration the partial travel already carried out.
The 4 movements of the table top and the 2 movements of
the carriage will be free only after the complete raising time
for the selected compression force is elapsed.
This allows to carry out the patient movement with respect to the
X-ray beam, or vice versa, with no risk for the patient. Once the
required movement has been carried out, it will be possible to
activate compression again.

(Rev. 3) 59 MERCURY 332

USER'S MANUAL
Operating instruction

Non-working condition
The compressor movement is not allowed when the tomographic
function is active. The entrance into this function causes the
movement of the compressor towards the park position.

Description
The compression cone can be removed from the compressor device
by pulling the blocking knob B (Figure 5) and extracting it as
indicated by arrow b (Figure 5).

WARNING:
, In case the machine should stop working when the compressor cone is
in touch with the patient, the compressor cone itself can be removed by
unscrewing the emergency stop A (Figure 5). In this way, the cone can be
raised as shown by arrow a (Figure 5) thus freeing the patient.

USER'S MANUAL
Diagnosis

7 DIAGNOSIS
The Mercury 332 software is designed to diagnose some anomalous or
dangerous situations which may occur to the equipment.
When one or more of these diagnosis situations take place, the table
movements are stopped and the controls to accessories blocked. Panel
displays 1 and 2 show the flashing number referred to the alarm
accompanied by an acoustic signal.
The alarms are subdivided into three groups:

Collisions
By activating one or more movement controls it is possible to reach
the collision safety limit set by the technician during the installation
phase; the collision safety limit creates a software imaginary barrier
which cannot be overcome from any side of the equipment.
In this case, on displays 1 and 2 the blinking message COLLIS
appears. On display 3 instead a two digit number indicates which
part of the equipment has reached the collision position and which
part of the room is involved. The first digit indicates the part of the
equipment that has reached the collision position, while the second
digit indicates the obstacle as described in the following table.
To alert the operator that some of the movements may be disabled,
the blinking message COLLIS is displayed until a joystick is
depressed.
After pressing and releasing the joystick, the display returns to its
normal condition.
Pressing again a command, the COLLIS message re-appears until the
collision position is cleared.

1st digit = organ 2nd digit = obstacle

1 Pat. carrying table-head side 1 Left wall
2 Patient carrying table - feet 2 Right wall
side
3 Headphone 3 Ceiling
4 Column 4 Floor
5 Seriograph carriage

When the collision-proof software barrier is reached the movement is

blocked; only the movements taking away the equipment from the
dangerous position can be activated.
During the collision situation, the Scopy, Preparation and Graphy
functions are however allowed.

(Rev. 3) 79 MERCURY 332

USER'S MANUAL
Diagnosis

Operating alarms
The alarms of this group are generated by operating errors due to
incorrect manoeuvres of the operator or to malfunctions of external
accessories.
As these alarms do not generate any dangerous or risky situation for
the patient, the operator and the equipment itself, they can be reset
without switching off the installation.
By moving joystick 43 downward twice, the first movement stops the
acoustic signal, the second one resets the alarm.

Alarm caused by failures or malfunctions

The alarms of this group are generated by failures to components of
the equipment. As these situations might generate dangerous or
risky situations for the patient, the operator or the equipment itself,
the alarms of this group cannot be reset.
It will be necessary to switch off the equipment and call the
technician to remove the failure causes.

USER'S MANUAL
Diagnosis

7.1 Collision messages

7.1.1 COLLIS 03

This message appears when an equipment (for example a pendant)

installed in the room is not in park position.
The equipment movements, except for the four movements of the
patient-carrying table are not allowed.
When a pendant, if any, is taken to park position again, the message is
automatically reset.

7.1.2 COLLIS from 011 to 052

These messages will be automatically removed if the condition which has

generated the alarm disappears (see previous paragraph).

7.2 Alarms

All the alarms listed here below are visualised as Err flashing on display
1 followed by a flashing code on display 2.
It may occur that when the equipment is switched on the following alarm
appears:
Err 085
This alarm is generated when the equipment is switched off with
tomographic function active.
If the column is at 0 the layer is automatically restored to film level;
once this position has been reached the alarm 085 is reset.
If the column is not at 0, joystick 43 shall be moved upward to restore
its vertical position.
Now the layer is automatically restored to film level; once this position
has been reached, the alarm 085 is reset.
When the alarm 085 appears, the seriograph carriage and hunting
movements are not allowed. Only the column centering will be allowed.
