Almost Home
Almost Home is transitional housing located at 3200 St. Vincent Avenue St. Louis, MO. Their number is (314) 771-4663. This is a facility that helps young
moms from the ages of 16-20 without a high school diploma or GED, 18-28 with a high school diploma or GED, and for moms that have completed the
program and are wanting to continue and maintain what they had learned.
The have three main programs that do different things for the moms. The first is Foundations to Success. This program is for 16 to 20-year-old pregnant or
parenting women that dont have a high school diploma or GED and need housing. This program will help these women earn a high school diploma or GED,
ensure the safety for the children, create a stable living situation, learn critical habits and life skills, define life goal and a vision for the future, the women can
also qualify for the creating employment opportunities program, safe transitional housing for moms and their children, assistance with food clothing, baby
supplies, and childcare, case management and counseling, tutoring and academic support, and life skills classes.
The second program is Creating Employment Opportunities. This program is for moms that are 18 to 28-years-old that have a high school diploma or
GED. With this program the women will obtain a living-wage job with the opportunity to advance, learn how to manage money, gain skills to provide for their
family long-term, participate in an one year training program, gain job training and placement, get career-relevant education, get life-skills coaching, achieve
personal and professional development, and get access to a dedicated social services support team.
The last program is the Alumni Support Program. This program is for the moms that completed the other programs and are looking to maintain the goals
and support to long-term independence. This program will provide the moms with long-term self-sufficiency, a connection with support systems, opportunity to
give back and inspire others, they provide up to eight years of support, have access to low-rent housing, provided with daycare assistance/stipends, get home
visits and follow-ups, be provided with coaching, support groups and therapy, and get peer mentoring opportunities.
The Almost Home programs has proven to work with 1,500 plus mom since 1993 and 50 plus babies/toddlers each year to get a fresh start. With these
programs, 57% of moms pursue education beyond high school and/or further job training, 95% maintain stable housing after leaving Almost Home, and 90%
obtain jobs to provide for their families.
There is one main gathering area in the facility that is used for a eating area, teaching area, and group activities like holidays and activities with the
children. They rent out a local space for larger events for the mothers, their children, and other invited family members.
The women that come to Almost home are usually young moms or young women that are currently program and do not have a place to live or are not a
stable housing situation. Some of these moms also need help with feeding and clothing their children. They also may need help in achieving education or a job
that is better than minimum wage and can help the provide for their family.
Each mom is provided with a room with a bed for her and bed(s) for her child(ren) while staying at the facility. After the moms complete the first two
programs, Almost Home has the third program that continues to help the moms in finding a career. This will help them provide for their family. They also own an
apartment building that is a low-income rent apartment.
They also have a variety of partners that support them with the long-term success of the moms. The partners include Deaconess Foundation, Franciscan
Sisters of Mary, United Way of Greater St. Louis, St. Louis County Childrens Service Fund, and Affordable Housing Commission.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
The transitional house located in San Francisco, California is a Queen Anne style
home. The Queen Anne style will be continued in the home with a mix of neutral and
rich colors. Floral and oriental patterns will be used to continue with the Queen Anne
style. All flooring, furniture, and other materials will be strong and be able to
withstand a lot of traffic and wear and tear from children. With the use of warm
colors, the home will be inviting and comfortable to the residents and visitors. The
apartments will be private and separate from the public areas to keep the women
and children safe. There will also be rooms that are ADA compliant to give those with
disabilities room to be comfortable to live or visit the home.

CUSTOM COLOR SCHEMES
The orange color was turned into a yellow to better go
with the Queen Anne style. The red wad darken into a
maroon. The green was brighten to give more of a grey
color instead of grey. The black purple color was
changed in taking out the purple and lighten to give a
soft black color. The tan was darkened into a brown to
better fit with the other colors.
The green was darkened to achieve a better olive color.

The blue was brighten to give a pop of color. The lighter
green color was changed to a yellow to brighten the
palette more. The brown was darken to give another
darker color. The cream was lighten and changed to get
rid of the pink hue.

4. Bathtub
607.2 Clearance. Clearance in front of bathtubs shall extend the length of the bathtub and shall be 30 inches (760 mm) wide minimum. A lavatory
complying with 606 shall be permitted at the control end of the clearance. Where a permanent seat is provided at the head end of the bathtub, the
clearance shall extend 12 inches (305 mm) minimum beyond the wall at the head end of the bathtub.
5. Door
404.2.3 Clear Width. Door openings shall provide a clear width of 32 inches (815 mm) minimum. Clear openings of doorways with swinging doors shall be
measured between the face of the door and the stop, with the door open 90 degrees. Openings more than 24 inches (610 mm) deep shall provide a clear
opening of 36 inches (915 mm) minimum. There shall be no projections into the required clear opening width lower than 34 inches (865 mm) above the finish
floor or ground. Projections into the clear opening width between 34 inches (865 mm) and 80 inches (2030 mm) above the finish floor or ground shall not

JUSTIFICATION
The transitional home was designed to be a safe place for women and children to stay.
The home features a double entry where the director can see who is coming in and going. This also
adds extra security so not just anyone can walk in. There are three apartments to give the women and
their children extra privacy. A playroom for the children to gather was added. This will give the
children social skills and the ability to be with other kids their age in a safe environment. The home
also has a classroom which through research has been found to be very useful for the women.
The home has ADA attributes. There is a two bedroom apartment and a one bedroom
apartment that is ADA compliant.
The Queen Anne style is prominent throughout the home with the arches and stained
glass windows and lighting. Wood ceilings, wainscoting, and floors can be seen throughout the
gathering space which was often seen in these homes.
REFLECTION
I have learned more about the Queen Anne style and how to develop the style in
a home today. This also taught me how to research a home and learn how to
apply it to every aspect of the construction of the interior and the materials
chosen.
I learned to keep track of a timesheet and learn that this is how designers bill the
clients for their hard work. This also helps with keeping track of all that you have
done for the client and what you still need to do.
I learned to make a cost estimation table. This taught me to keep all the items and
materials organized and help the clients see what everything cost and what they
are spending their money on.
