SPEED Release Notes Installer 2

Installer
Bug Fixes
The SPEED support link was showing an email address instead of the support web site URL (http://
www.speed-emachine-design.com/support-faq). SPEEDPROD-41
If file associations were set up for multiple SPEED versions it was impossible to tell which version
was which. The version number for each new installation now appears in the menu when using the
Open with menu when right-clicking on a SPEED data file. SPEED-1146

ALL PROGRAMS
Bug Fixes
When moving to using the SD2 steel format internally, the facility to view SD1 was dropped from
the Materials dialog. This function has been restored. SPEEDPROD-32
When running a Python script using the speedwrapper class, sometimes the SPEED program was left
open after running a script. An explicit call to quit the SPEED program is now made before exiting.
SPEEDPROD-27
When using a dxf overlay in the Outline editor, with changes made to the scaling dimension (for
example, Rad3 in PCBDC), the display would not rescale the DXF until after the image was reset.
The correct scaling is now applied automatically. SPEEDPROD-31

Improvements
Internal code improvements. SPEED-1206, SPEED-1162
In earlier versions, selecting STAR-CCM+ from the SPEED GoFER dialog required the full path of
the .exe file to be specified. Only the version-specific folder is now required. SPEED-1224

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes ALL PROGRAMS 3

The OpenGL display in most programs did not respect the user's choice of color and some axial
lengths were set to a default value leading to incorrect displays. When editing parameters, in
OpenGL mode, the display could crash due to incorrect values. The usual error message is now
displayed when this is detected. SPEED-1193, SPEEDPROD-21

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 4

In previous versions a .dials file would be automatically created even when no dials were being used.
Now, if there are no dials, an empty .dials file is not written. If such a file already exists, it is deleted.
SPEED-1241
When first run, the Import previous settings dialog now displays settings to copy even if they
already exist in the new installation. In addition, instructions for changing the version to import from
are given in the dialog. SPEED-1230

Scripting
STAR-CCM+ GoFER scripts have been updated to comply with the latest improvements to the
scripting model. SPEEDPROD-36

PC-BDC
Bug Fixes
Fixed Previously in v11.02
Nmbp was missing from the Outline Editor. SPEEDPROD-18
An error was introduced resulting in incorrect calculation with RotType = IPM, Embed = embed3
and Rmi > 0. This has been fixed. SPEEDPROD-37
The airgap B harmonics were not calculated when EMFCalc = HBmethod or KFR, leading to a
division by zero. This error has been corrected. SPEED-1171
Some experimental code related to FLEXlm license handling during scripting was accidently left in
the code and could cause license errors which would require a program restart. This has been fixed.
SPEED-1165
Fixed in Current Release
With LamShape = Annulus and LamAlign = Tooth, export via GDF would lead to a meshing error
in PC-FEA. This has been corrected. SPEEDPROD-15
When only one of MOH1 or MOH2 is non-zero an error could occur in the calculation. A
workaround was to change the zero to a very small value such as 1e-6 as this would avoid the error
but not influence the results. This workaround is no longer necessary. SPEEDPROD-8
With S_Slot = GH and an outer rotor machine, the arc defined by the parameter fil_D was drawn
with the wrong curvature. This has been fixed. SPEEDPROD-17

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 5

The magnet relative permeability passed via the GDF file did not include allowance for Shim and
Bracing effects. MuRecEff is now passed depending on the Br setting in the GoFER. SPEED-1148
A division by zero could occur when calculating the d-axis sub-transient reaction with external rotors
and pc_Mag=0. In this case the calculation is now omitted. SPEED-441
An error in the calculation of end-turn length affecting MLT when CalcVer=cv12 and Ext<>0 has
been fixed. SPEED-1267
An error in the calculation of Wt_Mag for RotType=IPM and Embed=embed3 when Rmc<>0 has
been fixed. SPEED-1282
When Connex=Delta and Drive=Square the wrong rotor position was being used in the i-psi
GoFER. This has been corrected. SPEED-1300.
When EMFCalc=KFR and MagType<>Radial both the embedded solver and the GDF editor were
using the wrong magnetisation pattern. Both instances have been fixed. SPEED-1312.

Improvements
An interface for creating HEEDS MDO studies for optimisation projects has been added. This
feature requires a full installation of HEEDS, the path to which is specified in the interface as shown
below. The location of a working Python installation is also required. The design of this feature
closely follows that described in the SPEED-2-HEEDS tutorial (available via SPUD), and consists of
a Python script that is updated under the control of HEEDS to perform an optimisation. All the
functionality of this tutorial can be created using the new dialog. SPEED-960
A HEEDS study operates on the current data file and allows the user to specify multiple parameters
to vary, their limits, and the resolution (a measure of the discretisation). The available study
processes are:
Simple the HEEDS study varies the parameters and applies the specified constraints and
objectives.
User script the specified Python file is used for the analysis. It is assumed that this file contains
the parameters used to create the HEEDS study so the best way to use this feature is to create the
files automatically then switch to User script and edit the previously created file.

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 6

Minimise cogging torque can be used to duplicate the SPEED-2-HEEDS tutorial analysis
section. Internally this adds a call to run the PCFEA cogging torque GoFER and the associated
cogpk parameter for optimisation.
Also on the Input parameters tabbed page are additional options:
Create thumbnail this creates a small image of the machine being designed and adds it to the
HEEDS study for automatic display in the post-processor.
Validate geometry this adds a call to check the geometry before running an analysis. The
design is marked as unfeasible if the geometry is not valid.
Run Dynamic design this uses PCBDCs full time-stepping analysis as opposed to the default
static design.
If the selected Input parameter is an enumerated type, a list of available values is shown which can
be selected or deselected as required. For other parameters the Minimum and Maximum values can
be specified or if Values is checked a list of values can be entered. Existing entries in the list can be
edited by selecting them, changing values, and then clicking the Replace button. If the specified
parameter is not in the list this button will be titled, Add. Entries can be deleted by selecting and then
clicking the Remove button.

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 7

On the Constraints and Objectives tabbed page constraints can be applied to parameters. This can
be a simple greater- or less-than condition or both can be specified to create a required range. The
type of constraint is specified using the Condition combo-boxes and relevant values can be entered
alongside.

There are two types of Objective, Minimise and Maximise. These can be specified by selecting a
parameter and choosing the appropriate check-box. If Minimise cogging torque has been selected
the internal cogpk parameter will not be shown here but will be added automatically to the HEEDS
file.
As with Input parameter, entries can be deleted by selecting them and then clicking Remove.
Once all the information has been added here, a Project name must be chosen. This will be the name
of the study in HEEDS and also the name of the file to save the set-up information. To save the file
use the HEEDS|Save project file menu item. Similarly an existing set-up file can be loaded using
HEEDS|Load project file. HEEDS|New project can be used to clear the existing set-up and start
with a blank study.
Also on the HEEDS menu are Create files and Show files. These are used primarily for user interest
or if User script is going to be used. Create files writes the Python files used to setup the HEEDS

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 8

study and the analysis script. Show files displays these two files in a syntax highlighted viewer
dialog.
HEEDS|HEEDS mode has two values which control what happens when the Run HEEDS button is
clicked. The first, Create files only, is the default, and starts HEEDS MDO with the files created.
Changes can then be made inside the HEEDS interface and the study run in the usual way. The
second option, Run study, creates the HEEDS files and then automatically runs the study. There is
no indication of the progress of the study until the study completes. If the second option has been
used, the HEEDS Post button can be used to start the HEEDS post-processor for analysing results;
otherwise the normal HEEDS interface can be used after the study has completed.
A script editor for Python has been added. The path to the Python DLL must be selected before
running a script as shown in the dialog below. SPEED-1134

Due to bugs in some Python versions it is advised to ensure that Python is installed correctly before
running the script editor. A common problem with some versions of WinPython (e.g. 3.4.3.4 and
3.4.4.2) is the need to run a post-install script from the command line to ensure the ActiveX portions
of Python are initialised.

cd C:\winPython-32bit-3.4.4.2\python-3.4.4\

python Scripts\pywin32_postinstall.py install

WFeCalc can now be set to User for static design. Previously static design forced WFeCalc=OC
which for synchrel machines resulted in zero iron losses. By using WFeCalc = User and ipWFe to a
measured or FE-calculated value, efficiency and performance can be calculated more accurately.
SPEED-1168 (Released in v11.02)
The unused parameter NPOffs was removed. SPEED-1189
Internal code related to HTML help file support has been removed. SPEED-1192

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 9

With S_Slot = GH and an outer rotor machine, the holes in the stator tooth tips defined by HR5 and
PCR5 were not supported. These are now allowed. SPEEDPROD-16

With RotType = IPM and Embed = embed7, the B1 (wing) magnets could be placed incorrectly,
leading to drawing and mesh failures which can be difficult to diagnose. An error is now raised when
the centre of these magnets (defined by x_MC and y_MC) lies outside the area defined by the
A,D,G,F co-ordinates in the diagram shown below. SPEEDPROD-38

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 10

For machines with LamShape = Annulus, as the only possible solution domain is WholeMotor, the
different options shown in the GoFER options page 1 are invalid. These have been
removed. SPEEDPROD-22
The NumPoly parameter is now renamed Plex for all use cases. SPEEDPROD-42
When the GoFERs are set to use STAR-CCM+, eccentricity parameters (EccMode, Ecc, EccY,
EccX, EccThX and EccThY which are now in TED) are automatically passed via the xGDF file and
the solution domain set to WholeMotor. SPEEDPROD-40
After running the sliced skew GoFER a .sktrq file is produced which contains the torque vs. rotor
position for each slice of the modeled machine. A dialog has been added (accessed via the Tools|FE
results|Reconstruct .sktrq menu) to display the torque from each slice and the resulting total torque.
SPEED-1219

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-BDC 11

The PCBDC parameter WSLL was not calculated but still appeared in the design sheet. It has been
removed to avoid confusion. SPEED-1159
The axial parameters ROH, MOH, MOH1 and MOH2 are now present in the geometry definition
passed via the xGDF file to STAR-CCM+. As well as more faithfully reproducing the geometry for
thermal modeling, this also allows the new 3D FE solver in STAR-CCM+ to model end effects for
calibrating PCBDC. SPEED-1149

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-IMD 12

The OpenGL display of wound-field machines now shows the end-rings. SPEEDPROD-21

PC-IMD
Bug Fixes
In the Create File New window for Type0 a wrong slot type is shown in the graphic area.
SPEED-1167
Rotor vent-holes did not rotate with the rotor in the Outline editor. SPEED-1246

Improvements
An interface for creating HEEDS MDO studies for optimisation projects has been added. This
feature requires a full installation of HEEDS, the path to which is specified in the interface as shown
below. The location of a working Python installation is also required. The design of this feature

The winding factors kp1 and kd1 were not calculated. These are now calculated in the same manner
as PCBDC except for Custom windings. For these, in PCBDC kp1 = kd1 = 1, but in PCIMD kp1
= kw1 and kd1 = 1. This keeps the equation kw1 = ks1*kd1*kp1 valid for all cases in PCIMD.

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-WFC 14

Improvements
If either RotorFill or StatorFill is true, the WriteThumbnail() ActiveX scripting function will
produce a filled outline image file. SPEEDPROD-12

PC-WFC
Bug Fixes
The temperature that Br_T was calculated for transfer via GDF was using IT_B rather than IT_M. It
now uses IT_M when the design sheet value is not available, or the design sheet value of Br_T
directly if it is available. SPEEDPROD-20

Improvements
A cogging torque GoFER has been added for machines with PM excitation. This GoFER rotates the
rotor through one rotor slot pitch and calculates the torque using Maxwell stress, co-energy, MSI and
VW methods. For more information see the PCBDC and PCDCM GoFER manuals. A facility to
calculate the effect of skew on cogging torque has been added. This is accessed through the Tools|FE
results|Skew cogging menu item. SPEED-1152

Checks that BWidth < DComm and TComm <DComm/2 have been added. The drawing of the
commutator has also been fixed when Mica = 0. SPEEDPROD-14

Version 11.04
SPEED Release Notes PC-DCM 15

The commutator and brushes are now added to the GDF file for export to STAR-CCM+.
SPEED-1193

PC-DCM
Bug Fixes
The commutator fill option was ignored in the Outline editor. This has been fixed and the drawing
now matches PCWFC. SPEEDPROD-10

Improvements
A facility to calculate the effect of skew on cogging torque has been added. This is accessed through
the Tools|FE results|Skew cogging menu item. SPEED-1160
Checks that BWidth < DComm and DComm > BComm have been added. SPEEDPROD-14
The commutator and brushes are now added to the GDF file for export to STAR-CCM+. An
additional benefit of this is that the OpenGL display now includes these components. SPEED-1193

PC-AXM
Bug Fixes
Fixed Previously in v11.02
Nstack implementation was incorrect for some inductance components due to Tph being scaled too
early in the calculations. SPEED-1169
PPaths was not being taken into account when calculating the back EMF values (ELpk, EWpk, Eq1
etc.). SPEED-1163
Fixed in Current Release
The default model of Stator = Gramme had an incorrect calculation for Bypk and Bsy. This was
caused by neglecting TC and has been fixed. SPEED-1147
The inductances for Stator Rhombic were incorrectly calculated leading to numerical overflow.
This has been fixed. SPEEDPROD-3
