FIELD SCHOOL ACTIVITY PLAN

Subject Area: STEM Grade Level: 1st and 5th

Purpose of Activity: To encourage teamwork and cooperation between first

and fifth graders in order to complete a feat of engineering.

Materials Needed: Uncooked spaghetti noodles, Gums drops, Reflection

Sheet

Description of Activity:

We will split the students into approximately 9 groups with six students. Each
group will receive uncooked spaghetti noodles and gumdrops. We will
instruct the students to build a structure using only the materials that they
have been given. We will tell them that the objective is to build the tallest
structure that can stand on its own.

We will give the students 7 minutes to build the structure. Once the time
runs out, the students must stop building and step away from the structure.
The tallest tower that stands the longest will be declared the winner.

We will then pass out a reflection sheet to each group. Together, they will fill
this out. The sheet will ask them what strategies work and what didnt. They
will also need to draw a picture of the structure.

We will collect the sheets and talk about the results as a class.
