Lesson Plan: Math Centers

Subject: Math Cluster/Unit: Fractions Grade:

Time Frame: 60 Minutes
SLO: 3.N.13 Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by explaining that a
fraction represents a portion or part of a whole.
Achievement Indicator: Identifying the numerator and denominator for a fraction.

Adaptations: Individualized grouping based on understanding.

Activating: Time Frame:


Explain to students that we will be using centers to 10 minutes
practice some fraction work we had been working on.
We want to focus on practicing our skills during this.
Asking the class to tell what fraction the visual put on
the board means as a refresher.
Explain each station.
Acquiring: Time Frame:
Guided Math as one of the stations, a group of Ten minutes
students will be working with the teacher and work on in a rotation
either practicing fractions representation, writing
fractions, or making pictures of equivalent fractions.
Corrections of previous workbook pages and looking for
anything that students may have questions about.
Applying: Time Frame:
Practice 30 in total.
o Fraction Avenue Ten minutes
Explain that this is not rushed. When you at each.
rush you make mistakes. Take your time,
color nicely, read the instructions carefully
and ask if youre not sure.
o Naming and Writing Fractions
Read the instructions carefully. Go over
how to describe a picture using a fraction.
Go over expanding parts (stretch your
thinking)
o Fraction Review
Probably homework. Go over how to read
word questions carefully. Go over that
portioning means just breaking into pieces.
Fraction Pictionary
o Go over how to play Pictionary. Read the Rule
page. Explain two teams playing back and forth
on the white board. Explain how to keep score
and what an example picture would look like.
Fraction Bingo
o Play carefully. Caller it is your job to use the
proper vocabulary. Before you place your counter
call out I have (proper fraction words).
Assessing:
Assessment for learning, during Guided Math the teacher is looking for where holes
in student understanding are.
Grouping:
Four Groups of 5 students.
Materials Needed:
Fraction boards
White Boards for Pictionary
Pictionary Deck, cut and laminated
Fraction bingo
Fraction booklets
Coloring pencils.
